I know this comment will not go over well, but here goes.
I think JP should make a splash and throw big money at Bo Pellini to come over as a DC/Assistant Head Coach. I'm not sure Bo would even consider the position, but money talks and i think he is exactly what we need on the defense.
Like others have said, it's worth a shot. The worst that can happen is Pelini/Muschamp say no.

Yeah not really sure why people get slammed for saying atleast try and get em. Many said the same about Mangino.

"We should probably try for Nick Saban and Jim Harbaugh, too. Maybe Gus Malzahn would take a job as our film editor/Assistant Director of Football Operations."

This comment serves no purpose. It only proves to show that sarcasm is a trait even the ignorant can master.

what DC would touch this job given that PR is likely out in a year or two if he doesn't win more games? Why leave a job you have job security in to one where you might be shown the door in a year?

Most likely is

a: PR is the DC for next season
b: PR promotes someone up, i'm guessing that's Shane.

Not that I would disagree with a Burnham firing however he lost a lot from his front 7 prior to this year. Lost George due to graduation. Coe and Irving (and I believe a number of others?) were kicked off, injured or what have you prior to the season. Say what you want about Coe and Irving but they would've started for us this year and helped out tremendously. Again, I won't shed a tear if Burnham leaves but your front 7 is where it's at in football. They stop the run, they put pressure on the qb (or if you're us - don't pressure them) and make it easier for the backs.

The problem is personnel not schemes. Bringing in a new coordinator for 2015 won't change who we have on the field. I don't think CPR makes a coordinator change going into his "make-or-break" year.

Shoot for the stars. Ditka for HC, DC, and OC. We'd only lose to a hurricane named Ditka.

Back on point - I think Wally is going to hang it up. As has been noted previously, he was toying with retirement last year and stayed on, I think to help CPR not have to deal with 2 new coordinators. With Mangino no longer being new, I think he'll retire gracefully and go back to Florida where it's warm in the winter time.

That may be true, but assistants also recruit. It's partially his fault that the talent level isn't as strong as it could be.

I didn't say he would come here. All I said was why not give a call, he might laugh at it who cares. I get tired of this attitude that we are Iowa State and we shouldn't expect people to want to come here. We have an AD that is willing to invest in the program, our facilities are on par with most of the Power 5, we are going to have the 3rd largest stadium in the Big 12, and we have loyal fanbase. That is a losers attitude, and my friend if you think we aren't worth it, you are a joke and should just hide behind a made up user name and continue your attacks. I on the other hand, think if you are going to win big in the world you need to think big.

Iowa State is one of the toughest jobs in FBS football. Maybe the hardest of the P5 schools. Our head coach will most likely be on the hot seat next year. Do you honestly think that Muschamp would consider, for even a second, coming to Ames and coaching for a year only to get fired again? Especially when he got a nice buy-out and can afford to be selective.

Come on. There is no other way to describe that thinking other than just dumb.

There are a lot of reasons that a DC would look at ISU. First if someone is from the MAC, the jump in pay is going to be huge, and ISU could be a great stepping stone (actually has been) for a young DC. I think you underestimate how confident coaches are that they can do a better job than the last guy. Heck, half the guys posting on here think they could do a better job than Wally. Also, as I stated before, there could be someone pretty good that is let go when a head coach is fired. Certainly don't want to go after Nebraska's DC, but there is probably a team ready to swing the axe on a HC of a team with a terrible offense and a decent defense.

Looking at it a different way, if Wally has confidence in what he has coming back and coming in next year, it makes a lot of sense for him to stay and help lead the team to a better season next year. Then if he wants to retire, Rhodes would have an easier time replacing him. There is no way Wally should be fired on performance. Even this year, the defense is performing at least as well as the offense despite some pretty obvious deficiencies in personnel.

The second I see someone spell RHOADS incorrectly said poster loses all merit in my book. Then to go on and see that poster has 14 posts and thinks the defense is performing "at least as well" as the offense, I kick the legs out from under my own chair.

Or he could think that if the defense markedly improved, but record didn't he would be in line for the head coaching position. Also, if the defense and record both markedly improves what a huge selling point to get in line for another head coaching position -- not many can say that on their resume. Yes, Iowa State possess significant challenges that many other P5 schools don't face, some individuals focus on these challenges, I tend to think in the opposite light and focus on what it offers that other schools can't. Depending on how good of a salesperson we have making the calls, one can make a great case for ISU.

Not to preach but some of us see opportunity where others find excuses why not. I was told that coming back to Iowa to start up a business was crazy and would be much easier to stay in Texas. There is a different business environment and challenges that I faced initially in IA compared to TX, but it also provided an opportunity for those willing to see it. Now after 4 years I own 4 businesses and these same individuals are coming to me for advise.

It is not worth getting in to a squabble because obviously we have completely different viewpoints. However, I find ironic and humorous for someone with Johnny as their avatar to be on this side of an argument. Have you forgotten what a long shot it was to get him.....I think that worked out pretty well for both parties. He became a legend here and revered, in return we set a stage of history and tradition to get the coaches we have had. It just takes one big gamble to pay off my fellow Cyclone.

This is the answer. Based on Paul's job status, it will be hard to find a good DC willing to take an one year chance. Or even a 4 game chance, because lets face it: we will know Rhoad's fate after the first four games. 4-0/3-1 and he will likely be around for another year. Anything less and he's gone.

If you can't make your case on the merits, go for the technicalities, I guess. The last two games were easily winnable if the offense performed anywhere close to average Big12 standard. The previous two seasons (at least) before this one have been a constant story of the defense playing very near the potential of the personnel, only to have an offense that led the league in three-and-outs. This year, the offense is noticeably improved, though it is a work in progress. The defense has taken a step back, but nearly everyone knew even at this time last year that the defense would struggle this year. With disciplinary losses and injuries, I think the defense is ahead of where it should be expected to be. Meanwhile, the offense continues to under-perform. People who want to throw Wally under the bus are just plain ignorant of the game of football - regardless how great their spelling or how many hours they have to spend posting on message boards.
