That's something I hope they change, 50 levels isn't really that much with all the different abilities and the unlock reqs for some being so high. I'm just now unlocking a lot of the second level abilities and I'm at level 30.
I did a 2nd dynasty and end up saving a bunch of my points for the one that unlocks with 5 playoff wins and then im going to save for the 2 champ one.

I've just been doing the exhibition games to get a feel for things. And I'm having a lot of trouble. I win most games on freshman like 48-0 and when I go to varsity I'm losing like 59-14 or something like that every time. I throw 6-7 pics a game and my defense can't stop anything (playing against G5 teams as ISU)

Does anyone have any general advice? Because at this point I am completely lost with how to complete passes or play defense. It's so easy on freshman, but on varsity I am just totally unable to do anything.

You just have to get comfortable with your playbook, get familiar with the settings and navigating playbook between plays. I started out that way but am now able to beat decent/good teams on All-American. I'm still throwing many picks and struggling a bit on D, but my offense has gotten way better. I use a lot of crossing routes, seems like it's easy to see when those guys are open in space.

Part of the problem is probably that I've never played a Madden or NCAA game in my life, and I also am pretty bad with Xs and Os stuff. So, its hard for me even to really know what I'm doing wrong. I suppose it will come with practice

I’ve found a few plays that work and basically just run similar looking plays from different formations. I mostly pick plays by player now instead of by formation.

Lol, ok, well I've been playing football video games since the days of Intellivision and am not that far ahead of you so I'd say you're doing ok.

Zone defense, try to match your defense with how many WRs they have. If you’re throwing too many picks just stick with short routes and crossers

Yeah I had the same problem as you, both the picks and defensive woes (albeit mine was moving from varsity to AA). I'm getting to the point of being able to compete in AA now.

If you can figure out some run plays that work that helps a ton. I like the inside zones out of shotgun formation, can still get the jet sweeps to work more often than not, and sprinkle in quick base and draws. I like the HB screens, short crosses, and out routes for passes. If an out or crosser isn't open it's prone for a pick, though, so I like to have at least 2 receivers in mind at the snap and maybe a back out of the backfield for a safe option if possible.

For D, I've been running either cover 3 or cover 4 zones - haven't really figured out best formations yet but they tend to help with passing. Can get gashed occasionally for medium to long runs, can help to pinch the D line and bring a middle backer right up to the line in the middle (typically manually drop him back to his zone at the snap). Bringing that LB up to the line can "trick" the O line into thinking they need to block him, which occasionally leaves a D lineman open to wreak havoc.

Sucky thing on D is no matter what you do, it usually leaves something open and the AI has a knack for finding that, especially if they aren't pressured.

Does anyone have an easy solution for stopping Malik Verdon from getting at least one roughing the punter penalty per game?

I was in the same boat when the game came out on varsity vs AA. I'm to the point now that I win the majority of games on AA except for when I go up against the real powerhouses. What I did:

Lots of running the ball and high percentage passes - out routes, short crossers, RPO bubbles, etc. Pretty much the only deep shots I take are when the corner is pressing the outside receiver and the D is in cover 1 or cover 0. Think K-State style offense moving the ball down the field.

Lots of Tampa 2 and Cover 3 zone on defense. For some reason the corners lose their brains on man half the time. I also user control the strong side linebacker to better cover the short crossing routes and run plays. This took a while to learn but had the most impact on my defensive game by a wide margin one i got it down.

Accepting that the CPU will get theirs. There are times where this game decide the CPU is going to score on a drive and there's nothing you can do to stop it. Just have to weather the storm and play your style of football when you get it back.

adjust the sliders

turn CPU interceptions down to 25/30

turn the defensive back reaction time down to 25/30.

the other thing I noticed is that User Pass Blocking is backwards on the sliders (the lower it is the better they will protect, the higher it is they give up more sacks). I was getting sacked A TON and turned it down to like, 25 and it's much better.
