Twister Sister Summary - Big scare...big win

I realize it's been a couple of days since the game, but I've been way too busy and just now getting a chance to put down my thoughts. Last week was a critical week for the sisters as they had a home/home opportunity to get back in the upper echelon of the Big 12. They took care of business on Wednesday and Saturday was a chance to move into 4th all by themselves.

For all intents and purposes the first half was a solid performance for the sisters. The team came out playing salty defense and the offense...well...we were seeing motion, passing and it was fun to watch! The ladies would slowly pull ahead in a very workmanlike manner. Rebounding solidly and turning opportunities into points. The two things that were rather weird was our inability to hit the three. The team went a woeful 1-10 in the 1st and improved to 4-10 in the second. A little slow going, but even those misses didn't keep them from getting the job done. Scoring 38 points in a half is just pretty solid play.

As seems to be the case year after year, the ladies had one quarter that was a bust. The third saw them go into neutral on offense and the defense got a bit sketchy at times (but overall was still pretty good). The team hit a grand total of TWO shots in the third as we saw OU get back into the game. OU's offense wasn't exactly a thing of beauty either. It was just a lackluster quarter that saw the Sooners come within 5 points. The scariest part of the second half was seeing Joens go down hard. When she left the court we could see the tears in her eyes and I was feeling like the season just came to an end (and crazily we saw the key player for the men go down later that evening). The place was deathly quiet when she left and when she came back no the court the Hilton crowd (which was a very good crowd) exploded. This kid is one tough cookie. In the end, the fourth quarter was nip and tuck with Sheri's Sooners even taking the lead temporarily. But wouldn't you know it, it was Joens calmly standing at the free throw line with a two point lead and the game hanging in the balance. Two made shots later (the free throw woes are over as the team shot 100%!) and the game was iced.

While the game wasn't pretty all the way through, two things jumped out at me. The offense has shown it can be a motion offense and when that is happening they can be very effective. When the team stays out on the perimeter (As we saw in the second half) it's much easier to defend our players. OU did a good job of neutralizing our perimeter offense and that allowed them to be in the game.

Observations

Free Throws - as I mentioned it was good to see us shoot well from the line. The team went 14-18 (corrected) with no one struggling.

Maggie - after the record setting game against OSU, Maggie dropped her turnover number to 5. Still way too many, but this is a new position she is learning. Not an exceptional game statistically, but she is still helping this team succeed in numerous ways such as her defense.

Wise - got a couple of minutes and still a shell of herself offensively.

Scott - started slow with her inside outside game but heated up fast. She is playing some of her best ball right now. What got me this time was seeing some of her aggressive play on defense. She blocked some key shots without drawing fouls late in the game that were huge. 18 points and 12 boards is nothing to sneeze at.

Joens - here we are again talking about the iron man of the team. A rather slow start on the day, but you know she will get hers. She did. After getting her shoulder popped back into place she came back and gritted her way to 17 and 15...another double-double for one of the best players in the conference.

Rae - Not a great shooting game, but she was aggressive on the court and (as it seems to always happen) took some hard charges on defense that shifted the game in our favor.

AD - she is quickly becoming one of my favorite players. Always hustles. Isn't flashy. But she gets the job done. She is the #3 player on this team and always kicks in a handful of rebounds and points that make a difference. She has become on of our best three point shooters and seems to hit them when we need it most.

What's next? Two road games this week and both are toss ups. Texas and TCU. I think we are on the upswing and wouldn't be surprised to see another sweep this week.

Riding time

I have been to or watched 5 meets so far this year. The one thing I don't get is why we don't try to get riding time in a lot of matches. Yesterday there were at last 6 times the other wrestler was up and out in under 9 seconds and we didn't appear to even want to hold them down. These were tight matches and riding out a guy for 30-60 seconds would seem to be an optimal idea to tire the bottom guy out. Am I missing something here, are our guys just not good on top or is this something Dresser would be coaching them to do. I am a novice fan at most but it gets maddening to give up the point that quick.

How can Rob not win this?

a couple of thoughts so far (pre final tribal council)

1) the girls should have tried to take out Rob with Andrea. It wouldn't have been successful because of the idol, but at least it would have shown that they tried to make a big move.

2) Andrea winning redemption island was by far the best case scenario for Rob

I'm especially looking forward to Phil's arguments. I'm expecting him to come clean about his act. I'm also interested in hearing what arguments they have against Rob winning (other than his wife had already won)

Insider Information Weekly Mailbag 02-05-2020
Presented by Coke Zero. The drink that makes you ask: why do we even have Diet Coke anymore?

@Cy$ asks: who gets more girls? Me or @CloneFan4
Pants:
Trick question; you’re both virgins.
GTO: This would be a tie, as I’m sure the number of Manti Te’o girlfriends you each have makes no difference when comparing against each other.

@Cy$ again: Fat chicks need loving too...seems to be the girls i attract anyways?
GTO:
Is Nate Stanley’s sister still stalking you?
Pants: I had a coach in high school that once said fat chicks are like mopeds: they’re fun as hell to ride, but it’s embarrassing as **** when you’re seen on one.

@Fitzy asks: You must select two real people, alive or dead, to serve as a candidate and their running mate in the 2020 Presidential election. If your selections pull off a clean sweep and win all 538 electoral votes, you win $1 trillion. Which two people do you pick, and why?
Pants:
Jesus/Ghandi. I feel like that covers a lot of the bases. And while not everyone would vote for them, I feel pretty confident they’d carry enough to win every state.
GTO: Our two greatest movie presidents of all time: Thomas J Whitmore (Bill Pullman) from Independence Day and James Marshall (Harrison Ford) from Air Force One. Alternates: Andrew Shepherd (Michael Douglas) from The American President and Tom Beck/Allan Trumbull (Morgan Freeman) from Deep Impact/Olympus has Fallen.
GTO: Damn it! Just realized this said REAL people. How about Lincoln and JFK? I don't think anyone could shoot down that ticket. I would even say that ticket would be bulletproof. Okay, I'll stop now. (apologies to @ImJustKCClone, since I know she lived through both of those)

@Cy$ asks: How do you get cured from being butt ******* ugly? Asking for a friend.
GTO:
Work out enough to at least be called a butterface. Hey, it’s better than having both a jacked face and un-jacked body.
Pants: Get a pocket *****.

@Cy$ complaining about getting some attention: how do I get rid of a stalker on CF?
@Doc @jcyclonee
Pants:
Are the stalkers Doc and JC? If so, frankly, you should be honored. I’ve drank beer with both of them. Well, Doc drank hard ciders, but same general concept still.
GTO: You could do worse than Doc and JC. However, I didn’t know Doc was getting drunk off the apple juice.

@jcyclonee asks (and apparently also withdraws the question?): Can you do something about all these basketball games being broadcast on ESPN+ and ESPNU? I'm not paying extra for that crap. Actually, hold off on that request until next year when we get all the recruits with cool names on the team.
GTO:
In the age of so many streaming services, ESPN+ does not offer enough for me to justify spending money on the service. I can just find a stream of the game and then proceed to watch ISU basketball brick away another game.
Pants: ESPN is literally the worst. Like, the absolute worst. And ESPN+ has nothing to do with it.
GTO: Remember the good ol’ days of ESPN? Back when I was in college, Sportscenter with Stuart Scott and Rich Eisen was must-see TV. I also miss the late night world’s strongest man and strongest women competitions, lumberjack games, etc. Perfect drunk watching after the bars. In my opinion it all started to go downhill when they started broadcasting WAY too much world series of poker crap. Seems like it was 24/7 poker for a while. They should have put Weird Al in charge of scheduling like in UHF and start mix/matching some of the shows like world’s strongest poker players where the poker chips weigh 50 pounds. A little more challenging being all-in then. Or maybe lumberjack vs. coked-up beaver tree felling. Just some ideas.

Coach K on Future of NCAA Basketball

https://sports.yahoo.com/coach-k-on-college-hoops-i-wish-the-whole-thing-would-change-084051665.html

I normally think Coach K is a bit of a blow-hard, but I thought his views on the future of college basketball are spot on. I also think this discussion is interesting in light of Coach Prohm's struggles. Situations like Wigginton, Lard and, to a lesser extent, THT or Haliburton, have really reduced the amount of high quality basketball players in the NCAA. Kids that would have stuck around 3-4 years and become stars in the past are now declaring with no real guarantee of NBA money.

As kids continue to find creative ways to skip college, and with the likelihood of the 1 year requirement being eliminated, it's going to be interesting to see what kind of quality the NCAA can keep up. I'm afraid the medoicore basketball we've seen this year might be the new norm.

Glass-half-full look at our schedule

I guess I'm more of a realist than a lot of people on here, but after thinking about out results so far, I guess I'm not as alarmed as I was a few days ago. We lost most of our scorers from last year. We had 2 NBA-level talents leave rather unexpectedly (THT, Wigginton) and our recruiting class and transfers weren't as good as we'd like. Was it hard for Prohm to recruit top caliber guards in November of 2018 when the recruits were thinking they'd be sitting behind Wigginton, THT and Haliburton? Maybe.

What were the expectations for this year given the attrition we had. I felt all summer and fall that this would be a down year similar to Hoibergs year 1. Lot's of close losses and a few bad losses.

Consider that there are 3 tiers of Big 12 teams:
  • Tier 1 = Teams you're going to lose to home and away -- Baylor, Kansas, West Virginia.
  • Tier 2 = Teams you should beat at home, but likely lose to on the read because Big 12 road wins are hard to come by -- Texas Tech, Oklahoma, Texas, TCU.
  • Tier 3 = Teams you should beat home and away -- Kansas State, Oklahoma State.
Using this criteria, here's our schedule color coded with green for wins against tough teams that I didn't think we'd beat, red for unexpected/bad losses, black for results I expected if I'm being honest about this year's team.

Win Home Miss Valley St
Loss Away Oregon St.
Win Home N. Illinois
Win Home So. Miss
Loss Nuet Michigan
Win Nuet Alabama
Loss Nuet Seton Hall
Win Home UMKC
Win Home Seton Hall
Loss Home Iowa
Win Home Purdue FW
Loss Home Florida A&M
Loss Away TCU
Loss Home Kansas
Win Home Oklahoma
Loss Away Baylor
Loss Away Texas Tech
Win Home Oklahoma St.
Loss Away Auburn
Loss Home Baylor
Loss Away Texas
Loss Away W. Virginia
Win? Home Kansas St.
Loss? Away Oklahoma
Win? Home Texas
Loss? Away Kansas
Win? Home Texas Tech
Win? Home TCU
Win? Away Oklahoma St.
Loss? Home W. Virginia
Win? Away Kansas St.

Minus the catastrophe with Florida A&M, I feel like we're doing maybe a bit better than I expected due to a couple of early season good wins. Hopefully we finish 6-3 and finish in the middle of the Big 12 as I expected.
