Burton might be the only player that can strike fear in the hearts of both Cyclone fans and the opposing team.

I get a little nervous when he's bringing the ball up court at full speed; I keep yelling, "Pass it to Monte !!"

He got two relatively quickly, but didn't foul again the rest of the game. He may need to get warmed up for a few minutes to really get in the groove (with fouls, with defense, with everything).

It helped that he was just locked on Lucas and the rest of the guys didn't let the drives to the rim get out of hand.

Yeah, sometimes when people complain about the lack of help or the lack of interior defense, they forget that someone out top got burned to make it matter. We've done a pretty good job of staying in front of other teams on the dribble. We have a much tougher time when they are passing quickly (and side to side).

Excellent analysis by Blum.

A couple of excerpts that hit nail on the head.

“His talent can be parts overwhelming and infuriating, often in the same sequence.”

“When Burton is clicking, it’s something to behold.”

He's the definitive oh-no/oh-yes player.

Man, the guy is just crazy to watch. Saw someone on Twitter during the game say "KU fans, let me introduce you to Good Diante". And when Good Diante is playing, watch the hell out. We'd all love for him to be more consistent, not turn the ball over and take bad shots, but when those shots are falling, he is unstoppable.

For Blum's comparison, I'd actually say a combination of Kenny Pratt, Royce White and Kantrail Horton. I've been impressed with how he uses his reach to poke balls away. That has led to a bunch of ISU points. I'm not real fond of him playing the 5 just because he isn't tall enough to guard and has to put too much energy into bodying up guys. That's why we need more contribution from Holden and Young.

We're just going to have to live with the inconsistency and hope that Good Diante comes out in the games where we need him most. I've never doubted his effort though.

Honestly, if Deonte can finish his Sr. season strong with a handful more games on big stages like Saturday, we could see him climb into NBA 1st round discussion. I'm not saying he'll be a lottery pick, but he has a tremendous opportunity before him, and is talented like nobody else on this team.

I do think that he'll get a shot. He's going to be helped playing more SF than PF/C at ISU. He can guard on the perimeter and his height won't hurt him as much at SF. I feel like he'll get drafted and start out in the D-League like Nader.

He was giving Mason fits. He certainly has a knack for getting his hand on the ball. That can lead to cheap fouls or getting out of position but once again, that's the Burton enigma we live with.

I've said it a lot lately, but when he is locked in, there is not a single player in the entire nation that can guard Deonte Burton. However, when he's off, he can literally guard himself. Case in point: the KU game, down 1, 7 or so mins left. Burton gets the outlet pass off the save by Naz, dribbles up the floor. Literally almost loses his dribble for a second, completely unpressured, then pulls up for an off balance deep three with no one down low and freaking buries it over Josh Jackson, who is KU's best defender.

There's no middle ground with Deonte Burton. It's either amazing or terrible. And it can literally vary by possession.

When he's on, he's a terrifyingly agile guard type player with the body of a linebacker. He can hit any shot on the floor, contested or not, but you cant contest or he'll blow by you and slam it home. He has shown also a sufficient passing game by being able to swing the ball off the drive. Great defender with insane hops that can block, is agile to stay in front of a guard but physical enough to body a smaller big man down low. Quick hands.

When he's off, he's lazy on pick and roll defense and frequently loses his man. Doesn't contest shots, gets pushed around down low. Offensively he takes terrible shots, even against a double team. NEVER passes the ball..if he drives, he WILL put it up. Ball handling goes down the drain, sometimes losing his dribble without pressure.

If he can become good Burton for 75-80% of the time, he'll earn an NBA paycheck. He might need a jump in levels to put his game all the way together, like a BDJ (or Abdul Nader) type.

Bingo. Good for you, Carver.

I enjoy reading Blum, but this is one article that I hope Burton personally doesn't read. It's another public expression - this message board is littered with them - from someone saying he's inconsistent and his actions "infuriating." That may be from a fan's perspective, but I beg the rest of you for the remainder of the season to go easy on the guy. He's out there trying his best and he needs people believing in him and behind him, rather than ready to jump on his first mistake as so many of the message board posters do. I'm quite confident he beats himself up when he makes a mistake and doesn't need everyone piling on. I'm not criticizing Blum so much, as asking the rest of you to stop with the Burton hating we read so much and ask yourself before you type: "would you say this to his face?" If not, don't post it.

Maybe my sensitivity with criticizing players comes from playing one year of small college ball where a few negative things were said about me which I knew to be untrue, and that was tiny, infinitesimally small change and publicity compared to the public scrutiny these guys receive, but I can't imagine all this negativity I read about the team, as if they're aren't trying their best, is easy to take for these guys and I don't believe it helps them be better. Got to be tough to be a player in the era of social media.

So, a plea for the remainder of this Senior class' term: before you spout off and call some play or player stupid, etc. just realize they know they made a mistake and they're already beating themselves up for it (or the coaches will); they don't need you to pile on. Just enjoy the ride the rest of the way.

Your post makes way to much sense to happen. Especially the "would you say it to his face" rule. The internet makes many a Championship caliber coach or all star player while never stepping out of their living rooms.
