Williams and Blum: Duggan Story VERY inaccurate

Although CW’s story of the decision “do you take Purdy or Duggan?” is interesting… it is incredibly inaccurate.

First, Purdy and Duggan were not in the same recruiting class. Purdy was 2018, taken in the same class as Re-Al Mitchell. Duggan was 2019.

Which leads to an even sadder truth. Yes, Iowa State did want to get a quarterback early in their 2019 class and Duggan was taking some time to reach his decision. On February 10th, 2018, Iowa State would secure the commitment of Labette, KS QB Easton Dean.

Max Duggan would commit to TCU about two months later… 8 months prior to his early signing period.

Hardenbrook's ousted from the Iowa State Fair

Iowa State Fair ousts four vendors for underreporting sales in 2022

Highlights since I know you guys hate paywalls

- The four vendors are Hardenbrooks, JR Services (JR Donuts), Pete's Lemonade Shake-Ups/Pete's Ice Cream & Sno-Cones, & Dad's old fashioned lemonade
- Iowa Dept of Revenue conducted an audit and found that all four had underreported their sales. Hardenbrooks: Underreported by $46K+ over a five day period
Pete's: Underreported by $32K from 8/11-16
Dad's Old-Fashioned Lemonade: Underreported by appox $3,450 over the same period as Pete's
JR Services: Underreported over $16K from 8/11-18
- "The revenue department crackdown comes after last year's fines by federal and state authorities against a fair beverage distributor [Iowa Beverage Systems] who they said had illegally tried to control beer sales at the grandstand."
- The Iowa State Fair has sent letters to the four offending vendors saying they would not be invited back after violating concession rules

Dual Recap

Hey crew - here is my recap from todays dual.

I know a loss sucks but today was still solid in a lot of ways I think. I’m very excited for Paniro Johnson. Swiderski is going to be a beast. As he continues to grow and clean up the mistakes he’s going to be a serious problem. Yongers antics were entertaining from a rivalry standpoint but coach said it best when he said that he needs to reel that in a bit.

Hoping to have full press conference video this evening once it’s shared by the athletic department.

I shared a few clips and a few videos during the dual on my twitter.

I’m driving back to central Iowa now! Wish me luck on this boring drive. I’ll have photos this evening.

On to 2023

The first part of this season, had me thinking that It might be time for Christy to move on. Recruiting seemed to be down, and they had some very unimpressive losses. I misread the situation as it turns out CJL was just finding the right combinations. She went to the 6-2, which as an AA setter, you know is not her preference. The came alive, and knocked off Texas, Baylor, and KU at home. They could never solve lowly KSU though, and we were reverse swept at KU.

The seniors who are out of eligibility include Holthaus, Newsome, Thomas , and Mitchell. I got the feeling looking at her in the game late, that Matz is moving on. Don’t know about Hatch and Shannon, but would think they would be welcomed back for a grad year.

The 6-2 worked this year to allow Morgan Brandt to get experience. I think we’re set at setter for the next three years. Stonestreet appears to put Libero back to being more what is expected at Libero U., though she does need to improve her passing.

The middle is in good shape with Englbrecht and Perry back, plus an MB recruit in McCune. Duckworth is an amazing athlete given her height. I really hope Hatch gives it another go as a grad. Even if she does, we’re going to need some more hitters to step up with just one recruit in Gonzalez. We really relied on seniors in that spot. Perhaps we can find another Thomas two in the portal.

Bottom line, we have some good pieces in the foundation, but CJL and her coaches are going to have to bring along a few hitters both outside and right side to get back to next year’s tournament. With NIL, however, the strong volleyball schools are only going to get stronger.

On That Note: New ’22

Welcome back to "On That Note," CF’s weekly hub for music-listening & discussion, hosted by @MeanDean, @CycloneRulzzz and me, cyclones500.

For this segment, we focus on favorite songs you encountered in 2022.

That includes any/all of the following:

1. New music released in 2022 (and final month or so of ’21)
2. Music released prior to that, but you didn’t discover until this year.
3. Favorites from the distant past that you revisited frequently during past 12 months.

(Optional: If it’s No. 2 or 3, include a note with your clip regarding the time frame/details/back story.)

A couple of my top songs coming in a follow-up post.

Cheers to a year in music!

Freaky dreams

I typically don't dream, or don't remember them vividly anyway, but a recent one got in my head.

What I remember is remarkably short. I was at my parent's old house (but slightly different) that I grew up in. I ran up the steps outside and when I turned and went inside the door, it was the same house, but abandoned, for decades. Just tattered cloth and grey rotting wood. I woke up almost immediately, but in that moment, it was like I fully understood the reality of the passage of time in a profound way. The feeling was an odd but powerful mix of deep sorrow and acceptance.

Just curious to hear about other experiences with dreams.

Range (Oven) Problems? Suggestions.

Our oven is an electric Frigidaire that was (probably) new with the house, built in 2004 before we moved in.

I replaced the heating element about 3 years ago.

Now, it has this problem: The temperature is wildly inconsistent. We put a thermometer in the over to gauge. You might have it set on 250, and one time, it can't get above 200. Another time, with the same setting, it might be 400.

It can over-shoot or under-shoot badly. (Mostly undershooting, but not entirely). So things are either taking forever to cook, or getting over-cooked.

My main question is this: I hate to pay a repair man $200 to come out and say "time to replace the oven." On the other hand, I don't want to drop $1,000 on a new oven if it's just a $50 part. I have no appliance experience.

Suggestions?

We Will Donation Drive - Finish 2022 Strong

Been frustrated by the season? Excited by some of the key pieces on defense? Looking forward to a new Offensive Coordinator?

If you’re looking ahead to the off-season and everything it could mean - staff changes, player and recruit poaching, portal targets, etc - and have the ability and desire to help the cause, please donate today!

If you have the ability to, please consider offering a donation match of a specific amount to help the drive continue.

Please do not use this as a general NIL discussion thread, there are plenty of those. Likewise, do not use this thread to try and diminish those that may not be able or willing to donate, that too are fans.

Offensive Coordinator- Ideas

1. Western Kentucky OC Ben Arbuckle. They averaged nearly 36 points per game

2. Tulane OC Jim Svoboda. Averaged 33 points per game. This would be my preference as he is from Denison Iowa. He would have to be interested in coming home and stepping up a level.

3. App State OC Kevin Barbay - I put him here b/c they score points and always seem to have explosive offenses.

But what do you guys think? I love the idea of scooping up an over achiever in a non power 5, that is a sweet spot in my opinion. I am honestly agnostic to their style: running spread, passing spread, option, whatever. I simply want someone with more creativity, who has a tendency to do more with less.
