Don’t forget…this kid was perfect on field goals on the year coming in. And yes…weve had a bunch of great kickers over the years. A few poor ones.
Thank you for that first part admitting that you in fact have 0 idea what you're talking about. Gonna screenshot that for the next time we do this.I shouldn’t have ideas. I’m not a coach.
If you are honestly comparing prohm and Campbell, then you are even more delusional than I thought. Look—-I’ll defend our guys well past the appropriate time. It’s a fault of mine (although I like to think of it as being overly kind and realizing that I don’t know anything). So when Campbell has two straight bad seasons with no sign of improvement or hope, you can accuse me of that. But now? I’m simply hoping idiots like you don’t help to run off the best football coach we’ve ever had.
Also I’m not sure why you don’t think losing our RB during the game isn’t a big deal.
I learned a lot of lessons on how to deflect and dishonestly cover a football programI hope all the “football experts” listen to bruns podcast, and really pay attention and humble yourself.
I want to agree with you but this is year 7. If its an obvious issue to the coaches why didnt anything change in like year 4 or 5?Games like this can sometimes be a positive. Feel like this game painted in big block letters everything the program has fallen short on the last few years. There's a temptation to leave things be when things are going your way, if they had won this game people would have been talking about the elite defense and offense doing 'just enough'. Maybe losing is the kick in the bum the program needs. Idk, just looking for positives. They can play better than that, hopefully going forward they will.
Agree, their defense I thought actually looked quite good. Or at least were made to appear that way.Mevis was good and reliable. I think Assalley hits at least one of those.
It's a 'breaks' thing too like Hutch dropping a TD. I thought KU's DBs were also succinct when they got to the ball and the 'but their defense was so bad before Saturday!' narrative needs to stop; can a team not improve? And it's not like ISU was lighting up the score board prior to start.
Not going for it imo was a problem just in the mental aspect but who knows what happens after.
I appreciated the perspective he had about in reality losing 2 'senior' classes last year. It was a good reminder that we have a lot of youth on both sides of the ball. If we're having the same conversations at this time next year, maybe we can start panicking a little.I learned a lot of lessons on how to deflect and dishonestly cover a football program
The other thing I noticed is that the KU front did a ton of stunting, and our OL didn’t handle it well. That’s been a problem going back to the WVU game last year, when it looked like they had never seen a stunt before. Surprisingly, the OL got much better and handled Clemson’s stunts really well.
The things I hate is no lining up under center and sneaking the ball in short yardage situations. You know, the play the yields a successful conversion like 99.96% of the time. Do that instead of sending out the kid who had missed two easy kicks and was kicking for his local high school at this time a year ago. This is the Big 12, not pee-wee league.Hopefully Cartevious Norton can get healthy and bring some physicality to our run game. Man we are really struggling to run the ball. I shake my head every series we get into the red zone or short yardage situation and it's almost entirely passing. Sure it helps having a dynamic QB, but he needs some help in a big way.
It's because Dekkers is young, has an NFL caliber receiver in X, and he likes to watch the receiver he's going to throw to the entire time.Noel seemed to be open a lot but we didn't throw his way for whatever reason
It's a concern, but if another team tries to replicate I think they won't be as successful. Sometimes you gotta get your ass kicked in order to grow or improve upon something. Campbell teams certainly have demonstrated that MO in years past.I'm not sure any of this makes me feel better. One of the Big 12's worst defenses sat in shell all game but we still couldn't run or break open a short pass play. They were in Cover 4 and we couldn't find a way to run the ball or protect the QB.
That is a very, very bad sign.
I'd argue that we have been uniquely blessed (ISU standards) in the kicking dept over the course of the Campbell era. Netten, Owens and Mevis were all good to great kickers at the collegiate level. Granted, Owens and Mevis were kind of more like 1-year stop gap/rental types. Assalley was decent in the interim, on the level of a lot of Rhoads/Chiz/McCarney era kickers.Have we had great kickers? Iowa has had great kickers. I don't think we have, certainly not "a bunch of great kickers".
He is correct about that part. We did lose a lot. But he glazed over the fact that these issues happened last year and 2019 as well. He knows what the criticism is about and ignored the context on it to push the special teams and youth narrativesI appreciated the perspective he had about in reality losing 2 'senior' classes last year. It was a good reminder that we have a lot of youth on both sides of the ball. If we're having the same conversations at this time next year, maybe we can start panicking a little.
We started the game with two WR screens. I'm trying to remember if we ran those again or not. If they are in a cover four, that explains why we were popping those for like 5-6 yards. What I don't understand is why we went away from them. When you watch on TV you can't see the safeties movement and alignment very well. If they were cover 4, we needed to keep throwing those in every drive a few times to start pulling those safeties up, to counter or run game not working. If the safeties don't walk up, they will stretch their backers out. So if safeties come up, we have deeper throws, if the backers stretch out, our running lanes will loosen up some. We went away from WR screens almost immediately though. That's what happens when your offense is reduced down to being one-dimensional. That dimension was short forward and horizontal passing.
