With Ashton Jeanty on the doorstep of breaking Barry Sanders record for most rushing yards in a season, I was wondering what others thought about records that may fall, especially career records due to the COVID year.

Personally, I don’t care what the record book says, until someone does what Barry did in the regular season, they aren’t the holder. Jeanty is very good, but he has at least 2 postseason games, and IMO those shouldn’t count toward records, especially with extended playoffs.

I also wasn’t a fan of the basketball player from Detroit Mercy getting mad he didn’t get Pete Maravich’s record after 5 years when Pete did it in 3.

Just wondering what others thought on the subject.

With a couple of good playoff showings, Dillon Gabriel could pass Case Keenums all time career passing yards. Would need to make the national title game, probably.

Records are made to be broken. my thoughts are: is it really a record if there is an asterisk next to it? Records are cool and all, but if they don't include ISU teams/athletes I don't much care. Ask me about back to back 2000 yard rushing seasons or consecutive games with a 3 pointer made and you might get my attention

Maravich also didn’t have the 3 point line or a shot clock. Any scoring record from now on should have an asterisk.

It's easy for Barry Sanders to be gracious. Even if Jeanty gets the yards, Barry and everyone else will know he did so in several more games over his career. No one is ever going to get in a huge argument about it. It's a trivia queston two years from now.

Mark Gastineau and his reaction to the Favre/Strahan season ending sack to set the NFL record is really the only way to do this wrong.

Maravich *averaged* 38 field goal attempts per game in his career. Last year Tyler Thomas from Hofstra lead the NCAA with 19.4 FGA. Antoine Davis (the Detroit Mercy player) averaged 20.8 attempts over 5 years. That scoring record is the nepo-baby of 4 years of an affront to basketball

Another interesting thing with MBB scoring, is distribution of points (and probably pace and style of the game since Maravich period).

In 1969-70, when Maravich averaged 44.5, six additional players averaged more than 30 ppg:

Austin Carr (38.1), Rick Mount (35.4), Dan Issel (33.9), Willie Humes (30.5), Rich Yunkus and Rudy Tomjanovich (30.1 each). Among those, only Humes played at a “non-power” school (Idaho State).

All of the top 10 that season were higher than the 2023-24 ppg (25.8, Eric Dixon, Villanova) … I’m guessing there was a significant # of players outside of top 10 higher than 26.

Hard to compare across eras, and as others mentioned no 3-point line or shot clock, but those days seemed more common for teams having a single go-to scorer, compared to the past 30-ish seasons or so.

If you want, put an asterisk next to Maravich, or Barry Sanders and people can remember that their 2nd place, or 3rd place number was done under arguably more difficult circumstances.

We don't have asterisks because one guy had more shot attempts, or passing attempts, or rushing attempts, which are just as relevant as who played more games.

The games change over time. Rules change, #of games played changes, etc. Let the records be broken.

I understand rules change, but it’s the # of games that I have an issue with, specifically in single season records.

The Pete Maravich record also, which I don’t think anyone will touch especially if people can’t play a 5th year anymore, but Pete literally was not allowed to play 4 years of varsity college basketball. That would have been so far out of reach if they didn’t have that freshman rule.

I’m with you on the attempts argument and games played argument.

But the 3 point line is a rule change that literally allows a player to accumulate more points than they otherwise would.

Most of Maravich’s field goals came from a distance that would be worth 3 points now. If a player scores 50% more points than Maravich in their career, then they don’t need an asterisk

What offenses did Sanders play in, I suspect some sort of option/wishbone set that was popular at the time? It's worth noting to me that Jeanty puts up similar numbers, with almost assuredly worse OL play, in a spread offense not made for heavy rushing.

He played on an I formation team. Gundy was the QB.

Jeanty played against significantly worse teams, if that’s the way you want to look at it.

Pretty sure the #1 undefeated team in the country gave up 200/3 to him, the most they gave up to any single rusher their entire season...and more than the vast majority of whole teams they played. He'd start for any team in the country anywhere.

I’m not saying that he wouldn’t. But if he played in a halfway decent conference against P4 bodies almost every week, he wouldn’t have probably hit 2,000 yards.
