Do you follow which stations have Tier 1 gas vs Tier 2.
I would be surprised if Casey, HyVee and Sams are Tier 1 (BP, Shell …Costco)

Those are ones that pay for the license

Well if it is just Eastern Iowa they could be deciding between filling up the tank for the round trip before leaving home or just getting enough to get to Des Moines if it is cheaper in the metropolis.

Either way it's stupid just fill up when you need it. If a few cents a gallon is going to break you then you probably shouldn't take the trip in the first place.

Gas was $2.21 Sunday. $2.55 today. $0.34 increase. Still a good price in the grand scheme of things, but I was a bit taken aback by the jump.
The KwikStart by me was $2.67 last night. This morning they jumped to $2.99. As I mentioned earlier, they‘ve increased prices by 25-30 cents a gallon overnight numerous times, that’s nothing new.

As I came home tonight, the Casey’s down the street was still $2.67, but I’m sure they’ll be up to $2.99 by tomorrow.

I always find it funny how the spikes in higher gas prices always jump like that over night, but it never goes down 34 cents in one night lol. If it goes down 5 cents the next morning we are jumping for joy.

Yep. Inelastic demand - what are people gonna do, walk? Ride a bike?

The only reason I look at prices is because I regularly see differences of $0.30 between stations in town. But it's usually always the same ones that are cheapest so when I need gas I just go to the nearest cheap station.
What's frustrating is that in the U.S. there is a relative infrequency of cities/ towns where walking, biking and using transit is a more practical option.

I only care when I am boating. Boat gas is expensive so I try to find the lowest price because it actually matters. 50 Gallon tank adds up really quick all summer if there is a 20 cent gas difference.
My econobox holds around 9 gallons don't worry about filling pick up 36 I try to hit cheap gas when filling that Gas Buddy for the win

I notice the price when I'm filling up but if some other station was $.20 cheaper that is less than $3 and not worth the effort of researching it. I don't get why people are so fixated on gas prices and then do stuff like spend $8 for a coffee.
79 cent coffee at KwikStar with rewards this month. :)

I used to have to do that with a car I had with a non-functioning gas gauge. Write down when I filled up, keep track of how much I drove, then be sure to fill up again before I ran out.
I've done that with a vehicle.

Why is it stupid to save a few bucks with the only effort being to ask if the gas there is cheaper? Be different if they were planning their day around it or going out of their way.

That's like having access to an online coupon code but just choosing not to use it. No, it's not going to "break me" by not using it, but why not?

It's funny how this conversation has weird political undertones. I can predict someone's politics just based on whether they say "I NEVER PAY ATTENTION TO GAS PRICES" or whether they absolutely obsess over it with near 100% accuracy.

I think most people pay attention to gas prices, but don't plan their lives around it. If I know I'll save $.20/gallon by waiting until the next town, and I have enough gas to make it there, I'd be stupid to knowingly pay more. By the same token, if you're driving across town to save $.05 a gallon, you're wasting money needlessly.
