He either didn’t look up their head to head stats or he knowingly didn’t bring them up because he knew it’d make his argument crumble.

Are they even the same position?

Who had better teams to work with?

Pretty much the same position. Different style of players. Waukee NW was better overall and proved that on the court. Sandfort really had a great #2 and he carried them in their two wins against Omaha.

You seem very rational . For the record here are some of the stats:

Pryce Sandfort for Iowa’s Mr. Basketball for 2023. Leads in the following 4A Statistic Categories: Total Pts: 648 (1st) Boards: 285 (1st) FG Made: 223 (1st) FG Attempts: 418 (1st) 3 Pt Made: 90 (1st) 3 Pt Attempts: 211 (1st) Def Rebounds: 249 (1st)

Lined up against Omaha, he beats him in every every stat including total rebounds and shooting percentages. My ONLY argument was that Pryce did in fact deserve Mr. BB (since one of the children on here said he only won because of retired old IA sports writers voting). I acknowledged Omaha has by far the greater college/pro potential but that’s not what wins Mr. BB.

And as to why I’m here: my two boys graduated from ISU and I TRY to root for both teams.

Where did you graduate from?

IMHO, Omaha took himself out of the running (with Iowa journalists) when he chose an out of state prep school his junior year.

Not wanting to defend a hawk fan, I think all hawktj is saying is that Pryce was better on paper.

I think anyone that watched the two play would likely give the nod to Omaha.

Actually, a pretty thoughtful post. I agree with most of this. I take exception to the last sentence - a long career does not necessarily translate into a better career.
I do not think Omaha is a one and done, but 2 might be right.

The comparison gets complicated by Omaha’s various schools he played for.
Question - who had a better HS career Omaha or Milan M? I could easily argue Milan, even though he is not as highly rated.
AAU carries a lot more weight than high school play. I don't have the stats or know where Milan played AAU but Omaha has been competing at the top tier there for awhile.

So you consider Mr Basketball award for an entire High School career?

I personally look at it as the best player from the past year.

I don't have a strong opinion on awards. More often than not they are popularity contests.

I'm beyond excited to watch Omaha lace em up for us. I'd say the same for any of his recruits.

I was simply trying to offer suggestions as to why Iowa Sports writers might have chosen Pryce over Omaha. They clearly had reasons that don't pass muster given the disparity that actual talent services assign to the two.

We’ll, the better stats, winning Mr. BB, and winning 2 of 3 head to head would seem to indicate to a rational person that Pryce was the better high school player. Would I rather have Omaha over Pryce as a college recruit? Absolutely as he clearly has more potential. But, you may get him for only one year vs four for Pryce. That’s one we’ll just have to look back on in 4 years.
This isn’t wrestling. It’s a team game.

It’s not a high school career it’s one single year. And by the single year, Pryce put up better stats and I can 100% see why he won the award. The award however does not always dictate who the best basketball player is, just like in this case.

I think that’s how they would justify it if they were confronted

If Pryce was the better HS product, wouldn’t he be ranked (as a better HS product) than Omaha?

1. Glad to have our second McDonald’s All American.
2. Does anyone but Hawks care about Mr. Iowa Basketball?
3. Hoping some kid from Wilton or Dunkerton or other parts unknown wins Mr. Basketball for more Hawk bashing of smaller school guys, it’s such a great look.
