On That Note - Strings Attached

It's Tuesday night, so here we go with another On That Note. As we say every week, OTN is a music themed series hosted alternately by @cyclones500, @CycloneRulzzz and me.

Last week's OTN was "Do You Wanna Dance." It can be found here:

https://cyclonefanatic.com/forum/threads/on-that-note-do-you-wanna-dance.256252/

This week we're continuing our series on musical instrument families - with stringed instruments. But we're going to have to lay down a few guidelines or this could end up being something too unwieldy.
  1. No, guitars aren't going to be the thing to qualify a song. Too too many, too too easy. String bass? Same deal; no. Obviously a song can HAVE those but they alone don't qualify it for inclusion here.
  2. Symphony or classic performances are excluded.
  3. Musical groups that routinely include classical string sections such as ELO are to be avoided.
  4. Country or Blue grass acts with group members who normally play banjo or fiddle are out.
So in short, we're looking for songs by pop groups who have non-guitar/bass string performances incorporated into a song or performance.

Too complex - yes. Too difficult to find examples? I don't think so.

My First 5:

A West Texas Rocker, Buddy Holly got pretty sophisticated with this one.

One of the first ones many people will think of is Paul's ballad from 1965. So only 18 months after they were dismissed as novelty flavor-of-the-day they come out with this.

And the Beatles, particularly George, were instrumental (pun intended) to incorporating Indian instruments into Western music - particularly the Sitar. Many mid/late 60's songs incorporated the instrument including the Rolling Stones on this major hit.

One of the most iconic songs of the 1970s from one of the most iconic acts of the decade. Banjo is very prominent in this one!

Another early 70's hit featured a not-often-used in Rock and Roll stringed instrument. In fact, it's a part of the song title.

Would you leave a job you like for more money?

I’m currently at a company I really like and a job that I enjoy for the most part. It’s a smaller company and the role provides a few minor headaches, but for the most part is a good gig. The pay is average for the industry. The job does have great benefits and unlimited PTO.

I recently came across a somewhat similar role for a large company that I feel I would have a decent chance at landing. The pay is almost double what I make now.

I’m stuck on the old phrase “money isn’t everything”, but also doubling my income would allow a lot of extra fun. Would you ever leave a job you like strictly for more money?

PS4 - RPG Recommendations

For the gamers on here... looking for an RPG to sink my teeth into on PS4. Used to be very into fantasy RPG/MMORPG's on PC like Runscape, Guild Wars, Neverwinter Nights, etc. but haven't really gotten into one in years. I'm certainly a the grinder/completionist type in these games... at this stage, leaning towards something like Diablo III, The Witcher III, etc.

Any suggestions out there? What are your favorites?

Old World (Civ-like 4x game)

Haven't been opted into the gaming & hobbies forum, so thought I would place this here.

Just stumbled across the Old World video game (Epic game store). The lead designer made Civilization IV. It's in early access, but the game is mostly complete (they just need to add a bunch more events, and maybe some other details and things).

Imagine Civilization mixed with Crusader Kings.

This game really brings some interesting new ideas to the formula.
  • Your ruler is mortal (each turn is a year). When you're gone, your chosen heir will rule, and you'll carry on with them (based loosely on how you've groomed them).
  • Events happen every year (sometimes many). These events shape your relations with the noble families you rule over, as well as relations with foreign powers.
  • Moving your units and doing things with them all revolve around orders. You get a set number of orders based on your legitimacy score, and once you use them up, your turn is done (so you have to plan well).
  • Technology is card based, with a technology tree like Civilization games, but the cards are somewhat random, some of your path is left up to chance (more realistic IMO).
  • Diplomacy is more involved (mainly through your decisions from events that happen), but it feels much more real than Civ.
  • Scouts are much more useful. Along with revealing more of the map, they can find special places that trigger helpful events, harvest items, and since the map reverts to last known status, you need to use them to actually scout the enemy and what they're up to.
  • The AI is very competent.
  • Overall, with the succession of rulers, random events and everything else, each game plays out a bit differently.
I've been waiting for Humankind, but this should keep me plenty busy until then. I'm already more into than I ever got into Civ VI

Seeking feedback: Interest in CF gaming/eSports leagues?

Hey guys ... quick question for you in which I'm seeking some feedback.

I've been meeting with our developer about refreshing the site and upgrading our forum here over the next few months.

One of the options that he has brought to me is the "gamification" of our forum. Basically, there is a lot of really cool new technology out there that could bring more games, leagues, and eSports right here to our community through the forum software and also your own gaming systems.

This is out of my line of expertise so I thought I would throw it out to our forum users to gauge an appetite for it.

Let me know what you think. Thanks!

Installing a new hard drive

Looking for some advice. I purchased a new SSD for my laptop and was wondering how best to set it up. I know cloning is the easiest, but I've read that doing a clean install of windows and moving backups of files over will give you the best performance. My laptop is getting fairly old and there is definitely some bloatware I would like to get rid of. If I am installing Windows 10 will it pretty much install itself including drivers if I use a recovery file? Does anybody know of a good faq they would recommend for this? I've looked at a few but someone out there may know of better ones than I've seen.

Cross-country move cost?

We're moving to CoSprings shortly so we get to do a move! Anyone do a cross-country move recently using a professional moving company? I don't want to call to get estimates yet, but curious what others experiences have been?

I HAD looked at Pods but good GOD they ask a lot of money! As a comparison, we're driving over a 12' van with unlimited miles for 6 days over the long weekend and Budget is only charging $300...

I won't (can't) move on our own - lazy, old and have too many artificial parts and despite the fact we're taking a load over on our own already. We have a basic 2-3 room home, no packing needed and we're driving our own cars but I've been out of this market for decades...

Anywho - curious about others' recent experiences...

Toodles.

Academic Calendar for Fall Semester

I've seen 4 schools (Notre Dame, South Carolina, Creighton, & Marquette) announce a schedule where they will start earlier than normal in August, take no Fall Break, and the Semester will then end around Thanksgiving. Wonder if ISU will do something similar?

***The Ranch - Mafia***

The Ranch Mafia

Beau Bennett has always believed in the ranch remaining in the family, as did his father and his father’s father. Despite the help of his two sons and nephew, the Iron River Ranch has hit tough financial times. Due to the hardships, Beau’s been forced to sell the farm to Neumann’s Hill, a big corporation that goes against Beau’s morals as a rancher. Only a miracle can keep the Iron River Ranch in the Bennett family. Can the innocents defeat Neumann’s Hill and give Beau his ranch back?

Mafia - Neumann’s Hill

Gets one night kill each night. Additionally...

Lisa Neumann - Owner of Neumann’s Hill. Lisa can recruit 3 regular innocents to become mafia. One per night. Does not have to recruit each day. Recruiting a Bennett family member will instantly kill Lisa Neumann. Once dead, no more recruiting.

Neumann’s Lawyers - Have the ability to investigate anyone in the game each night. This investigation will result in either “Bennett” or “Regular Innocent.” However, if their investigation shows up as a “Bennett,” they will not be able to kill this person, ever, at night. Once Lisa is dead, no more investigating. No more investigating once all lawyers are dead.

Additionally, if Lisa dies before all lawyers are dead, they will receive an instant kill. If Lisa dies of the trich (see below) lawyers will have two instant kills.

Neumann’s Ranch Hands - The (up to 3) regular innocents who become mafia.

The Special Innocents - Bennetts

Beau Bennett - Jack of All Trades. Can kill at night, investigate at night, or save at night. Can not do the same thing twice in a row, but can kill, investigate, kill.

Maggie Bennett - Beau’s first wife - Doctor. Gets one save each night.

Colt Bennett - Beau’s youngest son. Investigator. Gets one investigation each night.

Rooster Bennett - Upon death, receives one instakill to use within 24 hours after death is announced. Instakill is lost if they ghost post before turning in instakill.

Other Bennetts with non-powers but would still kill Lisa upon recruitment

Joanne (Beau’s second wife)
Luke Matthews (Beau’s nephew)
Abby Bennett (Colt’s wife)
Peyton Bennett (Colt’s daughter)

All other players are regular innocents. Regular innocents will not know their character until their death.

The Trich

This scary STD amongst the cattle has been spread across many cattle in Southwest Colorado. Mafia will start with the Trich day 1 and pass it at night to an innocent. If the innocent with the trich is able to pass it back to someone in mafia, that mafia member will die immediately. N2, the innocent with the trich will pass the trich to another player. The innocents have N2, N3, N4, and N5 to pass it back to mafia. If it hits mafia any of those nights, that mafia member dies and the Trich disappears. If, by the end of N5, the trich does not hit mafia, the trich disappears and the mafia gains an additional instakill (still can not kill a Bennett they had already investigated)

I will not let anyone know who has had the trich/passed the trich. I will only let the person know that they have it. Additionally, if the person who has it does not say who they want to pass it to by the start of the next day (received it N1, don’t let me know who to pass it to by the end of N2) the trich disappears. Mafia doesn’t gain an instakill, but regular innocents lose chance to hit mafia.
