And the best little 9 hole golf course in Iowa.

Don't forget Hempstead, across the road from Fillmore.

I knew the greenskeeper there for a while (doubt he's still doing it).

That course is immaculate.

There is that sign on the barn that says Hempstead pop .24 I always thought there was a brand of pop called Hempstead and it sold for 24 cents.

As said before, almost every town in Southwest Iowa can be added to this list:

Irwin
Fiscus
Botna
Kirkman
Defiance
Earling
Aspinwall
Westphalia
Buck Grove
Beebeetown
Panama
Portsmouth
Red Line
Ross
Gray
Ricketts
Pisgah
Wiota

These are just the few I can think of without looking at a map but I know there are a lot more...

I have family thats lives right up the raid from Pittsburg Iowa down in SE Iowa (which is right down the road from Lebanon. Those 2 towns probably equal 50 people, 80% of which are Amish.

Kind of off topic but there is a town in Benton County called Keystone, Iowa. I think it's a town of about 600. Anyway, Keystone almost became home to Notre Dame. When Notre Dame was built a grant was given by a farmer to build the college, unfortunately the grant in South Bend was bigger. Their is still a Catholic cemetery a half mile east of town where the college was supposed to be.

Vandalia...its just east of Runnells. A church, an old schoolhouse not used since the 50's (legend has it there is still an apple on the desk) and about 6 houses, many of them are solely inhabited by cats.

Schley - At one point it had two bars, a cheese factory and few houses.

i forgot about Schley, i know one bar is still going, maybe the second also.

there is also Jericho is just north of new hampton (1 bar), Saude (2 or 3 houses) and Little Turkey (1 bar that i know of) just north of Lawler.

I'm surprised nobody has mentioned Gunder in NE Iowa. Not even technically a town anymore. Since it's no longer incorporated it's categorized as a "populated place". But you can still order the one pound Gunderburger at the Irish Shanti.

People are including towns that have 1-A school districts! Don't know what small town Iowa is I guess...

How about Otranto, Iowa? One business, a church and about 10 homes---located 3 miles north and east of Carpenter and 3 miles south and west of Mona.

I grew up in Southern Otranto Proper---as I call it.

Speaking of Meyer, McIntire and Riceville--heck let's throw in Stacyville and New Haven too---was just went that way a couple Saturday evenings ago for a little road trip.

McIntire will always have a soft spot in my heart and my friends'---spent a few evenings back in the day at the Redman Inn---if you had money, you could drink and they were open on Thanksgiving Day night. How can you beat that?

Otranto and Mona are great inclusions. I've participated in some drunken misadventures in both. Really, about any town in Mitchell County that isn't Osage or St. Ansgar belongs in this thread.

If you're drinking in McIntire, and really want that local flavor you gotta shoot for the Pit Stop. The Redman is a good time, but they've had some owner turnover over the years. Outside of a 1.5 year hiatus, the Pit Stop has had the same owner, and she's behind the bar almost every night. Gotta respect that.

The night before Thanksgiving, and Thanksgiving Day night are the biggest nights of the year there.

Schley's down to one bar these days. I think it still gets decent business, but was for sale when I drove through the other day. I have coworkers that will go down for beers pretty regularly.

What's cool about one of the bars, is that its also a country hardware store. They would have motor belts hanging above the beer taps, for sale. Stop in for a cold, grab a new alternator belt, call it a day.

Ortonville - Just west of Waukee on hwy 6. Two houses and a couple of small manufacturers.

Daleville - Somewhere by Stuart. All that is left is the old post office. Got lost on the country roads and found it one time.

My post earlier got buried about this too. If the town name appears in a school's name, its not nearly as small as a lot of place mentioned here.
