Thought it would be fun to map out where all 68 teams are located. Typical concentrations around North Carolina and Indiana can be found. One thing I found interesting is the talent along the I-35 corridor. For those of you who like maps like I do, enjoy!

I'm curious who thought it was a good idea to have both Portland and Seattle as first weekend sites.

Ever since I saw the subregion sites for this season, I couldn't figure that out, either. College basketball power is so east-centric (and somewhat south-leaning) having two NW sites in the same year didn't seem to make sense. (But I suppose they don't select sites with too much geography in mind anyway; I don't know much about that process).

28 of 68 are west of the Mississippi. Anyone know if that's a typical percentage?

Maybe it is, but considering Pac-12 got only 4 bids, even considering certainties w/ automatic bids, that seems "higher than average." (Having 6 of 7 Big 12 teams in that region probably balances Pac-12's somewhat low representation).

My quick count shows 21 of the field's at-large teams are west of Mississippi. (A few of those also won auto-bids, but would have been in the field anyway).

I just counted 25 from the year when the state of Texas didn't have a single team. 27 last year.

I'd like to see two lists ranking all states.

1. Percentage of eligible teams in tourney
2. Teams per capita

Your wish is my command. Well, half of it. Im too lazy to look up all the universities.

Here is a quick break down of teams by state per capita. Looks like Wyoming, Idaho, and DC unfairly bring up the lead in terms of the most schools per person. Florida, California, and Illinois bring up the rear.

West-of-Mississippi-River breakdown (sounds like a viable album title. But I digress)

Automatic bids (7)
Eastern Washington
New Mexico State
North Dakota State
SF Austin
Texas Southern
UC Irvine
Wyoming

At-large (21) (*denotes auto-bid, would have been invited anyway)
Arizona*
Arkansas
BYU
Baylor
Boise State
Gonzaga*
Iowa
Iowa State*
Kansas
LSU
Northern Iowa*
Oklahoma
Oklahoma State
Oregon
SMU*
San Diego State
Texas
UCLA
Utah
Wichita State

Additional details matter, such as distribution of league makeup east vs. west. I think at six have membership exclusively west of the river, and a few have almost no reps to the east. But the list above is a starting point.

What's the team from Illinois? If you think it is Robert Morris Univ., that school is NAIA, and their nickname is the Eagles. The Cyclone Hockey Club plays them four games every season. The one in the Dance is located in Moon Township, Allegheny Co., PA, just outside Pittsburgh. As a result there are three teams from PA.

Well done. I don't know why, but I do enjoy a good map.

I was also trying to figure out what IL team magically got into the dance.

Not to derail thread but does anyone else find humor in Boise St having to play at Dayton? I guess the sports gods wanted some karma for all the teams that had to play a true road game for a Bowl game. Suk it BSU!!

How about Gonzaga playing in the South? They keep trying to find a region each year they can win.
