Prohm has no choice but to play Burton major minutes. He is the best we have. We just need to hope the "Texas" Burton starts showing up with more regularity or it might be a long year.

Unfortunately, you are right. Just stinks that ISU doesn't have anyone to defend the post. Really sucks, but this team is only going to succeed by making outside shots and causing turnovers. Prohm really needed to get a grand transfer big, and it didn't work out.

Coaches don't get to make these types of mistakes very often. We knew we had to have a serviceable big and it didn't happen. TCU had fifty plus in the paint and at one point, in the second half, five consecutive offensive possessions.

We had so many turnovers that got booted around and we ended up losing. Sometimes the ball just doesn't bounce your way. I liked the effort out of everyone other than Burton tonight.

that was very frustrating, I will agree. Three or 4 times we were headed the other way for a dunk and lost it and gave one up on the other end.

Prohm's biggest problem this year was that Malou didn't make it, Lard didn't qualify, Simeon Carter didn't get any better and likely never will, and Holden was a swing and a miss.

But a lot of that is on Prohm. He had to know the situations with Malou and Lard looked really shaky, he had to know Carter just doesn't have it, and Holden was just a scouting miss or something.

But we really have one "big" in Young that can actually play. Burton and Bowie are not "bigs" in any sense. Burton is more of a guard, and Bowie is a 3 probably.

We are completely hamstrung without any size whatsoever in the paint. TCU killed us in the paint all night.

No way Burton should be playing more than 20 min a night. The bad totally outweighs the good with him. He's going to lose us more games than win. Too bad the other seniors have to finish their careers with him. Maybe harsh, but true.

I'd bet Shaka Smart disagrees.

You have to start Burton, but if he misses his first couple shots or just doesn't look interested, then he needs to get benched after 5 mins or so.

Let him sit for about 10 mins and think about whether he wants to play anymore tonight or not? Then put him back in late in the first half and see if you get any better effort out of him or not? If you don't, then you bench him to start the 2nd half, then put him in again about 5 mins into the 2nd half and see what you get.

Of course, if he starts the game on fire and looks to be into it, then you ride him all night.

I was pretty shocked to see him just being rotated normally through the game. He doesn't deserve the Monte "you come out at this time every game" treatment.

Most nights he deserves the minutes he gets, but in a game like this, Prohm needs to do a better job understanding when Burton is having a cancerous game to get him on the bench more. Part of being a good coach is managing rotations to different situations in games, and I don't think Prohm is the best at that.

This is the worst I've seen an Iowa State starter play over this long of stretch. The fact that Burton is playing over 30 minutes while consistently shooting under 20% is ludicrous and it scares me that Prohm is too afraid to take Burton out of the game for any meaningful length of time when he's playing that way

Uh...did you see the last 10 minutes of the Texas Tech game at home? Burton was not on the floor.

I honestly think they need to quit coaching him. Just let him play with instinct. To many people in his ear making him a headcase. He is unbelievable talented, he doesn't need to be in his head all game. It's make him a step slow.

Burton's a 6'4" "tweener" who they are forced to use as a power forward. Does pretty good when he is guarded by a slow power forward or a smaller guard who he can take to the hole. Takes time off loafing down court on defense if not involved directly in the play. Would be a sixth or seventh man off the bench on most Power 5 conf teams which was what he was last year when he fed off Niang and McKay. Biggest laugh was when he declared early for the draft last year after the season which was allowed by new rules. He has talent and works hard in spurts but does not bring it 100 % of the time. Probably gets frustrated now that he has to play inside the paint and battle taller opponents most of the time. Its not all his fault, he is a victim of the available personnel and is playing out of position.

Prohm had to play Burton...Brodziansky was killing us, and Young tried and failed. Burton had a bad game, but Prohm had no option but to keep him in.

Not sure which game you were watching, but Young didn't do as badly as you are making it seem.

Burton just seemed really out of it today. At halftime, he came out of the locker room quite a bit later than everybody else. I don't get to see games live often, so maybe that is normal for him, but it seemed odd. Several times during the game, teammates were trying to encourage him. On offense, he looked really indecisive about whether to drive or shoot the three, which unfortunately took away any speed advantage he might have had over the TCU players. Again, it just looked really odd.

Burton is a difference maker when he is on and if so we can play with anyone but more often than not he is a detriment. Play Babb and Young more. I'd like to see what Babb and Young could do with more playing time.

I didn't get to see the game on T.V. but heard on radio. TCU getting 50+ points in the paint says it all. Why doesn't this team try switching to zone if we are getting hammered in the paint and smoked on the boards? Why not Babb, Burton, and Young defending the paint and rim in a zone?

Good point, though a zone isn't always great for rebounding as no one has a set man to box out. Definitely might help for hiding some size problems at times.

Babb and Young, at this point, cannot hope to give you the potential that Deonte brings. I think Coach Prohm just has to watch it closely and once it's clear that it's one of those nights, implement plan B.
