Not sure how many will remember this but I remember '73.

IT'S NOT THE CRIME - IT'S THE COVER-UP.

Cripes - when will people realize this? If somebody does something criminally wrong (including yourself even if you are Martha Stewart) just give up the goods and pay a fine instead of doing prison time.

Is there something innately wrong with the truth that will make you suffer even more severe punishment? Just tell the truth.

Cripes, it's not that difficult. Maybe I'm just a Midwestern hick that was taught to tell the truth and deal with the consequences, but it makes life a lot more simple.

With Joe Pa just sitting back after he reported it, he should resign now.

This, 100%.

He had a first-hand account of the rape of a child in his program and all he did was tell his AD. Nine years later it explodes and his answer is,"I did what I was supposed to do." Unacceptable.

Not only do I believe he should resign, he should be facing charges.

ESPN just said that the AD and VP are going down for lying to a grand jury and withholding information.

Didn't the president of the university come out and vocally support both of them, claiming they were innocent of all charges and that the university stood behind them?

He needs to be done as far as I'm concerned. Sad to say but I think Paterno needs to "retire" as well. Sad because it's a horrible way to for him to go out, not because he deserves to keep his job after this.

I don't think Patirno should be fired, unless I'm missing something. He reported what he knew to his boss, and the university police(law authorities for campus). The university police are real police so saying he didn't report it to authorities is wrong.

I don't know this part happened, but I can only assume. Patirno calls up the police, and nothing comes from it. He would just assume that the accusations were not substantial, and got on with his life. Or maybe he called his buddy after that and got a statement such as "It was just lies, I had the kid there working out and he needed to take a shower. I wasn't in there with him" or something like that.

Remember, Jo Pa didn't see anything happen, he was just told third person what was seen. He also reported the incident.

I think they have the pervert now, and the people that were covering it up. I don't think Jo Pa is a part of that.

Here's my issue with Paterno. According to the court documents, he was told essentially the same thing by the GA as were the AD and president. He also gave essentially the same grand jury testimony it appears. The AD and president are being indicted for perjury, Paterno is not.

Also, IF he was told specifics, and nothing came from it, then he had some sort of obligation to do SOME follow up. YOu're told one of your assistants has anally raped a 10 year old in your football facilities, and you think you only obligation is to pass it along to the AD? That's absurd.

I'm following the Penn AG's press conference via Twitter and it sounds like while Paterno is clear legally, the AG is killing him.

When the Attorney General comes out and plainly says that the actions (ie. lack of action) by Penn State caused multiple more children to be sexually abused....that isn't going to go over well. I think EVERYONE who had a hand in this should be fired.

This scandal will make the Baylor mess look like the OSU tattoo scandal.

I hate to drag Iowa into every conversation, but this reminds me of how they tried to handle the rape of one of their female student-athletes (by two football players) internally rather than calling the police right away. Two high-level University of Iowa administators lost their jobs too, but the football coaches and the AD skated.

Unless I am missing something, I have not heard that Paterno reported this issue to the university police. The only version I've heard is he told his boss. Someone set me straight if he did in fact go to the police because that would chance my stance on his involvement in the cover-up.

That's how I understand it as well from reading the report linked in here earlier.

I just listened to part of the press conference. The DA stated specifically, none of those involved went to the police or any child protective agency and their inaction allowed a predator to continue abusing children.

Joe Pa, if he has any dignity at all, should step down immediately.

I thought I read that somewhere. I re read through the document posted here and didn't see that he reported to police. Sorry for any confusion.
