To understand the Gophers fan base you have to realize they think Minnesota should be a destination. Big 10, huge university, big city, great HS talent locally, etc. they can’t understand why it’s not more of a destination for coaches and players than other midwestern locations like Madison, Iowa City, Ames,

Well theyre right. It SHOULD be superior ISU, Iowa, Nubs, et al. They need to look in the mirror and wonder why they are failing despite EVERY ADVANTAGE.

The answer is bad leadership. AD making bad hires over and over. If they hired a great coach and stuck with him, they could be a power. They had good support back in the 90s iirc.

I wonder if theyd have more engaged fans and a better identity if they WERENT in Msp, but were in Mankato or Rochester or somewhere a bit smaller, to make the campus experience a little more connected? The best college towns are usually near, but not in, big cities.

Last thought: its ideal for ISU that Minny and Bucky suck ass. Lots of talent in both states, and you want TJ to have the "we win and our fans care" card in his pocket when he is going to get that talent.

I wonder if we see more re-negotiated deals like Mike Gundy at OSU?

Tang gets to stay at a lower compensation because the school can't afford to fire him. Hoiberg was in a similar situation a few years ago.

Some of these coaches have just fleeced their schools for so much $$$ for so little in wins/performance (Hoiberg, Tang, McCaffery, and next could be Calipari).

What's that phrase? Don't hate the player hate the game?

Not exactly sure.

Who was their assistant AD like 5 years ago?

I think the campus location works against the Gophers. It’s not much of a college experience, in my opinion. And as far as cities go you’re not talking about Miami, LA, etc that may be more desirable.

The apathy is twofold. One is that the teams are not great. The other is that you’ve got Vikings, Wild, Twins, Wolves to compete with.

Even accounting for massive ego, narcissism, and irrational self-confidence, I can’t see Tang giving up money unless the school has a case to fire him with cause. And if KSU has that case, I can’t imagine they wouldn’t just fire him.

If I was in his spot I wouldn’t. Build family security because he isn’t seeing that money level again.

What would be Fran's incentive to agree to a lower package? He's got Iowa by the balls. Go ahead and fire me, but you'll need to back up the brinks truck.

I was thinking more about Tang.

Fran should make Iowa pay him every penny - he got rich by just recruiting legacies and lifelong in-state hawkeye fans!

Gary Barta-- the AD that keeps on giving. This guy should have a statue on campus. C'mon, these contracts that he wrote up for Kirk and Fran under the bleachers arepurre gold and something all ADs should follow his lead (some actually have).

I don't follow KSU enough but what do their fans think of Tang? If he was our coach I would be embarrassed with his antics especially last year when he basically accused ISU of spying on their huddles and then the mop incident in KC. Saw the game on TV not long ago where after a win he was in the student section dancing with them so I don't know if maybe some fans love him and others don't?

Most suddenly have bailed on him and now trash him. Still some completely on board that think this year is just an anomaly.

100% this. Minneapolis is a good city but if you grew up in the metro area it isn't a super appealing location. You are still super close to home and Dinkytown is fine but not that fun of an area. I never even looked at it because I didn't want to be 20 minutes from home haha.

This sums up just about everyone I know who grew up here (most went to Iowa State, Iowa, Madison, KU, Dakotas, etc)
