85%, no less... you happy now?

And add in the fact they over-hype any weather. It's beyond annoying.

I agree! From now on, no more weather forecasts. Let's abolish all forecast models and just take the weather as it comes. I'd rather be inconveniently surprised than conveniently prepared.

I seriously wish I could have a job that i can be wrong almost 95% of the time, and still keep it.

I didn't realize the storm was over yet.

I could easily be wrong, but can we wait until it actually happens to bury the weather folk?

I don't mean to portray this as an exact science, or that I'm always right, but sheesh. And I appreciate the King of Hype Cantore writing the obit, but there's still a while to go.

But seriously, have things changed or is everybody just spazzing out to simply spazz out. I have no clue. Kinda just waiting.

Why don't people check out what happened/is happening in KC? The storm hit hard...guess it is one of those "tree falls in the woods thing"...if I don't see a foot of snow in my driveway then there wasn't a snowstorm?

Time to pray Ames public schools are closed tomorrow.

Closed schools = instructor stays home with kids = no class for me.

Probably both. The low end of the forecast definitely safer bet right now. Dry air is wrapping in so but the center of the low is still way back in Kansas.

I could be way off here so forgive me if I am but I would compare weather forcasting to handicapping college sports.

All that you can do is look at data to predict the outcome. Certian things are easier to predict than others.

If Alabama football plays the school of the blind it is pretty easy to predict the winner in that game much like with a large system like we have hitting the midwest today it is pretty easy to predict that we will have some measureable snowfall or we have a 100% chance of precipitation.

Predicting the total precipitation is like trying to pick the spread in the Alabama game above. How long will Alabama play their starters? Did Musberger tick off McArron (sp) the QB and will he throw 3 INTS? Will they run up the score or will they play the 3rd stringers by halftime?

All of these questions would be similar (I can imagine) to predicting how a system develops and all of the factors of trying to accurately predict snowfall amounts.

As for the hype thing that is media driven. KCCI and WHO and local stations everywhere benefit when they hype storms like this because it draws viewers to their newscasts. Why wouldnt they mention a significant event whenever they can?

Its not like the weather guy is running around screaming that its the end of the world. Plus this thread has like 20 pages so its obvious that there is interest.

One thing that throws the average person like me for a loop is when people post maps from a model that show 20 inches 6 days out. Most of us average people are too dumb to actually see that these are models and not real weather people making predictions so we get all hot and bothered about a big storm. If we were smart enough to know that the models are not accurate and to wait for someone who knows what the hell they are looking at to interpret them we would be waaaay better off.

Also if you dont like the hype then dont listen or read about it and just let it happen.

/end rant
