Ok, apparently they released the kids from the gym to return to their classrooms, but the police had the suspect in the office area with big class windows. Kids saw him and the police shooing them and telling them to get back took it as indication evacuate again.

Weapon was a "butter or kitchen knife". Girl definitely got stabbed somewhere in the shoulder. No word on the extent of her injuries. Possible minor injuries to two nearby students as well. Pretty much entire school was picked up by parents in the last 30 mins

So has school been cancelled or still going on as planned?

not that it matters I suppose but when they say butter knife, I assume they aren't referring to the ones with the rounded points and almost no edge.

Not exactly sure.
They plan and they plan for this stuff but when it comes down to it, you need people in charge that can calmly and firmly take action. Unfortunately, not enough are built this way. Ugh. Glad yours is ok and the attacker was apprehended. Unreal.
Most educators don’t like sudden change. They plan every minute of their days out. There is no event like this that is typical. So no matter the amount of planning, it’s unlikely to be smooth anywhere, less likely in a school. Not knocking educators, school needs structure and most are talented in that area, these events are anything but structured.

Update, waiting to pick up my son, apparently the second evacuation was a "miscommunication" by the police or school administration - jfc get your **** together. Student was apprehended already

Looks like roughly 80% of the students are getting picked up by their parents
Be good at educating kids. Makes kids feel good. Make parents feel good. Prevent bullying. Remediate bullies. Provide lunch. Master communication at all times. Get my kid to college. Be great at sports. Manage to every single parents political ideology. Flawlessly execute disaster response. Yeah those ********.

This is per my son's buddies who were a table over. it happened in the school cafeteria area where they have a morning breakfast. they saw a knife but couldnt say if it was a butter knife or a sharpened knife. fwiw the school cafeteria only gives out "sporks" so it was brought in or somehow acquired from the kitchen that morning.

I've (thankfully) only witnessed one life-threatening situation at work about 10 years ago and the two people who remained calm and took charge were military vets. It was a very profound thing to see in comparison to the way others reacted.

got a communication that "injured students (notably plural) were treated at the school and released to their parents"

no word on offically cancelling, but I'm guessing it will effectively be a study hall and emotional support day for anyone left.

Sounds like it could have been much worse.
Hug your kids, parents.

not gonna post the name of the kid although it's pretty known now locally. he transferred in after a previous incident of throwing chairs at his previous school.

he is described as "quiet and withdrawn, but not disliked or unpopular". I guess I don't want to ruin his life in 8th grade, although he's tryin pretty hard on his own

Terrible situation. Prayers that the victims are ok. Way too much violence and hatred in the world. SMH

btw, this is only gonna harden my stance against taking phones away from kids lol. not sure I can get on Keith Murphy's side of that while this crap keeps happening - only up-to-date info parents received was via their kid's phones.

school info was hours late and vague (as I'm sure they are concerned with litigation)

Sigh. It sucks that almost daily, I say a brief prayer (and I'm not overly religious) something like this, "Please, let my students be safe today." Some days or weeks, you can feel the different tension in the building and wonder "is today the day?"

I'm not trying to make any excuses - we don't know anything about this kid. And that's my approach every day. Even though they're in high school now, they're still just kids, trying to figure things out. Much like the rest of us, without the experience or wisdom we've gained from trying to figure things out. All that said, I feel bad for this kid that somewhere, somehow, we've done a disservice. While at the same time, I feel for the students and teachers that are hurting and scared today. And finally, as a parent myself, I can't imagine what they're going through. Sigh.

You are assuming they care or accept the likely mental health issues the child has. Much less accept such issues may be a result of the environment they provide.
Thats the kicker. I hope this kid can find an answer to his misdirected anger before its WAY too late. Hes going to have a much bigger hill to climb now that he made this decision.
