Time to give Fred another raise

I'm not worried about something like this right now but down the line, I could see him taking a NBA job. Of course, that's after he's won a couple national titles at ISU.

"If I had to make a hire this year, [Hoiberg] would be one of the first calls I'd make," one NBA general manager told Yahoo! Sports on Sunday. "He is a natural for our league."

"Two GMs who expect to have openings told Yahoo! Sports that they planned to feel out Hoiberg's interest in the NBA once they begin search processes."

Ugh

It won't be only NBA teams. UCLA, Syracuse and any other high profile schools with possible openings will be after him. Need to give him another large raise to keep him here.

NBA Teams Eying Iowa State's Fred Hoiberg

Y! SPORTS

Don't kill the messsenger!

I just saw this story on the front page of Yahoo and I thought I'd pass it along. I know it's a bad time and I don't want Fred going anywhere either, but it seems the suspicions that he would garner interest as an NBA head coach are proving true. Possibly sooner than we thought.

I can't imagine him leaving though, espically after the way this season ended.

Never going to happen!! Hoiberg is here to stay at Iowa State, already is set financially as he was in the NBA for 10 years and few more in an NBA front office!!! Hoiberg wants Iowa State to win a national championship!!!

Get used to it. On the other end, we won't have to worry about colleges coming after him. They will just be shot down and nothing will be heard of it.

My hunch is that he's ours for a long, long time. He knew when he took the job that this wasn't just a routine hiring of a coach. This is perhaps the singular most beloved player in Cyclone basketball history. To walk away from that so easily could severely damage if not outright shatter his legacy. He knows that I don't think he'd walk away from that.

At least, I hope not.

This is not a surprise. He would be a perfect NBA coach. He'll get approached this year. I am sure he got approached the past 2 years. His few college coaching flaws would be less of an issue in the NBA. They'll want him. He is a star in the making.

If UCLA whiffs on their dream candidates (and you know they will) they would be stupid to not look at hoiberg.

I don't think he is going anywhere unless he decides he can't deal with the crap that the college game brings.

"It would need to be a long-term commitment, because he could stay at Iowa State forever," says one assistant GM who stays in contact with Hoiberg.

That says a lot, I think. He's not leaving for awhile.

Fred is not leaving. Everyone who says that is either East Coast or West Coast media that have no understanding of what Iowa State means to Fred. They act like it is just a stepping stone to him because it has been for other coaches. Fred is different. It will take some time for the media to adjust to that. It is good publicity for the program though. Fred can tell recruits that he is coveted by NBA teams.

Way up there
People don't get that a front office job in the NBA is more coveted than a head coaching job. Freddie was already there. If he goes to the NBA it'll be as a GM, until then he's in Ames. NBA head coaches are a revolving door, Fred is too smart and knows the NBA culture too well to get caught up in that.

I think Fred will someday go to the NBA, but I don't think he would do it yet. Don't forget....he witnessed first hand what happened to Floyd in Chicago, although granted Floyd had nothing like Fred's NBA experience, but then Fred does not have Floyd's head coaching experience yet either.

I think Fred will really want to build this ISU program and have some real success with it, plus leave it in really good shape before he leaves for the NBA. Even more success at ISU is not going to hurt his NBA chances.
