Run-Pass (Im)Balance

I know this is well-covered ground, but just to put some stats on it:

upload_2019-10-31_15-17-10.png

The numbers bear out that when they get cute and throw it around too much, bad things happen. Was tempted to look at last year too, maybe someone else has the time. Mea culpa if any of the stats are wrong, quickly copied from ESPN.

I know correlation isn't causation, but the "playing from behind and had to throw" argument is trash; 3 losses by total of 10 points, and never down by more than 11 points (I think) which was in the 1st half so plenty of time.

Not sure why it happens, hopefully the coaches will figure it out.

WBB Pre-season polling published

AP and Coaches out yesterday. ISU #24 in coaches. #27 in AP. Little surprised at that. Not surprised to be receiving votes but thought we would be down the line a bit more. Baylor and Texas are the only Big 12 teams ranked in both polls. West Virginia getting enough ORV to almost crack the Top 25.

Was also a little surprised to Gophers ranked in AP. They do like Whalen though.

Iowa St.

Steve Prohm has taken Iowa State to the NCAAs in three of his previous four seasons in Ames, earning a No. 4, 5 and 6 seed. I'm a bit higher on the Clones this season than most, but don't expect them to get into the Big Dance with such a good seed. There are a lot of talented point guards across college basketball, but few will have as much responsibility or direct causation for their team's success like Tyrese Haliburton, whose sophomore-season breakout we should all see coming from 20 miles away.

NFL: ***Official Week Nine Thread***

Niners @ Cardinals tonight. I expect SF to handle them pretty easily. The 49ers might be legit but their schedule gets considerably tougher the rest of the way, including two games against the Seahawks.

Best of the weekend:

MIN @ KC - I like KC if Mahomes is a go. Another measuring stick game for Kirk Cousins.

CHI @ PHI - Loser is going to have a really difficult time getting back into the playoff race. Not an elimination game, but not far off.

NE @ BAL - First significant test for the Pats. We'll see just how good that defense really is.

Crown a New Loser - Coaches

I got to thinking, with our unanimous most hated coach off to Houston, who does Cyclone Fanatic hate the most. Post your Big 12 coach rankings from love to hate below:

1.) Matt Campbell - Pretty sure I love this man more than some of my own family members. What he stands for as a man makes him the best representative this University could ask for. Not to mention what he has done for my favorite sports child (Iowa State football).

2.) Mike Gundy - The mullet is unique and I love his honesty.

3.) Lincoln Riley - He finally rid the conference of a hated hawk. Seems like a genuine guy and I have a weird soft spot for OU with big game Bob gone.

4.) Gary Patterson - Seems to hold his players accountable and always gives us credit when we beat them.

5.) Les Miles - Quirky guy that is always good for a laugh or two.

6.) Chris Klieman - Born winner and its proven with his success at NDSU.

7.) Matt Wells - I've heard great things about him. Seems to be a class act.

8.) Neal Brown - Don't know much about him, which already makes him better than my bottom two.

9.) Matt Rhule - Whiny little ***** boy who put our players in danger by having the conference make us take down our tents. Not to mention the dirty **** his players pulled in Ames last year. Seems like a slimeball the way he flirts with NFL teams every chance he gets. Move on and let Rapelor fall to the bottom of the conference again, where they belong.

10.) Tom Herman - Dude is a real life cuck/swinger, was porking "recruiting girls", seems to enjoy bashing Ames and Iowa State any chance he gets, and is an overall douche. Horns down loser.

Deadspin in a tailspin

I know there's a few other Deadspin readers on this site. If you don't know the backstory here's a link to catch up on the specifics of what's happening.

Long story short, it looks like the website is kaput. Staffers are resigning en masse, including Drew Magary. Magary is one of my favorite sports bloggers and I'll be curious to see where he lands. His weekly mailbag and NFL Jambaroo column are must reads for me.

Twister Sister Summary...a few observations

A few quick notes...

This was an exhibition game so it was an opportunity to see lots of different combinations on the floor. We saw lots of things… Good, bad, etc. there definitely will be film to look at for growth by all the players.

Nez - Just like last year she has a tendency to foul too much. She loses her feet and thus her position. This got her pulled from the game early. She did come back late and made some really good hustle plays. That’s one thing you can always expect from her is she will go 100%.

Madison - she is rocksolid. A great defender, steals the ball on a regular basis, and can hit her shots. She also rebounds like a fiend.

Rae - started at the point guard position tonight. One of her assets is she is strong and can hang onto the ball. Her assists aren’t quite as crisp as some of the other guards, but she will be a solid contributor at this position.

Nia - made too many mistakes. Got herself into some tough situations without the means to get out. she is quick, but her size is still a limiting factor in her strength and scoring.

Jade - this is going to start out as a love/hate relationship. She is lightning quick. Literally ran past players tonight. This makes her effective on defense. She can turn the ball over and she can make some stupid mistakes. Lots of potential to be a solid contributor. Did I say she was fast? She earned every minute of playing time.

AD - she has matured and she isn’t making the mistakes we saw in earlier years. Sweet shot and hustle, hustle, hustle. If she settles into a groove look out.

Joens- you can see that she has matured and looks stronger than last year. Good scoring touch as would be expected and is making solid plays inside and out. She reminds me of the heir apparent to Bridget.

Morgan - when she first came in I wasn’t impressed. She seemed slow afoot and wasn’t handling the ball well. she settled in I liked more and more of what I saw. She rebounded strong and was not afraid to take it to the hoop. Lots of potential here that needs developing.

Maggie EM - I have to say upfront that she looks like a little girl compared to everyone else. But she is the farthest thing from it. She lit up the hoop making six out of nine shots grabbing a bunch of rebounds and looking solid in her debut game. looks like a solid asset coming off the bench for this team.

Some of the other young players got in but didn’t really show much. No surprise there. As with many a first game there were spurts of action, followed by mistakes, followed by inactivity. Obviously the team had better size and better talent than the opponent and the outcome was exactly what you would expect it to be. too many turnovers (20) and a few too many misses at the line (you know me.I like perfection, but in the low - mid 80% range would be nice).

One more tune up in a game that counts against Southern next week. Then things get serious with a road trip against a very good and tough Drake team in Des Moines.

Bridget Carleton playing in Australia Update

Since our WBB Cyclones are tipping off tonight I did a check and saw the Townsville Fire has started their season in the Women's National Basketball League in Australia. Bridget is averaging 11.5 PPG and 5 REB through 5 games.

Julie Vanloo of Belgium is on the team Remember us attempting to recruit her? Never worked out for us or her, thanks to the NCAA. Australian Abby Bishop, who spent some time with the Seattle Storm, is another name I recognize.
