Weekly Media: St. John, Isaac Dean & Rocky Elam Preview OU/OSU and More

As No. 3 Iowa State wrestling heads into a tough road trip against No. 21 Oklahoma and No. 3 Oklahoma State, the focus goes beyond matchups — from the intensity of the wrestling room to the relationships off the mat that matter most. Rocky Elam, Isaac Dean and coach Derek St. John talk culture inside the room, preparation for a tough road test and mindset driving the team.

Great stuff from these guys.

OU/OSU duals

Have been waiting for this one ever since Casey left Ames to go to Stallwater!
125: 0-3 OSU
133: 0-6 OSU
141: 3-6 OSU (Assuming Ech is back)
149: 6-6 tie (Casey will get a TD in the first period then Jacob Frost absolutely breaks him in the 2nd and 3rd periods, wins 8-3.)
157: 6-9 ISU (I like this matchup stylistically for Zerban)
165: 9-9 Dee typically doesn’t bonus and Euton will keep it within striking distance.
174: 9-12 OSU
184: 12-12 I think Dean has a great chance to win this in overtime.
197: 12-15 ISU. Rocky gets a TD and wins 4-2.
HWT: Hoping we start at this weight. Yonger goes out there and majors Docuet.
12-19 Final. Maybe a little too optimistic but I’m very pumped for this dual!

Cool Story about Coach Dresser

So, I was at the Ed Winger Invitational yesterday in Urbandale to watch some of the best wrestling our state has to offer at the high school level.

A close friend of mine grew up with Maximus Dhabolt’s dad (who my friend is still close to) so my friend and I have taken an interest in Max’s wrestling and have traveled a lot to watch him wrestle. Unfortunately, Max has been injured but he made his return yesterday and lost in the finals to a tough kid that is committed to Northwestern (Jaxon Miller).

Anyway, we are sitting there waiting for the finals and up walks Coach Dresser. He sits right next to us and we introduce ourselves and get to talking to him about Max and the season and just wrestling in general. Really cool to chat with him! Then the 144 final starts and it is Jaimon Mogard from Ames. Coach Dresser is watching the match and goes “woah, who is that kid?! He is super high level, that’s not normal stuff”. We tell him who he is and that he is a freshman and he is just raving about this kid. Suffice to say, I believe Mogard had firmly planted himself on Coach’s radar!

I joked with Coach that we’d remember this moment (the moment Coach found him) when Jaimon was winning a National Title as a Cyclone.

Just a really cool day for me as a wrestling fan as I also got to chat with former Cyclone, 4 time state champion and legendary coach Dan Knight. He was a pleasure to chat with also and so was his son (committed to wrestle at Illinois) and other wrestlers.

No. 3 ISU puts on a show in Humboldt, tops No. 15 South Dakota State 29-7

Post-Dual recap below:

Sunday’s result was expected. Where Iowa State delivered it was the point.

Williams & Blum: These are good times

Chris Williams & Brent Blum go in-depth on a massive bounce-back week for both Iowa State basketball programs. Now, the focus turns to a daunting month of February schedule-wise and seeding for the NCAA Tournament. Plus, Chris sat down and interviewed Jimmy Rogers last week. The guys give their reactions to that and more, all courtesy of Mechdyne.

Enjoy!
