Hasn't whitewater been a powerhouse for a long long time? He basically just had to not screw it up

He lost 3 games in 6 years and they were all in one year which is hardly "not screwing it up."

That said, I don't know. It's another guy that I question his ability to recruit and attract other coaching talent. Clearly he knows football. He's like the anti-Brady Hoke. The leaked names have no consistency in this search.

My philosophy is that successful people will be successful wherever they go. Successful people love a challenge. This is the same knock that Harbaugh had when he went to Stanford. He seemed to make it work OK.

Your philosophy is not anything that resembles reality.

Here's the thing with Liepold.

Bob Berezowitz was at Whitewater for 30+ years. They were D-III runner-up in 2005 and 2006, then Liepold took over and won a bunch of titles. He didn't have to build anything, he got tossed the keys to a sports car and didn't crash it.

Pass.

I'm confused by this mentality. Is the idea of some fans that our program needs to be scrapped and rebuilt?

Do people realize he coached at Wisconsin, Nebraska, and Nebraska-Omaha before taking over at UW-Whitewater?

When he took over at UW-W, yes they had just been runner up in the DIII title game the last two years, but had never won a title in program history. Leipold proceeded to win a title in his first year, then again, and again, and again, and again, and again.

Leipold is the fastest coach to 100 victories in the history of football. The previous coach he beat was Gil Dobie, who is a charter member of the College Football Hall of Fame. I'm very familiar with Dobie from our Jack Trice research--Dobie only went 58 - 0 - 3 at U of Washington. Slacker.

We could do a lot worse, and in fact have done much worse many times.

Yeah they recruit. But from my experience, at least in Iowa, it was basically look in the paper at who got any type of post season honors in your state, and give those guys a call and a look.

Pretty much. "Son, we're pretty impressed by your honorable mention all conference in 1A ball, we'd like you to come play for us in the Iowa conference"

Absolutely he should be looked at.

Head coach experience? Check
Proven winner for sustained period of time? Check

Recruiting is going to be an issue no matter who we hire. It always will be at Iowa State. You hire assistants you think can bring in players and you let a guy like this go to work to do what he does best.....game plan to WIN FOOTBALL GAMES!

I'll take this guy or Fritz before I'd take Alford, Frost, or any other high level assistant.

The thing with UW-W is they get a lot of talent that can't make the cut at Wisconsin. They choose to stay instate with a program they are familiar / loyal to vs. going to a low tier d1 school, or d2 school. The talent gap is just ridiculous most years for them.

This guy is the type of guy that makes a HC. That's why you have Coordinators and position coaches. They deal with the minutia of the day to day football details. While HC oversees the program and interjects where he sees things that need attention.

You make an interesting case, Kagavi. I still don't think this will end up being the guy, but it's an interesting thought.

So he's lost as many games in one season at the FBS level as he did in eight in Division III. Buffalo is 5-6 right now in his first year there. Not ideal.

He'd be on Iowa State-type radars if he goes something like 9-3 at Buffalo next year. But this is a gamble as it is.

We're in no position to hire a "sure thing". Gotta roll the dice on someone.

Personally i would not be in favor of this hire.

I will put a spin on it differently. I do think that coaching is coaching. But, being a great coach at a smaller school, may not be the same as being a great coach where your facing off against other great coaches.

Secondly - i think we tried this with McDermott. Great coach, but, never got the idea of recruiting larger then the MAC. I'm afraid someone like that will have a limited recruiting network and focus on upper midwest kids as thats what he's done in the past to win. For this coach to be successful he has to be reaching wider then Iowa, Wisconsin, Minnesota.

This coach needs to have an outstanding track record with Jucos - they will be our pipeline when Snyder steps down. We need to recruit system fit players or athletes i don't care which or both. But, have a plan when that kid arrives. Don't waste two years waiting for development and then say, i think you would be a better wide receiver or linebacker.

This would be a serious reach in my opinion. Nothing against his qualifications, but, it would obviously not be favorable to the image of what or who we needed to hire to be successful at ISU.

My guess is that Jamies trying to throw off a smoke screen ala Brian Kelly..... My favorite at this point is still either Frost or Fritz. Choose your poison - Young energetic midwestern kid.... or Experienced JUCO vet that can instantly improve your JUCO recruiting and has had success as a HC at every stop he's been at.....

Just think of all the opinions/angles/what-ifs/preferences/etc. that have been already discussed about our yet-to-be named next coach. No way I would want to be Pollard right now. And save the, "that's what he gets the big bucks for" line. Just saying it seems impossible to do two things- 1.Guarantee he'll find the coach who gets us to the next level and 2. Hire a guy that fits ALL the traits we all seem to think we need. (experience, winner, leader, great recruiter, understand the culture, adjust to defenses). Like many of you have already said, he's going to have to bring on a good staff to do it all.

No offense, but you should be scared by your McDermott comment. Because that is exactly what we did with Prohm. Except Prohm was at a smaller program and had less NCAA tournament appearances.

I don't agree with that comment, but.....

Too much of a risk. Would like a coach that has more experience at the FBS and/or FCS level.

Well, Leipold coached at Nebraska, Wisconsin, and Nebraska-Omaha for a combined 15 years, right before taking over at UW-W as the head guy. I'm sure that meets your criteria. The lack of experience in certain areas isn't as big of an issue with large coaching staffs in football that can hire coordinators and assistants to fill in the recruiting gaps.

Just to emphasize again: Leipold broke the record of a guy (Dobie) who went UNDEFEATED for nearly a solid decade, a record that wasn't broken for 93 years.

Meanwhile, we just lost a game because we didn't know how to take a knee to win.

didnt prohm have a couple get drafted or go to the nba? He was getting quality and/or developing it. McD just got to the tourney and the players didn't move on, outside his own kid.

At Wisconsin - Grad Assistant, means nothing.
At Nebraska - well interesting you should say that, because his bio lists him as a Nebraska assistant, do you think they missed him on their bio sheet....

According to these descriptions, he was never an assistant during that timeframe....hmmm George Leary here we come!!!!

I think it is funny that many of us who don't do this for a living, think that a guy who has actually coached college aged kids with great success can't figure out everything you just wrote in that post.

If this guy is a great motivator, and CEO type, he very well might be successful here. What if he hired Sturdy as the OC then put either Seneca or Sage under him, then found a similar symmetry on the defensive side of the ball.

To think the guy wouldn't be smart enough to know he has to cast a wider net is really insulting.

I am not saying he is the guy for the job, but think about what you are saying before you spew something that makes you think you are smarter than a man that has been in the business for more than half of his life.

Go look at where Bill snyder coached before he got to KSU. It isn't that much different than what this guy has done. Power 5 coaches need to be able to manage people and get the most out of their coaches and players. While also recruiting the next class. This guy for all intents and purposes has done at least half that to this point. Recruiting is always going to be a question for whoever gets hired at ISU. Unless Urban or Saban are walking through that door there are not guarantees that any one can bring kids to ISU. So JP should get the guy he feels is going to manage the players and coaches the best.
