I was excited by the hiring of CMC, but after the nepotism of bringing all-things-Toledo... I'm a bit dismayed. Seriously? The only person we could find to step into a B12 OC coaching position is a Toledo position coach?

One thing I loved about Hoiberg when he came to ISU is that he brought an old sage with him to help him out early. I sure would have loved to see CMC admit his youth in a P5 and hire a couple of old sages to help out.

Praying I'm overwhelmingly shocked when bowl-season rolls around next year! I'll gladly come on here and eat crow!!! In fact, I'll gladly change my user-name to TXCrowEater (tastes like chicken)!

Hoiberg had never coached 1 second of college basketball as an assistant or head coach. CMC has a lot of coaching experience so he doesn't need a Bobby Lutz type.

Sure, Coach Campbell. I understand your point, but disagree. Regardless, welcome to Iowa State!

Football is football. Doesn't make a damn bit of difference if it is P5 or not. You teach the guys the same things and develop them in similar ways for either group. The big difference is level of talent. P5 experience or not, the big thing is to be able to get P5 talent to buy into your program and I think this coaching staff will be able to do that well enough to win in this conference.

It's fine to have a first time OC when then HC is also a former OC. Especially when they've worked together for years and will run the same offense.

Hmm. Zero OC experience? That's a lot of faith. Your OC and DC are the two most important staff positions and can ,are or break your program. Not saying he won't be good just a little concerning..no?
I agree the the OC is important. Also think that we need a strong OL coach. It will be hard for the OC to succeed if we have sub par line play. Hoping that MC has a strong candidate in mind for that position.

Our OC is the OLine coach, and one of the best OL coaches in college football... Still young too.

Manning is pretty highly regarded and has been with Campbell for years. I figured this would be the natural choice after Candle went back to Toledo.

Although Campbell's recruiting has been a bit of a nice surprise, I'm pretty underwhelmed by his coaching hires.

This one seems like a desperate move that was made because he couldn't get anyone better.

As always, I'll give him the benefit of the doubt until proven otherwise. It couldn't get much worse than 2 or 3 wins like we have been getting. It could be as bad, but not likely worse.

I trust Campbell and he trusts Manning which leads me to believe this is the best hire in college football history. At this point it's just a matter of when we crack that 4 team playoff.

:jimlad:

But seriously, if MC thinks Manning is the best option, I have no reason to question him.

It also worked out for Urban Meyer at Florida when he hired his buddy Dan Mullen, who was just a QB coach at a Moutain West Conference member Utah, as the OC at Florida prior to having any OC experience.

Don't necessarily agree with this...coordinators need to game plan and make in-game adjustments.

Give me a coordinator who can scheme and make adjustments with inferior talent any day...that's the mark of a good coach. It's why teams like K-State are able to beat teams they shouldn't.

While talent plays a part, if these coaches can do that they can be successful without getting the best talent.

Missed this in the press release, thanks for the update. Did some googling and found that 68% of OCs are also position coaches. Of the 68% that are position coaches 20% are OL coaches.

It's almost like coaches are networked within the coaching circles, and know before other people who will be good coaches as they move up the ladder. Huh who would have thought?

In my 30 or so years of being a Cyclone fan I would say our best OC was Steve Loney. He was also our Offensive Line coach. I do not believe he had some stellar resume when he was appointed to the OC spot 20 years ago. I am willing to give this a chance especially if Campbell is still going to be involved in the play calling. I thought the 2 best offenses in the Big XII were OU and Baylor. How experienced were their OC's???

I like the hire. Might as well go ALL IN on the young coaches (that our young head coach feels very comfortable with) and see what happens... something we have NEVER tried before. We've tried basically everything else. What is the worst thing that can happen? Some of you are sounding like you think Rhoads had the perfect age demographic on staff. How was that working out?

I mean seriously. What do we have to lose? It's CMC's job, his staff, his team, his record at ISU. He can hire whoever he needs, and I'd be stupid to think that I know more about what he thinks he needs from subordinates than I do.

Will it work out? I don't know, but I'm actually excited that we are doing something different this time.

The more different the better as far as I'm concerned. What we have been doing forever hasn't worked.
