Ok here is the list. Who can we afford?

I would hope we would be attractive to guys like Mast from Bradley and Rhode from St. Thomas. They are both in top 15.

In going though Big12 transfers I noticed Cam Martin is leaving KU. He would be an intriguing option in the post. He is 6'9" & 240lbs. and was a D2 transfer who spent 2 years at KU. He redshirted year 1 at KU and then took a medical redshirt year 2. He had a shoulder injury.

He was a D2 all-american and is not a low post center on offense- over 3 years took nearly 300 3 point shots and made 39%. He shot close to 80% from the free throw line and average over 9rpg.

If Ward is coming back, Martin might be an interesting piece to a 3 headed monster in the post. Each with a different skill-set.

our last Kansas transfer who was at most a bench player for them didn't pan out to well for us. (But happy for Enaruna that he was able to shine at Clev. St)

Check out what KU did this year. No reason ISU can't attempt something like that for 2023/24. Small at 5 for most minutes, but long and athletic 1-4.

Harris Jr/Pettiford - Lipsey/Williams (defense and pass first PG, when they score the ceiling goes WAY up)
****/Yesefu - Our biggest need for a transfer 2 with size and shooting.
McCullar - Omaha/Watson (can stretch and defend 1-5)
Wilson - Milan/Watson/Omaha (Great length, can space and handle; Obviously not all Big 12 level but the talent is there)
Adams/Udeh - Tre King/Ward/BRE (I think we could outperform KU here with what is currently on the roster, adding a transfer to replace BRE or Ward would further that)

2-4 spots for KU were lethal as all those spots could guard at least 4 positions, all could stretch, and all could handle well enough to help break a press. I'm NOT saying our players next year will be as good as a #1 seed.. But if we can land the stud combo guard, we aren't as far off as some may think.

Omaha is a higher rated recruit than anyone on the KU roster. Milan is rated higher than Jalen Wilson was and most of the KU roster.. Lipsey was all Big 12 and gave us nothing in the shooting department. Williams was elite according to synergy at defense, like Harris.. Tre King's last 4 games, you could tell he was starting to find his game and settle in after two years off.. He's an off season away from giving us 75%+ of what KJ Adams gave KU, and I think BRE and Ward can give you more than Udeh gave KU in 2022/23..

Check out the lineup for most of the teams left in March Madness. You'll see shooting, a lot of non-traditional 5's, long guards and wings, and multiple ball handlers.

Let's say 2022/23 KU plays 2023/24 ISU and we land a nice SG, not the best, but proven and fans are happy.. There is no reason why Omaha Bilew and Tre King couldn't guard KJ Adams.

Lipsey/Williams
transfer 2
Omaha/Watson
Milan/Watson/Omaha
Tre King/Omaha

That lineup can guard 2022/23 KU all day long.. The difference is KU at 2-4 shot 182/512 (36%) from 3.. Lets assume Milan projects mid 30's, Omaha likely low 30's to high 20's.. We NEED a combo guard to be high 30's to low 40's. Tre King can stretch better than KJ, so we are at the advantage there. Harris did shoot 40% from 3 on the season, but digging into that some, he made 1/3 of those 3's in a 1 week stretch (12/31/22-1/7/2023). He was 33% for the other 33 games and around 27% for the month of March.. By committee, getting Lipsey and Williams to 28%-32% is attainable IMO.

Lipsey, Williams, Watson and Omaha are ELITE defenders. We just need SHOOTING at the 2!!!!!

Khalif Battle is my favorite right now. We need a solid 2 guard with a good outside shot. Combine a high volume shooter like him, it takes pressure off of Lipsey, making it easier for him to dish. Having a trio of shooters in Battle, Momcilovic, and even Biliew (he's got a fairly good outside shot), Lipsey will likely have a much easier role that he could thrive doing. The only worry I have is who we are going to use as our big man since Biliew seems more like a 3/4 and Momcilovic is a 4 but may be a 3 at the college level. If we land Battle and these freshman are as good as they're projected to be, we will be scary good next season.

More names will likely pop up, but Battle seems like a guy we should start going after.

I like Battle as well, but I feel like the fact we're choosing to pursue his teammate in Damian Dunn instead of him tells me there's a reason we may not

That would be a pre-season NCAA tournament team. Another guard piece like Nate Heise (UNI possible transfer according to UNI1ISU2) and that is a solid 8-9 guys to make a top 1/2 run in conference.. Keeping in my this next season, our team could be playing A LOT higher of a level in March versus January. Expecting two true sophomores, a pg coming off major surgery/injury, and two unproven freshman to hit their stride in month 1 of the best league in the country ... That's not going to happen

I like the comparison, especially Tre and Ward at the 5, but you gotta remember Wilson was such a stud that it is difficult to compare even a group of players to him. He led the Big 12 in points and rebounds, and was the unanimous POY. Also for a good portion of the season KJ Adams was one of the best players in the conference. Ultimately, I do think their lack of size is what got them knocked out early.

I didn't see this posted, but Kayden Fish finished his senior season at Staley with a 6A state championship. He ended up with 11pts and 6 rebounds. I haven't seen him play in person, but a friend of mine has a daughter that goes to Staley and has seen him play. He said that Staley had better talent than a lot of teams they played and that Fish was deceptively quick for his size with a good motor.

Write-up about the state championship:

This quote from the Staley coach sounds familiar to someone we know:
"We played really, really good defense," Neff said. "And that's where we hung our hat, whether it be conversations in time outs or in the locker room at halftime, and obviously every day prior to this day and all the kids we've ever coached ... if you defend, you've always got a chance. And we gave ourselves a chance through some of the lulls and lack of scoring we were going through."

I found another quote about Fish from an article earlier this year:
Kayden Fish’s feel is interesting. He has great hands on a strong frame with an understanding of how to find space. The 6-foot-6 power forward scored here at each level, knocking down a spot three to start things off and following it up with a drop-step two-handed dunk in traffic and an array of put backs and lay ups at the rim. Fish is a good area rebounder and he is a vocal defender. There was a lot of production to like with his game.

More thinking we could defend them, not score like them, but I agree that Wilson was a STUD! It would take a committee to replace his production. KJ Adams was great for 2/3 to 3/4 of the season. By the end of Big 12 play, he was far less affective in the PnR as teams figured out how KU wanted to feed him lobs and quick rolls to the rim.

Missing their HOF coach is the reason they lost.. Although UCONN looked like a national champ last night, so not sure they could have won, even with it likely being a home game in KC
