In Altoona they have this joint called Claxtons. It's actually right across the street from Kinfolks (Pretty decent), but Claxons is awesome.

While I do like Jethro's and frequent there more than any other due to the proxemity to my house, I put KC BBQ (E 15th and Court) up there for the food. Jethro's does offer atmosphere, TV's, unique sides and sauces and for my money the COLDEST draft beer in the metro. But as far as actual BBQ goes, I give a slight nod to KC BBQ.

Bandana's in Ankeny has decent grub and some of the best service I have ever had regardless of genre. I give them points just for that in this day and age.

Mango is solid as well.

Shane's is a joke, imo. It does not even mell like BBQ in there.

Cactus Bob's in Johnston is good. Brisket is great and tons of choices for different sauces.

I would agree. I am not a fan. Thier sauce is weak and doesn't taste like anything.

I love this thread as I have been looking for a good place after my favorite closed. Used to be Phat Boyz in the Cobblestone center. That guy could make some grub.

On the road...
Best BBQ imo is Jethro's. I've never had pulled chicken that is so juicy and tender. Flying Mango is great as well but I guess I wouldn't call that BBQ. It's in a class of its own. Off topic, but if anyone loves catfish, then Mango has the best Cajun Catfish I have ever tasted. Also Woody's is great but it has stupid hours of operation.

Talkin' Des Moines BBQ, just get in your car and drive down to the south where the real stuff is at!!

I love posts like this. Why go to Prairie Meadows? Just hop in your car and head to Gulfstream or Santa Anita. The DSM Civic Center? Nah, just grab your bike and peddle on over the Broadway.

Id have to give the nod to Smokey D's but I haven't really sampled that many. I will say to the guy that reccommends Claxtons and Kinfolks should have his tongue cut off, those two are the worst Ive ever had, especially Kinfolks. Felt like I was in a junior high lunch line, dryest brisket ever, and the beans were awful.

If anyone wants some great BBQ, during the Cyclone/KSU game in Kansas City, the American Royal BBQ Contest is going on, over 450 teams last year, the best of the best will be there. Smokey D's got 5th overall last year, if that tells you anything about there BBQ.

BBQ is not southern. It's regional.

Jamaican Jerk is probably the closest to the "original BBQ."

Georgia and Carolina BBQ is shredded pork, accompanied by either mustard based or cider-vinegar based sauces.

Memphis is dry rubs on pork ribs, and tame sweet sauce.

St. Louis is pork ribs with nasty-nasty tomato heavy sauces.

Kansas City is beef and pork ribs and ends with a sweet nectar sauce heavy on molasses and tang.

Texas is brisket with nasty-nasty tomato sauces.
