Oddly, maybe Barta actually handled this decently for once.

Barta was dumb and released the initial press release based on some reports he was hearing.

Upon initial investigation, he found that the band decided to ignore directions and proceeded to aggressively and loudly ram its way into a crowd.

Knowing this doesnt look great for the Iowa band, maybe this is why Barta did what he could to close the book on the matter.

But some HMB members decided to blow it back up on social media and that ****** that up.

An acquaintance of mine who is a Hawkeye fan and has friends in the band said that the band members were in a confrontation of some kind (likely was was described here, with lots of people shoving into a small space), and when they brought it to U of I administration, they were told it would be taken care of internally ... a week went by, U of I administration did nothing, so then they started getting mad at their own leadership, that's what led to social media postings. He also said most band members were upset with their own leadership and the police (1 from U of I and 3 from polk co.) who were feckless and basically did nothing for putting them in that situation.

Most of us get why Pollard stated that the band didn't follow the recommended protocol to exit, but this is exactly why he needed to do it and it wasn't victim blaming.

Scott Dochterman's headline for The Athletic yesterday.

If reliable protections can’t be issued for visiting fans and team officials, it may be time to ice the Cy-Hawk series

Scott Dochtermn is a d*** bag and he's just catering to the "this game does nothing for Iowa" crowd."

They said they encourage any member of the U of Iowa Marching band who has anything to report to still file a formal complaint with the ISU police, and they will investigate that complaint.

That is not an excuse for how Iowa handled any of this though. LOL Iowa just provided a classic example of "how not to use social media 101"

Saddly, not entirely true. Just playing to their base and the **** will stick with them because they won't look past the initial reports since, even though mostly ********, that meets their perception.

Time to call for the resignation of the Iowa Director of Bands

Marching his students directly into a crowd of people, endangering them and those who where trying to exit to field, and failure to follow orders for Iowa State on safety concerns.

Iowa needs to release them if they don't resign
Its really this.

I've seen his stuff before and thought it was something that a Hawkeye blogger and not a reporter would write. Looked up his bio and that pretty much explained it. Annoys me that I get crap like this from small town nobodies with a paid subscription.

The Band Director obviously put the students into harm's way. Ignoring orders. Putting CHILDREN at risk in a hostile environment. Almost causing a riot.....that no one saw.... Then the University of Illinois - Iowa City Campus didn't do anything

Ames, Iowa: You'll never find a more wretched hive of scum and villainy

From the interests of the U of I athletic department that makes perfect sense.

But the first thing his department should have told any alleged victims, of course, was to report it to the police immediately. I'm not sure he (or his underlings did that). That's just the right thing to do, regardless of outcome. All too often, university officials at many, many universities fail to do that or, even worse, actively, seek to have reports handled "informally".

So I agree he may have been "decent" from the perspective of athletic department public relations (which is, of course, part of his job) but he was anything but decent as a human being if he failed to advocate strenuously for alleged victims and witnesses to report things to the police.

I totally understand why the Iowa band students/parents are pissed at the hawk leadership. The band/fan interaction isn't what should be the focus, it's the decisions made by the band director leading up to it and the UI administration trying to cover their asses by blaming the fans.

This situation could have happened in any stadium in America considering the circumstances. What's to say UI band leaders won't disregard safety and march their students into a bottle-necked crowd next away game? Having them play while leaving on top of it? What the hell is wrong with them?
