Charlie Weis read KU FBall Message Boards

This Athletic article is incredible - https://theathletic.com/3236758/2022/04/26/kansas-jayhawks-football-jim-harbaugh/

According to assistant coaches, he was so consumed with public perception that he often read Kansas football message boards.

“Charlie would make a statement and after the meeting someone would say: ‘That was right on the message board,’” one former assistant coach said. “Or, ‘We’re doing this now because this is what No. 1 Jayhawks Fan said.’ That mentality definitely permeated the office.”

@JusHappy2BeHere Is this a surprise for Baylor fans?

On That Note: I Want You, I Need You, I Post You

Back to Tuesday for this week's OTN. And I feel fine. The other OTN guys are @CycloneRulzzz and @cyclones500.

This week we're doing song TITLES ONLY that contain the words Want or Need. The variations such as Wants, Wanted, Wanting and even Wanna are allowed. As are Needs, Needed, Needing.

Last week the topic was Crying As Tears Go By. It can be found here:

Sun shade sail installation

I am looking to install a sun shade sail over my deck. I don't have much for shade in my backyard and the sun just beats down and makes the deck un-usable at times. I looked into building a pergola but those were expensive so I thought the sun sail was a better option.

Anyone have any experiences installing them? Are there concerns about them holding up with the wind?

Help Ukraine Rebuild

If you are a Life Serve Blood Center donor they have opened a program that lets you donate the points that you accumulate to helping rebuild blood center facilities in the Ukraine.
When they 1st opened the program you could only donate if you were giving blood, they have fixed that mistake and now will let you donate your points by calling in. Be patient though I think I was the 1st one to call in and it took them a while to sort through how to do it but it got done.

If you have a bunch a points your not using I think it might be a worthwhile cause to donate to.

Mods hopefully this can stay in off topic and not the cave I thought it would do more good here. TIA.

Job Interviews/Offer Stage Advice

Needed some advice on my situation so I decided to turn to the experts....

I am current unemployed by my own decision, recently relocated to Des Moines and am looking to switch careers. It has been 10 years since I last looked for a job and have little to no experience with HR, recruiters or the job hiring process. I have been interviewing with multiple companies and am currently in a different stage of the interview process with each company. The two companies below are the two main players.

Company A - This company/position is my number one choice. I completed the initial HR screening and first round of interviews with the hiring manager/team lead. They said there is one more interview left in the process which will most likely be scheduled for the end of this week/early next week. They hoped to make a final decision within the next two weeks.

Company B - This is my backup company. I have completed all interviews with this company and things went well. I played phone tag with their HR department late this afternoon and fully expect a verbal offer to come tomorrow. Company B is still a good option and I would have no problems working here.

My question is what is the best way to slow play Company B to let Company A opportunity fully develop and get to an offer stage? Two weeks seems like a long time to not accept/decline an offer. If company A falls though and an offer is not extended, I do intend to become employed by company B. Company A is just my first choice. Is it typical to accept an offer, continue to interview with the intent to accept a different offer if presented? My thought process would be try to slow play company B for a few days but still accept their offer. I would try to ask for a start date that would allow me time to fully complete the interview process with company A. I wouldn't let company B know I am continuing to interview with other companies. If offer from company A comes through, I would inform company B that I no longer intend to be employed by company B. I understand this would most likely close the door on any further opportunities with Company B.

Any thoughts?

Air Stunt Goes Bad

Not sure why they wanted to do this, but I found this statement rather funny

The cause of the crash remains unknown.

Football Parking

I purchased season tickets this year after not having them for a number of years. I got an email that I could buy a season parking pass that is $100 but would require a minimum $300 donation. That much isn't in my budget. What are my parking options if I don't want to go this route? Can grass lot parking still be purchased on a game by game basis for like $20?

Iowa Wading Laws

Not all that important but looking at some possibilities this summer in eastern Iowa for tributaries to some of the mid-sized rivers.

Has anything changed for wading in Iowa streams?

Used to be for most waters, the landowner owned the land or bottom of the stream, but you could paddle most.

I saw some stuff on forums that certain waters are labeled 'meandering' and are wadeable for public use but I can't find the list, and for whatever reason can't find the info on the IA DNR site.

TIA.

Players should NOT be paid!!! Probably done with ISU

Sick of this crap. So much for our amazing coach (future HOF!!!) who can only do so much w/ new uniforms, etc. Probably done being an ISU fan. Screw this.

CFB is being destroyed. Schools openly paying players. No loyalty w/ transfers. Too many bowl games. Coaches crying about losing players due to $$$, yet schools raking in 200-300% more money. Media only give a crap about favorite conferences. Not what I grew up with. Can't do it anymore.

I'm done with constant disappointment!!!!!!!!

So much useless $$$ for stadium improvements. Sucks we have no sugar daddy like others, but yay for our press box! Everyone knows good teams = paying kids, but "wink" schools aren't involved. Just boosters with their fake "jobs" for a years worth of money. Players with flashy cars. Big surprise it's the SEC at the center again!!!

I'm a fan, not a freaking ATM. PLAYERS SHOULD NOT BE PAID!

They're student-athletes. Funny how good schools becomes easier for fancy recruits. Sad to see our conference blow up again. First the Missouri guys, then the Okie school and others. Guess history doesn't matter, but yay for us and Kansas State. No way any of the new tech (TV stuff) will make a difference.

You know what. I'm done it's over. Bye

____

I am, of course, talking about Iowa State in 1936.

In 1935, SEC started openly paying w/ "athletic" scholarships. Earlier, some players played for multiple teams in the same season. In 1934/35, record numbers of bowl games added (Sun, Sugar, Orange). A Big Ten coach (Stagg) cried about others paying players more, but Big Ten school revenues increased 200-300%. Elite media only cared about Big Ten, Ivy, and east coast teams--scraps for other regions (like ESPN & SEC).

Massive stadium construction in 1920s--UNC had a single donor essentially build theirs, but ISU "kept up" in this period with a new press box. Media wrote it was impossible to have good teams unless schools (via alumni) paid players. When Notre Dame "recruited" a player in the late 1920s, Knute was worried about leaving behind a paper trail. Players had jobs that required no effort or even their presence. Players got cars (Ford Model T, etc.). In 1930s, others complained about southern schools being the most aggressive in unsavory methods.

In the 1920s, Northwestern had a good player who had horrible grades and needed to sit out the season, but as it approached, magically came up with 15 credits. In 1928 when ISU and others formed a new conference, Washington U (Missouri) and Oklahoma State were dropped. Conferences remained in flux before and after that point. Radio moved from regional broadcasts of games to national. First TV sports were in 1936--kinda like fans hoping for streaming now.

In 1936, ISU had a future HOF coach (George Veenker) who switched uniforms to a different color in his earlier years to promote success.

____

Absolutely none of these issues are new. Dating from the 1800s, there have been concerns over academics, money, conference changes, governing reform, eligibility, and media. Long overdue for CFB to spin off from schools & license back name/imagery so players are no longer screwed over. ISU's situation has always been the same. Small fish in a big pond. That's what makes it fun. Go Cyclones!

Mineral Springs Brewing Owatonna Mn

Stopped at Mineral Springs Brewing in Owatonna tonight, it's fairly easy to get to though the street nearest to it is a one way running south so you have to go by it then come back.

Nice decor, friendly bartender, pretty good beers, sell snacks the Carroll's Popcorn is really good.
Had a flight I would rank them 1. Cream Ale 2. Pelton Dark Lager 3. Emmet&Phyllis Amber 4. Wencl wheat ale. Not a bad one in the bunch, but nothing super outstanding. They have 14 beers on tap so it will be worth a stop back sometime.

MN brewery ranking so far 1. Paw Print 2. Angry Hog 3. Mineral Springs 4. Gravity Storm

Setting up AmazonSmile so a percentage of your Amazon purchases go to Cyclone Gridiron Club (directly to ISU Football; or other charity of choice)

Buying things from Amazon can be set up to help ISU football, Cyclone Gridiron Club!
Do you buy things from Amazon?

If you want to help in some way but can't or don't want to make a donation for whatever reasons, you CAN help the Gridiron Club if you buy with Amazon. Set up Amazon Smile and select the Iowa State Cyclone Gridiron Club. Every time you make a purchase through Amazon Smile, they will donate a small percentage of what you spend to the Gridiron Club. (Just make sure before you hit the final purchase button that you're under Amazon Smile and not the regular Amazon page....yeah...there's a difference.)

You can also see how much you've contributed and how much the club has earned in overall donations.

I'm sure every little bit helps.
In more detail: Go to your regular Amazon web page, then under top banner hover over but don't click "Accounts & Lists", then click "AmazonSmile" (under "Your Account"). Set your charity to "Cyclone Gridiron Club" or another charity of your choice. Save this "AmazonSmile" page to somewhere in your favorites.

In the future, shop on Amazon as you usually do. Then when you have filled your "Cart" and are ready to purchase your selected items, you must switch to or pull up your "AmazonSmile" web page (from your Saved favorites). Your Cart should be loaded there as well. Click on "Cart" and finalize your purchase (making sure it is on the AmazonSmile page!). It is about that simple.

I haven't purchased anything yet thru AmazonSmile, but I set mine up on Thursday, and put in "Cyclone Gridiron Club" as my charity. I then made a couple of 'dry runs', and I think it should work fine next time I want to use Amazon.

If I've missed any details, please add them here. CW, you are welcome to use any part of this post, if you want to create a "sticky". @ChrisMWilliams
