NET/KenPom/BPI/Sagarin vs Bracketologists

Small sample of ISU and Iowa but wanted to compare the big rankings like NET/KP/BPI/Sagarin against where the supposed 'big' Bracketologists have Iowa State and Iowa. As I suspected, Jerry Palm is off his ******* rocker.

Iowa State:
  • NET: 13 (4 seed)
  • KenPom: 12 (3 seed)
  • BPI: 13 (4 seed)
  • Sagarin: 12 (3 seed)
    • Average: 12.5 or last 3 seed or first 4 seed
  • Bracketology:
    • Lunardi: 4 seed
    • Palm: 5 seed (but listed as #20 team so one spot away from 6 seed)
    • USAToday: 4 seed
Can't complain with ESPN or USAToday on 4 seed for ISU at all. But we are an average of the 12th team in the major ranking sites and Palm has us a full 8 spots or basically two full seeds lines below those averages. Makes absolutely zero sense.

Iowa:

  • NET: 28 (7 seed)
  • KenPom: 25 (7 seed)
  • BPI: 30 (8 seed)
  • Sagarin: 31 (8 seed)
    • Average: 28.5 or 8 seed line
  • Bracketology:
    • Lunardi: 6 seed
    • Palm: 4 seed (but listed as #15 team)
    • USAToday: 6 seed
Despite an average of around 28th in the major rankings, bracketologists have Iowa hovering around the 6 seed line and I think that's fair at this point despite the rankings saying they should be an 8 seed. But Palm, yet again is laughable. Iowa's average ranking is 28th, but he has them THREE full seeds lines above that average at a 4 seed.

WrestleStat Rankings - Week 16 2018-2019

Rankings have been updated, but I need to point out some changes that occurred last night.

1) Wrestlers records have been updated to reflect only Division I opponents. This was done to fall in line with the same criteria as the NCAA's RPI rankings use for the 17 match minimum.
2) Wrestlers profile pages have been updated to display both the [Division I] record, as well as the wrestlers overall record. This will show up in the Season Summaries section. The overall record will be in parenthesis. Check out Chance Marsteller's profile for an example: https://www.wrestlestat.com/wrestler/47805/marsteller-chance/profile
3) Also, on a wrestlers profile page is now the RPI. This is the last column in the Season Summaries section. Right now it's displaying the actual RPI value, but that may change or get removed since it doesn't provide much context relative to other wrestlers. Anyway, since the official RPI is based on the 17 match minimum, not everyone will have an RPI. In order to get a guage about where, approximately, a wrestlers will fall once they reach that 17 match minimum, there's a 2nd RPI value in parenthesis. This RPI is based on a 5 match minimum. For example, Stevan Micic at 133 (ranked #1) has only had 13 matches so far this year, therefore does not have an official RPI (so it shows NA), but it is showing the unofficial RPI so you can get an approximate idea of where he will land once reaching that 17 match minimum.
4) Lastly, since we're on the subject of the RPI, I went ahead and added an RPI rankings page. This page is initially sorted by the UNOFFICIAL RPI (smaller number at the far-left), but will display in bigger font the official RPI. Again, this is to give an idea where a wrestler will slot-in once they reach the 17 match minimum.

Keep in mind, I'm not 100% sure on the criteria of the RPI calculations that the NCAA uses, but I'll continue to tweak once I find out all of the details. As of right now, it's calculated like this: (25% Wrestlers Win %) + (50% Opponents Win %) + (25% Opponents Opponents Win %)

Now, for the rankings...I've wrote too much already, so here they are:

ISU, the Big XII and the next round of realignment

It won't be another half-decade until the conference carousel resumes. While I think Iowa State won't wind up relegated to a second-tier league as some previously feared, it's in ISU's best interests to keep the Big XII as strong as possible, no matter what other members are lured elsewhere.

The Big Ten -- unable to draw from the ACC because of its grant of rights through 2036 -- probably will seek two new members from the Big XII. While it'd be nice to see the U of I stand up for Ames as a B1G candidate, it's not gonna happen; the likely targets? Kansas, Oklahoma and Texas. The first two are the most likely to join, given the Longhorns' not being able to play well with others (and that ESPN-funded network).

Who replaces KU and OU? The candidates will probably come from the American. From most likely to least, candidates are:

Cincinnati
Memphis
Houston
Central Florida
South Florida
Connecticut
Temple
Southern Methodist
Tulane
East Carolina
Tulsa

I see only two selected, with Cincinnati a good partner for WVU and Memphis a basketball power with decent football. I don't see UT taking in a "directional" school, regardless of its football prowess (sorry, UCF and USF).

Your thoughts?.

UNI dual predictions

Pumped for the dual on thursday. Should be some really good matches, we are good at a lot of the same weights.

125- Mackall dec Schwarm ISU 3-0

Toss up match. Schwarm is boom or bust. Mackall has been solid all year, but hasn't been able to beat top tier guys. I will take Mackall due to consistency.

133- Gomez fall skudlardzyk ISU 9-0

Not much to say, we are much better here. It is important we get bonus points.

141- Alber dec Parker ISU 9-3

Both hard nosed wrestlers. Both beat Kaid Brock and Dom Demas in close matches on grit and gas tank. I'll give Alber the edge in West Gym.

149- Thomsen dec Degen ISU 9-6

Thomsen hasn't looked as good this year as he has the past couple of years, so I am hopeful. I still don't think its a great matchup for Degen, Thomsen is so solid I don't think he will be able to force him into scramble positions.

157- Straw dec Moore ISU 12-6

On paper Straw is the favorite but I am concerned about this match considering it is in West Gym. Moore and Straw have a couple of common opponents, Justin Thomas and Wyatt Sheets. Straw beat Sheets 3-2 while Moore lost 4-2. Both lost to Thomas in close matches.

165- Steiert maj Schumacher ISU 12-10

Need to avoid bonus. Schumacher has done a great job as a true freshman, he's going to need to keep fighting hard here.

174- Lujan dec Coleman 13-12 UNI

Coleman had a dandy of a match with Lujan at Cyclone open earlier this year. It would be huge if he can reverse the result against Lujan this time around. He has narrowed the gap every time they've wrestled, but I'm not picking the upset.

184- Foster maj Colbray 17-12 UNI

Foster dominated Colbray by TF at harold nichols earlier this year. Colbray has continued to wrestle better, I don't think Foster is that much better than him. I'll go Foster by major.

197- Miklus dec Gordon 17-15 UNI

Miklus the big favorite. This is an opportunity for bonus points, which Miklus hasn't had a ton of this year. Going Willie by dec.

Hwt- Gremmel dec Isley 18-17 ISU

I know they've wrestled several times with both guys coming out on top. Maybe I'm being a homer here but Gremmel appears to have turned a corner this season. I'm taking him by dec.

Things could go a lot of ways with close matches at 125, 141, 149, 157, 174 and Hwt. With that many close matches, I generally wouldn't like our chances of going into west gym and beating UNI. This team held up well in Stillwater and Iowa City, both hostile environments. This is the best team UNI has had in awhile. I will just be happy if ISU comes back with a W. I think that they will.

Carleton claims another Big 12 POW

Iowa State’s Bridget Carleton was named Big 12 Women’s Basketball Player of the Week for the fourth time this season, while West Virginia’s Madisen Smith was tabbed Freshman of the Week for the third time.

Carleton averaged 29.0 points, 8.5 rebounds, 3.0 assists and3.0 steals, as the Cyclones went 1-1 last week. The senior scored 34 points and corralled 10 rebounds at TCU, while adding 24 points and seven rebounds in the triumph over Oklahoma State. The weekly award is the 10th all-time in her career.
