Bizarre Car Battery Issue - Input Wanted

Bizarre Car Battery Issue - Input Wanted

Yesterday, I drove a short distance from my house to a gas station. Went in, paid, came back out, car would not start. There was no "reving," just 2-3 "clicks" then nothing. Turned the key several times (at least 7-10 times), no response of any kind. It was totally dead. Radio would not come on. Interior lights would not come on. Dashboard lights would not come on.

Assuming I had a dead battery, I called my dad to come with his car (not too far away) for a jump start. While waiting for him to come, I figured I may as well get the jumper cables ready to go. Popped the hood, and when I clamped the red cable onto the positive battery post, the car radio started (bear in mind, the other end of the jumper cables were hooked up to nothing). So I turned on the interior lights, they came on!

I turned the key, and the car started!

How did my car magically start? And, what is wrong with the car and what can I do to prevent this from happening again?

(If it matters, it's a Buick about 10 years old.)

FS: ISU Tailgating Bus

I am thinking about selling my Cyclones Tailgating bus. The bus is setup and ready to go for any type of tailgating, but is setup with ISU graphics and decals. The bus is a 1996 E450 with the 7.3 gas motor that runs great. We have done many upgrades to the bus over the years to help make our tailgating experience better and setup a lot quicker.

On the outside of the bus you will see that it has full graphics front to back. I have also added a hitch on the rear so I can haul either a flat rack or a custom built rack that will hold a fire pit and fire wood.

Inside the bus there is a sound system that consists of a Alpine CD/Radio player, (4) Alpine 6.5" round speakers and (4) Alpine 6x9" speakers. 2 of the round 10" speakers play outside for you to listen to music or the TV's. There are also (2) 12" subs in the bus. Everything in the bus is wired up, so you can run everything off a generator so the bus's electrical system does not need to be used. The bus has U-Shaped seating that works great for when it is cold outside. There is a custom built table on the inside that you can either leave in there, or remove if needed. Under the 2 sides of the U-Shaped seating there is storage. Also, right behind the drivers seat, not shown in the pics, I have since built a cabinet that has a bunch more storage as well. Where the handicap lift used to be, there is a wood box that houses the slide out for TV's and TV receivers. I added this last year and it works great for a quick setup of your tvs and boxes. There is way to many features to list, so feel free to text or call with questions that you may have. I will also have some extras that will go with it, I just need to go through it first.

I built this bus in the summer of 2011 and have slowly added features along the way. We have taken this bus to a few games in Iowa City, but it has spent most of its life in Ames.

PM if you are interested.

RECRUITING: April Evaluation Period

I got a little info on where Iowa State's coaches will be this weekend during the April evaluation period. Remember, this is the only time coaches will be able to be out and evaluate this month after changes to NCAA rules.

*** First off, Steve Prohm was in Kansas City last night. He will head to Dallas today before going to Atlanta tomorrow.

*** Prohm is going to Dallas to meet up with James Kane, who was there last night as well. Kane will spend Sunday in Kansas City.

*** Daniyal Robinson and William Small are both spending the first two days of the evaluation period in Atlanta. D-Rob will head to Dallas tomorrow while Small will go to Milwaukee.

I'll pass along anything else I hear today or tomorrow but that's what I know about where all the staff is this weekend.

Open Scholarships for '19 Season

It appears from the news posted by Chris Williams that Clarence Nadolny looks to be a TTU commit and according to 247 Caleb Grill is 100% likely to commit to KSU. I think we sit well with Wheeler based on his comments after his visit to Jared Stansbury (he seems to like the facilities, coaching staff and our championships), Georgia really hasn't been very successful for a long time.

What is our outlook for the other two scholarships for the '19 class? I personally feel that our 3 HS rides are for these guys mentioned above and unless we get a sit out impact transfer, the smartest play for ISU is to get guys like Gilder, Tucker, etc who can come in play one and leave and we can have more time to recruit 4 year guys for the '20 class since we have a ton of offers out already.

INSIDER: Spring football nuggets (4-14-19)

Ok first of all, in April, my birdies generally aren’t going to be dogging too many guys. Too early. They/we don’t know enough yet. But I’ve been working the phones today trying to get information on yesterday’s scrimmage.

Here are some interesting nuggets I’ve gotten on the spring as a whole.

— “Breece Hall is special.” ...

--- With that, Kene has really had a great spring too. My guess is that Kene will start the season at RB but like David as a freshman, Breece will work his way into getting significant reps early and often. Kene isn't gonna be standing on the sideline much though. They love him and he's finally blossoming post the Achilles injury.

— On the O-Line, apparently Good-Jones looks a lot better than he ever has in the Campbell Era. Newell continues to be a staff favorite. They think he will be very, very good.

— Purdy, Milton and Rose were referred to as “elite” by one source.

— From what I’ve gathered, Scates and Shaw have had the type of springs that the staff had hoped for, which will be big in trying to fill the shoes of Hakeem Butler. The 180 turnaround by Scates from last August until now is really quite incredible.

— Defensive line … sounds like Josh Bailey is finally starting to make his presence felt. Was told that he and Tucker Robertson will be make a push to play this season.

— “Will McDonald is a special, true freak.”

— A lot of enthusiasm about the longterm potential of young corners Anthony Johnson and Datrone Young. The Rice grad transfer insurance policy feels like a big deal to most in the program.

I’ll keep digging.

Anyone in DSM having internet issues lately?

So, I've been testing this for a while now and can't seem to find a resolution. I have CenturyLink GPON fiber in my apartment, 40mb down, 5 mb up. When I run speedtests online to CL's closest nearby server, it'll run full speed:
upload_2019-4-27_11-7-22.png
However, when I select a nearby custom server (or any other server), I get this trash:
upload_2019-4-27_11-8-53.png
Often, it's even worse than that. Note, this is a wired connection -- most of my devices are wired. This has been going on for a least a couple months now since I noticed it.

I've had a CL tech come out to diagnose it, they just blame my router and call it quits. They test the connection out to their servers, which works fine as seen above, but that's it. I do have a custom network set up, I have an ASUS vLAN-capable router replacing their modem/router combo box, but I'm 99.9999% certain it's working perfectly fine. Here's some of the things I've noticed:
  • Pings are fairly consistent often, even during peak times.
  • The internet rarely drops completely. It works, just sometimes with terrible speeds.
  • My speeds vary greatly by website.

That bottom point concerns me... it's acting a lot like how I would expect a Net Neutrality thing to act like. To expand on that:
  • Netflix usually works fine, no buffering, good quality, as I would expect.
  • Hulu is hit and miss. Often doesn't buffer, but may drop in quality from time to time.
  • Twitch barely works at all; I cannot stream 1080p on Twitch. I can usually stream that with a bounce between 480p and 720p, but that's it. The stream is usually only able to pull down 1mb/s or less from Twitch.
  • YouTube can peg my entire connection by itself. I can stream 4K 60 fps on YouTube only, perfectly fine. I've tested it and watched it hit ~35mb/s consistently for minutes straight. No other service can even come remotely close to that speed.
  • Fox Sports stream is iffy, usually buffery, but it may run. ESPN streaming is nearly unwatchable sometimes.
  • I reimaged my PC lately, which required me to redownload my games. Games from Steam would peg 40mb/s, while games from other launchers (namely Origin) were very slow. Even just downloading the launchers from those companies' websites was slow.
  • Windows Updates generally come fast, but downloading the Windows 10 iso maker from Microsoft was horridly slow.
  • Loading even simple gifs on websites can stall out hard, depending on which site they're hosted on.

I'm pretty comfortable with networking. I've gone through my router settings many times to try to make changes to QoS and DNS and the like, nothing has made a great improvement. As a last resort, I factory-defaulted the CL modem/router combo box I still have and put that back in, by itself, with only one device connected to it via wire -- it still had the exact same problems. That completely took my hardware and network setup out of the equation. Without CL's help, I don't know where else I can go to. I'm planning on moving this summer to Ankeny, so I guess I'll see if my problems continue up there (for reference, I'm on the south side of DSM now). As much as I hate to say it, the things I've noticed with the streaming sites make it really act like a NN thing in action, but obviously I can't prove that. If it's just me having these issues, maybe it really is some hardware issue in my region (that's still CL's fault at the end of the day, they just can't or won't find it). I can't prove or disprove either theory.

Linux Users - Reccomendation for Easy Distro?

My parents' computer is not quite 10 years old...and has Windows 10 on it which is painful...slow and when it updates it takes forever! I am a proud Linux Mint (Cinnamon) user and find it to be very easy to use and it runs fast even on my older equipment. They really only use their computer for web-based activity (banking, email, searching for info on their interests). Anyway...I talked my dad into allowing me to install a Linux OS on their computer and plan on installing Linux Mint on their system. Was wondering if there is an even easier (less intimidating) Linux distro out there that someone might suggest. I used to know a lot more about the various distros available but once I started using Linux Mint I quite researching other distros. Again, I find Linux Mint to be great...but if there is something just as reliable and easy to use...I would like to take a look at it before I install some form of Linux onto my parents computer. Any recommendations? Thanks!

B12 Golf Championship

I'm not sure many follow our Iowa State golf team, but I had the unique opportunity to not only attend today's first and second rounds of the B12 Golf Championship, but along the way meeting the coach, assistant athletic director, and several of the player's parents. Despite reading that I not speak with the players I couldn't help with the Tiger Woods yell when one of our guys holed a very difficult sand shot. Or the major thumbs up on some incredible shots. I came away incredibly impressed. Sporting my Iowa State apparel seemed to catch the eye of the more faithful golf audience. Andrew went out of his way to walk directly to me and introduce himself. Several of the player's parents also went out of their way to strike up a conversation. All-in-all an incredible experience. The player's just seemed to have fun. I encourage any of you to take the opportunity to not only see, but support this team with unparalleled patronage. Living in West Virginia I don't get the opportunity too often, but if they ever return I'll be right at the front of the line.

Help bridging gateway

So I'm definitely not an IT whiz by any means but I feel im normally tech savvy enough to accomplish this .. But totally stuck.

I just switched from mediacom TV to YouTube TV, so wanted to improve my network range to make sure all my tvs had good connection. I previously used a Motorola all in one gateway for modem and router. I want to bridge this as I bought a new nighthawk to expand the range. However no matter what I try I'm not having success. I can not get my new nighthawk router to say it has internet connection from the Motorola. Is there more to this than bridging the gateway and plug / play the new router?

Maybe bit off more than I can chew...

On That Note: "Who by Numb3rs" Part 2

Welcome back to On That Note, a music-listening and discussion series hosted by @MeanDean, @cyclones500 and me, CycloneRulzzz.

In our OTN boardroom, the subject was brought up about doing a theme regarding numbers.
In discussing what to include both songs and bands we realized the theme is too massive to do in one segment. So as a group we decided on splitting this theme into 2 parts.

This week, in part 2 we are looking strictly at songs with numbers in the title of the song.

Kansas Inks $196 MM Deal With Adidas.

What a freaking joke!. $14 MM a year through '30-31 school year. After KU claimed they were, "victimized" by Adidas for funneling money to recruits & family while Self & Asst's had no knowledge. This really reeks.

KU AD, Long: "...We’ve spent months and months and (had) exhaustive conversations about going forward and how we will handle these things in the future and arrived at the conclusion that Adidas is committed like Kansas is to make sure that we abide by NCAA rules and certainly the law of the land..."
