Firing him now does no good. There is no upside to firing a coach right now.
Yeah, what benefit does firing him now do? Unless a Harbaugh is pressuring you to make the move now so he can come enjoy the current Iowa weather, there is nothing to gain by firing right now.

I have little doubt if up to JP this horrible two-year run is a forgettable, non-issue, and he wants to bring him back.

Didn't JP give McDermott that vote of confidence? And he may have even said something about Chiz's second season before he Chiz-dk'd him. Can't remember.

Remember, JP was in the process of EXTENDING Chizik's contract after his second season (5-19 overall). CPR is currently 5-16 over the last two seasons. Maybe JP should extend his contract too. Or better yet, maybe CPR takes the Auburn job.

Winning is the most important thing, not getting embarrassed on an almost weekly basis is a close second in my book.

Not to mention that there is a very real chance of getting injured playing for a team this bad as we have all witnessed, you're putting your good health on the line when you go out on the field for this team.

I disagree. I would think a recruit (especially JUCO), would have the mindset that they can be a major part of helping a losing team win more. If it were me, my priorities would rank something like:

1) playing time
2) coaches I respect & get along with /system
3) education
4) national exposure
5) location
...
12) current record without me on team

If all they care about is being on a winning team they can stay at their crap junior college or go sit on the bench at Marshall. & some will choose to do just that. I understand we don't rank high in a lot of the above criteria, but playing time is a biggie for a lot of kids.

I would be on board for Mangino taking the reigns and replacing any coaches he see's fit to replace.
I would also be fine going another route. The KU game officially pushed me off the wagon. If Rhoads is given another year, a bowl game is an absolut worst case scenerio for him. I do think people are right that something is brewing.

Wrong, but only if you believe Mangino could be the next guy and he could be made permanent coach now, no interim. Immediately set him loose on the recruiting trail. If you don't see losing three prime weeks of recruiting as a problem, I don't know what to tell you.

But if JP is not going to install Mangino permanently now, then yes, wait until the end of the season. An interim head coach is worse for recruiting than a lame duck head coach.
Why are some of you guys fixating on Mangino? He hasn't "fixed" the offense any more than CPR has "fixed" the defense--which at least suggests that coaching isn't the main problem. Or, did you miss what the offense looked like against OU and KU?

Agree to a point. But it's only been part of a season and not his guys. Not saying he's THE guy. Just need to be fair in what can be expected in 9 games

Anyone following recruiting knew this would happen once his friend decommited. He won't be the last. Should be fun!

That's my fear as well. Signing day isn't until, what, February? Other schools are going to have misses on guys they've pursued, and at the last minute are going to start poaching. Once their classes come into focus they will see a need and will start hitting our recruits up. A guy like Devine Ozigbo is a perfect example. Schools like K-State, Miami, Mississippi St., etc. (all who previously offered him) are probably waiting to see how their classes shape up, and if there is still a need will probably place a call saying "why play for an on-the-verge-of-death program like Iowa State when we are more than willing to take you up here in Top-25 land."

I actually didn't have an issue with a contract extension for Chizik. Remember those bowls we went to in Tempe/NYC/Memphis? Those were on McCarney/Chizik recruits...

In college FB, if you are losing, you aren't going to bowl games, which cuts exposure. Your games are also getting dumped over to the likes FS UpperCentralMidwest+, which further limits your exposure. If you are losing, your practice ends in early December, instead of early January. If you are a good athlete that hopes to get a shot at the pros (the kind that ISU needs to improve), these are not good things. Finally, most good athletes hate losing.

Winning matters to the better recruits. If playing time was the primary driver, 4* and 5* recruits would be swarming to ISU, because they could start immediately. Instead, many go to the elite schools to sit in line and wait their turn.

I think the most important thing about where you are going to play is knowing who the coach is. At least if I was a kid, I think that would matter the most, playing for a coach I felt comfortable with. If you don't know who it is going to be, you are not going to commit.

Kids commit to the coaches, not the University.

The loss of perspective around here has done a lot to dent the myth that Iowa State fans are amongst the more intelligent and educated fan bases in the country.

These coaches and players are still human beings, even if these drizzling ***** of "fans" aren't. They work hard everyday to try to get better. They deserve our respect at least for that much.

It's even more pathetic when you look at the history of dismal support this fanbase has offered this program that has created the very structural problems that have led to this school nearly getting kicked out of the power conferences. Which caused the uncertainty that led to two years of lost recruiting, which happens to be the past two Sr classes.

But by all means please continue to embarrass those of us that show up and actually cheer for these kids.
