Yeah, I'm referring to the west 9 as the ones on the west side of the road that cuts through (2-10)
Updated Saylorville forecast to 878'. The heaviest of the forecasted rain from yesterday stayed out of the Des Moines Basin upstream from Saylorville.
At 878' it is 72% of max capacity.
Still need to avoid a significant rain for the next week and a half or so.

Red Rock starting to see the sharp Rise. 759' is 21' off the Spillway. Given the huge carrying capacity that Red Rock has as the level rises, there's really no significant threat for flooding populated areas at this level. It'll only be at 37% capacity after it hits peak so it could also absorb another huge amount of water.

Times like this make me wonder, how much extra capacity would Saylorville have if the north end were dredged? It has to be enormous. Given the increased likelihood of floods in coming generations, it seems like a no-brainer to get that done.
Yeah, everything north of the mile long bridge is reaaally shallow. Like 4-5 ft with a deeper channel along both sides. 2 winters ago the Army Corps lowered the normal lake level like 5-6ft to do some work on the damn. When the channels froze over I was able to walk across them and the entire middle was above water. I walked on exposed lake bed in the center of the lake that extended almost all the way to the bridge. It was pretty cool.

I believe the Corps wants to dredge Saylorville but has run into a funding gap as well as a lack of interested parties on taking all that fill..
It'd be awesome if the could approve piling it into dunes like they do on the Mississippi River..

Does anybody else feel like between the rapid ramp up in weather extremes the past several years, the nasty forecasts for tornadoes and hurricanes this year, the political environment, election year, and state of college athletics - that it's like a small-scale simulation for the end times? Half joking, but seriously is the world a ****** up place nowadays.
I don't know anything about any of this...but that was all good Iowa topsoil at one time, right? Can it not be repurposed for new construction projects? Does being submerged like that degrade its quality?
I see a lot of local building projects importing tons of soil to raise and/or level its elevation, even in places where it doesn't look like it needs to be elevated. I always wonder where that comes from.
The soil can be reused, but it takes time to dry out. We work on several dredging projects and the slurry often gets pumped or trucked into a nearby basin. Over time, a lot of the water drains out of it and it can be usable again. The quality of the dirt can vary and it isn't suitable for all applications.
