Pluto's text to new planet:

"Congrats, but don't trust 'em, they'll start pretending like you don't exist in a few decades."

This article is bunk. We've known about planet X for a long time.

That's what is strange to me. We are examining things thousands of times further away, but this one just got found? Seems odd, but I suppose the distances involved are a bit mind blowing.

I'm not an astronomer, but I think it's basically this:

We find exoplanets in other solar systems when they transit (cross in front) of their star and the star dims slightly. This planet is not between the sun and us, so it doesn't transit the sun. It's also far enough away from any other stars that they wouldn't dim enough for us to notice. Finally, it's not found like the other planets in our solar system were because it's so far from our sun that it's not illuminated enough for us to see it easily.

I hope they fire the people on the naming committee that came up with Uranus.

To the literate, Uranus was named after the Greek god of the sky. According to myth, he was the father of Saturn and the grandfather of Jupiter. Pretty apt.

My favorite line from the article:

"but it was far too small to tug meaningfully on Uranus."

Giggity!
