Can't give up 6 HRs and expect to win, even if you run off Arrieta in the 6th inning with a 6.35 ERA for the night. Who saw that coming, by the way? Wind blowing out at Wrigley...

Game 4 tomorrow and STL has to win. Lynn is scheduled to start but Lackey could go on short rest. It will be interesting to see what Matheny does. For the Cubs I assume Hammel is going tomorrow with Lester ready for Game 5 if needed.

Matheny announced Lackey is starting tomorrow night on short rest for the Cardinals. I imagine it would have been Lynn if STL won tonight.

have to throw lackey tomorrow and hope it's blowing in, and Lynn doesn't pitch like Wacha and Garcia, all 3 have been basically throwing BP in Sept/Oct, this team was cooked when Martinez went down, still a good year 100 wins is not bad at all

Not sure how the Cubs will be able to handle Lackey.

Only threw 86 pitches on Friday. Not like he's worn down.

It was also his second highest game score of the year, which is kind of scary with how good he has been this year.

Lackeys career on 3 days rest:

2 GS
1-1
4.82 ERA
1.71 WHIP

It's a huge question mark but STL's hand is kind of forced. This team is really broken down right now and the last starts for Garcia and now Wacha show that. STL is probably the worst team (I mean on Oct. 12, not season-long) out of all eight in the playoffs right now. Not trying to take anything away from the Cubs because they might be the best, but tonight when we had back-to-back at bats in a crucial part of the game taken by Greg Garcia and Tony Cruz that really sunk in for me.

The only real chance STL has to scratch out this series is send Lackey out there tomorrow and hope that he is dealing and get a win with the backs against the wall, then come back home to St. Louis and hope the emotion in an elimination game help propel this team to a win there. But I just can't see this team with this pitching and this lineup (considering their health) giving much of a challenge to the Mets or Dodgers. The Cubs would make the NLCS a much better matchup I'm afraid.

I almost hate that we are saving Lester for game 5. I know I am in the minority on that, but I would much rather have him for 4-5 innings and then let the bullpen take over than going almost full bullpen tomorrow. If the Cards win tomorrow, going back to StL really scares me. Lester and Ross are pretty much automatic outs and I would rather have that at home than on the road.

p.s. fellow Cub fans, I really hope I didn't just go full Bode.

I like those stats. Here's hoping John Lackey remembers that he's John Lackey tomorrow.

I'm with you, especially with Lackey going tomorrow. However, I do see the other side.

Both the ERA and WHIP are pretty much in line with the average for pitchers on three days rest from 2000-13. And teams' aren't throwing their back end starters on short rest, it's almost always one of their top guys. Throwing on short rest is hardly ever a better option.

No, Bode would be like

"Yeah you should be scared. My teams going to kill you. We win in a sweep. Hammel strikes out 27 on 81 pitches

I heard this on the radio the other day, what would be more impressive (obviously will never ever ever happen):

Striking out 27 on 81 pitches

OR

Retiring 27 on 27 pitches.

I know it's not entirely the pitcher's choice, but it seems like heroball. It is also, IMO, a bad choice based off of anecdotes and data from years past.

That being said, I'm sure Lackey is loading up extra hard on brats, beers, and hooker kills and will be great tomorrow.

Striking out 27 on 81 would take a lot more luck

Wonder what happened to Bode and 1970. They certainly have no problem embarrassing their fan base before the games start but can't ever seem to show up after the game.
