Right, but a newspaper (or other legit media outlet) beat reporter isn’t going to report anonymous sources. Thats not how it works. An anonymous tip might be a place where a journalist starts digging, but it’s not going to be reported without confirmation or evidence from other sources.
“Unnamed sources” is totally different than anonymous. 1) It has to be someone who would be in a position to know from firsthand knowledge, and their identity/position is vetted. In this example, it would almost certainly have to be someone on the K-State Basketball staff or athletics department. 2) They’re giving the information to the reporter on the condition that their name not be used in the story.
In this case, I’d expect the B12 to pressure K-state rather than the newspaper for the source. It’s not a big enough deal to take it to court to get the source, but at the same time the B12 is going to want to send a message that this kind of thing isn’t going to be tolerated.
