Re: Predictions

I know in the past we havent been good on the road but is part of that the previous coaching staff? There is def. some losses on that schedule but i think there is winnable games. I hope that the team doesnt colapse after that rugged middle strech which might be one of the toughest 4 game stretches of any team in the country.

Re: Predictions

Our track record on the road is pretty freakin' bad. I think our best chance at a road win in conference is at KU...but they put a beat down of all beat downs on us at home last year so I don't even think that is realistic.

Do we have a fighting chance in our road games? Sure. Am I confident we will win one? No.

Well said. I recall the '05 Mizzu game all too well. Horrible start, spotted them 14 points. Then a great comeback. Only to let the lead slip away late and a loss in OT (This is the song that never ends and it goes on and on my friends...).

KU just embarrassed us last year. I mean bad. One of my most embarrassing moments at Jack Trice.

Re: Predictions

I want to think that some of this had to do with the fact that we only opened up 1/3 of the field on passing plays and had the worst and most predictable play calling in the history of the world

That game makes me sick to my stomach just thinking about it. Letting the lead slip away in regulation was bad enough (cough Culbertson cough) but to have first and goal from the 4 yard line AND to throw a jump ball on 3rd and goal was awful...just awful.

KU just embarrassed us last year. I mean bad. One of my most embarrassing moments at Jack Trice.

I was trying to think of a worse loss post-2000 and I can't think of one this bad.

Some? Of course.

Yet if you're blaming most or all of it on the staff, you and I were watching two different teams on Saturdays last fall.

Depth may be one of our biggest issues this fall, one that most of us keep overlooking, including myself. We (myself included) keep talking about how we'll live or die by how we play in the trenches and this is very true. Yet look what happened to us last season when we had some injuries. Things got a whole lot worse for us and they were bad to begin with.

Lets say Bowen goes down this year. Rut-roh. How about Meyer? While Arnaud sure looks the part, he is still just a freshman with zero collegiate experience. We lose Blythe again like we did last season and our receiving corps loses a huge punch. How about an injury or two in the secondary like last year. Our starters are going to struggle, imagine what the guys behind them will be like in a Big 12 game.

I hate to sound like the gloom and doom guy but today it's really hitting me. In nearly every position, we have little to no depth. Ouch.

Re: Predictions

Am I the only one who thinks Iowa will be better this year than last? I think Drew Tate killed Iowa all year and most of his team hated him. I think we keep it close but wear down in the end in that game.

I think we win the first 2 and one more after that for a 3 win season. We don't have the lines to get it done in Gene's first year.

Probably one of the only folks outside Iowa City that thinks that.

Will their record be better? Well, it had better be, their schedule gets softer! Yet they still play 4 Big 10 teams that beat them last year. And, I don't know of too many positions where you can say, "Yeah, they got better there".

Hate Tate as much as you want, Jake C. is certainly not Drew Tate. At least not yet anyways.

Re: Predictions

Well after 4 pages of boring predictable predictions, I've decided to come out with some bold predictions. Realistic? We'll see...

Kent State - W
In Gene Chizik's opening game at Jack Trice stadium, the Cyclones have a somewhat comfortable opening night winning by 2 touchdowns. The team plays a fairly conservative offense trying to save itself from completely giving away the new playbook to the competition.

Northern Iowa - W
No worries this year. A somewhat convincing win from a team that is showing some signs of fire.

Iowa - W
The playbook opens up on a national stage as the whole state as well as other VS. viewers watch on. A close game through 3.5 quarters until ISU pulls away late.

at Toledo - W
A Toldeo team that only seemed to play well against us last year provides another tough match up on the road, but the defense comes together after 3 games and wins one for the Cyclones.

at Nebraska - L
Order continues to be restored in the Big 12 North for the second season in a row. Gene takes his first loss in a game that appears gone shortly after halftime.

at Texas Tech - L
A hard fought road loss. Doomsdayers start showing up around the message boards.

Texas - W
Oh come on people! You all picked both of the big home games as losses! Can't you just have fun with this message board stuff? This has fate written all over it. The Gene Machine faces the team that he helped take to the national title. A win for the ages in Ames. Family weekend turns into riot weekend.

Oklahoma - L
After thinking we are the next Big 12 champions, we get a dose of reality. Oklahoma comes in and wins by 17.

at Missouri - W
LOL. They'll be ticked from the phantom holding call, but that will be about it. Telephone Trophy stays in Ames.

Kansas State - W
Believe it or not, the second best win of the year other than beating Texas. A returning to greatness Kansas State takes a step back in Ames.

Colorado - W
This team will never play the same in Ames after what happened in 2005. Cyclone Warning Issued. Buffalo's hearded.

at Kansas - W
Revenge for the past. This is not a good team no matter how many points they scored against us in Ames last year.

9-3 Baby! Ok, so my predictions are not based on lineups, matchups, or anything technical just hope. If I was a paid sports writer, I'd write something more predictable and uninteresting.

Re: Predictions

Rogue52 I agree with you; if the cyclones biggest fanatics don't even think they can win, who does?

Re: Predictions

first of all why did JP honor the road game at Toledo to give ISU 3 straight road games??? I think this should be the last time ISU plays a road game against a non-BCS school.

ISU pulls off some magic 7-5 and one big upset gets them into the Alamo bowl.

Wanting them to win and thinking they will win are 2 totally different things.

How do we go 9-3 with our schedule after a 4-8 season last year? Don't forget, we lost our D-Line and stellar O-line...

Re: Predictions

I'm definitley not booking on them going 9-3 and it's probably not possible, but I just think we should be a little bit more optomistic. I honestly think Brett Meyer has just as good an offense as he did his sophmore year if not better (minus the o-line), our defense has the potential with the incoming recruits and bowen to be good enough to win games if our offense is scoring points, I don't see why we would lose to the K-States, and Colorados of the world. At least imply that you expect them to make it to a bowl game and return to respectablility,if not this year in the next few years.

Re: Predictions

I'll chime in again this year. I predicted a 5-7 year for the Clones last year and got blasted by you guys. (This is an ISU fan site, so I understand the hostility).

This year I see a 3-9 season. I don't see you winning a big XII game. ISUFan22 has it right, ISU doesn't have any depth at any position on the entire team. Players WILL get hurt and dinged up throughout the season, and quality depth is impairative.

I wouldn't put too much hope into the JUCOs arriving this summer. I have seen Nebraska use many, many JUCOs (very highly regarded JUCOs) the last two seasons, and even the best of them haven't made much of an impact until mid to late season. One half of them won't make any impact at all. The spring OL juco's have a chance to make an impact, but I would only count on one of them being a truly solid contributor. JUCO OL recruiting is very difficult.

Chizek is an unknown quantity as a head coach. He has done a great job at Auburn and Texas, but thats with Auburn and Texas talent, which you don't have. Even last year at Texas, Chizek's secondary allowed the most passing yards in school history.

Congrats on your season ticket sales and good luck this year!

Thanks for allowing us to put our collective foot in our mouths. We were wrong, you were right, yadda yadda. :sad9cd:

However, I think the defense and offense will be slightly better from last year, and, even though your prediction may be the most pessimistic and "realistic" so far, I still can't buy into it. A winless Big 12 season? Surely there's the opportunity there to beat KSU and CU at home.

Oh yeah, and if you were the NU fan last year saying that you thought that NU's offense would outperform ISU's offense, I'm deeply, deeply sorry. I seem to remember jumping on you with stats and chasing you out the door. :rofl8yi:
