Iowa NIL Update

Wanted to share some of what I’ve put together on Iowa NIL from various sources since there is a lot of talk about what we might be up against.

From what I’ve heard – Iowa could pull together roughly $5-6 mil for NIL right now between their various channels. That’s expected to increase another $5-7 mil in the next 12-18 months as they realign where donors direct money. There are some that believe they could get to $20 mil by 2025 as the new media contract allows further realignment of funds.

While $10-12 mil/year wouldn’t put them in the same category as the elite NIL schools (Bama, Georgia, USC, tOSU, Michigan, TN, Miami, A&M, Oregon, Florida, Texas, Nebraska, etc), it would put them in the Top 30. If they got to $20 mil, they’d be closer to 15-20th.

Heisman Trophy malaise

This isn't a spicy take, by any means, but can you think of a major sports award that has lost its meaning and gravitas to the same degree that the Heisman Trophy has?
I feel like the shine has almost completely come off this apple. The candidates feel like an afterthought. We already know who's going to win. Make no mistake, Caleb Williams deserves it. But if you look at the history of the award this century, there are only something like 5 non quarterbacks. It's just feels very run of the mill, anymore, and not nearly as prestigious. Perhaps my memory is assigning more significance to bygone days.

The first of two previews on the way for this Wednesday's Cy-Hawk game at Carver. Interesting quote from Joens, but not at all surprised when I heard it. Going to be another great game:

RECRUITING: Stanford RB transfer Arlen Harris Jr. says Iowa State is 'really high' on his list

For you knight owls, talked to Arlen Harris Jr. tonight. He visited Iowa City last week and will visit Ames this weekend. Seems Iowa State is already very high up on his list of choices. Narrowed it down to four for us - but keep in mind that is just at the moment and a lot can still happen.

In a record setting year, the Big XII conference has qualified 8 teams for Bowl season. All games will be on ESPN.

Here is the scoreboard:

With TCU elevated to the CFP, the remaining teams are promoted a level higher in the bowl pecking order than they would have been. That means any wins will need to be hard fought. The oddsmakers project the Big XII will go 2-6, with only Baylor and Texas being favored. But what d they know?

Who you got?

And where will the odds makers be wrong?

Blum's clock management

Listened to the Williams & Blum podcast this morning. Felt for Brent and his dilemma with a kid opening birthday presents during the last match of the CyHok wrestling meet and during the MBB game. However, I think he has to blame this 99% on bad clock management. It seems like he let his guard down once our football season was over and didn't pay close enough attention to the schedules for the other sports. Proves the point about how important clock management is. Can't blame Crystal for this one.

Do bowl games matter anymore?

Due to the transfer portal and opt outs the teams trotted out onto the field for bowl games are not the teams that earned that bowl game. For example look at Iowa. Due to transfers and 1 injury they will be sending out a QB that is either a rs freshman or a true freshman, neither of which have taken a single snap in a live college football game, will be with out key contributors at rb and wr in Gavin Williams, Arland Bruce, and Keagan Johnson. This doesn't even talk about opt outs.

I understand some of the opt outs being worried about injuries but at what point do we start to worry about that? Should they also opt out of conference championship games since they don't really mean anything? How about the last game of the regular season? Is it because there are so many bowls now, the kids just don't care, or something I just don't get? Does an expanded CFP give them more reason to finish the season out?
