Majority of things in this thread were mid at best, nostalgia definitely making them seem better than they were.

Only thing that came to mind for me is Surge, but I know it wasn't all that special. Didn't it have super high caffeine or sugar (or both)?

The Mandarin was a great place for taking out a college date in Ames back in the day. Great food. I remember Little Taipei as well and went there quite a bit.
What was the name of that Chinese restaurant upstairs of what was Tazzles back in those days?
Little Taipei, which would be at the top pf my list. It moved at least a couple of times but lasted about forty years and then closed last October. I loved that you could buy a book of ten meal tickets for $28 in the mid-90s.

Home Team Pizza's "slam and a slice" deal for a buck and a quarter was my other go-to, especially before they remodeled and quit allowing Sharpie graffiti.

I know the restaurants still exist, they've just all closed within a 10 hour drive of me, but I miss the Taco Time Crisp Meat Burrito. Those were delicious.
I was just in Salt Lake City and was floored when I drove past one. Noted for next time.

If memory serves correctly, there was an ice cream shop at the base of Welch Ave circa 1984...was it called Marble Slab Creamery? Good stuff.

Also, there was in the basement of Peoples Drug a joint that had really tasty burgers.

It also used to develop a significant amount of whiteish sediment, if it was left to sit for even a short amount of time. I remember working in a little grocery store, back then, and one of my jobs every night was to go agitate the Surge bottles in the cold case. Seeing that crud in at the bottom of every bottle was enough motivation for me to pick something else.

There was this gas station in State Center that made the best bread sticks. I still dream about them. I think it was Sissy's II.

I am a 99.9% of the time a black coffee guy too but liked those individual envelop packs of those International Coffees as as a just in from outside and below zero treat if I had been out shoveling or something.

Barrel of Fun chips used to make a Bloody Mary flavored chip that was absolutely terrific.

Hardee's had fried chicken for a while and it was great fried chicken.

Tostitos Hint of Jalapeno chips.

DaVinci's pizza and subs were really good.

They were basically sugared cocoa with a bit of coffee added, but yeah - they were good.

They did make for a nice warm drink and were a little less sweet than hot chocolate.
