The "Spread Offense" has got to go

My issue continues to be that we do NOTHING well. We have no identity at all. We are typically getting recruits that are passed on by better teams (with a few exceptions obviously). I wish we had an identity that we could sell to better players.

Iowa has Oline and defense.
Tech has QBs.
Baylor has offense. Go there and you will light up the stat sheet.
Wisconsin has Oline and RBs.

We need something, anything to try and gain a recruiting advantage.
Punting has been strong!

The problem is the transition from a spread offense would be rough. Long term I agree in a lot of ways that we need to do something different from everyone else but if we did make a change Rhoads and the entire staff would not still be around by the time they rebuilt the roster. If this staff wants to keep their job they have to stop trying to change what we are doing and focus on getting better at what we are doing. Hopefully a year of not changing the offense allows it to finally improve and then the light turns on for some players to improve dramatically.

Would changing offensive schemes makes us worse than what the fans have experienced the last few years? Although I do agree that if ISU were to change offensive schemes it would not happen under this coaching staff.

To make an any offense work, you need a QB that knows how and is willing to run it.

It's a vicious circle. You have to win to attract better talent. But you need to have better talent to win. So e have to find a way to win with what we have. Not going to be easy.

While I agree with you in theory, the O-Line is even more important in a power/pro style offense. Do you see why I would question this idea?

I completely agree with the OL statements. Our OL is the equivalent of an average FCS school. UNI and NDSU have had better lines, on both sides of the ball, for the last few years. We recruit way to many 250 lb O-line, and 220 lb D-line.

I don't think the spread offense is the problem. I think what we do in our spread is the problem.

We don't have a QB that we feel comfortable with running the zone read and have little to no run game at all. You have to be able to run the ball in any type of offense to be successful.

We also don't get very creative with formations. By using different sets you can create mismatches where your man wins.

That leads to the last point. A spread offense is designed to spread teams out. However, you can spread teams out and get the match up you want without 4 wides etc. Take the difference between the Bears and Packers for example. Bears throw 3 wides out there a lot but rarely use formatioms to their adv. The Packers by comparison rarely use more then 2 wides but use WR's lined up in the backfield in 2 back and get mismatches all over the place. (I understand that they will have 3 wr's on the field but most of the time they use them in creative ways.)

Right now we run a Spread by name and because we are in 3-4 wides a lot. We don't spread teams out. I would like to see us run an offense thay spreads teams out using multiple formations, running and passing the ball and using multiple sets.

Edit - sorry for original typos posted from phone

Sure, but we are in the top 25 in punts per game (3 way tie for 25th). I was actually surprised by that, as I figured we would be top 5 for sure.

Top 25, baby!

The "spread offense"? I think we need to get rid of the "spread defense". You know, where we "spread" our cheeks and let the other team do whatever they want?

We run a spread? What this team is doing doesn't look like a spread offense at all. They don't throw down field, every route is a stop route or curl route and they always throw into traffic.

No matter what scheme you run it will work well if you run it right and well. 10 years ago Barney Cotton was hired because the fans wanted ISU to run the spread. 5 OC's later and 5 different ways of running it non have really worked, the way fans think it should work.

You've basically described what the spread offense is.

I think we need to punt less, you don't see good teams punting 10 times a game :jimlad:
