I bought a DVD recorder that also can pick up digital channels (QAM Tuner) and it has an HDMI output. My TV can do 720p and 1080i, but doesn't have an HDMI slot. I bought a Phillips HDMI to DVI converter that says it will not loose any quality. After comparing the HD and SD broadcasts I cannot distinguish much of a difference except the HD one has more colors and has a "little bit" better resolution. (Usually I can distinguish HD from SD very easily on this TV) What is my problem?

If you are pulling mediacom HD channels, then it's just crappy mediacom QAM signals in my opinion. I do the same as you and I dont see much difference either.

Is it possible you're not grabbing the HD channels, youre just grabbing the digital simulcast channels (that you can also get on qam)?

DVD Recorders can't record more than 480p. Is it possible you are getting the original digital signal downscaled to 480p (and then maybe upscaled back to 720p or 1080i)?

That may be possible, but how would I fix it?
