No Troll What We'd Like to See Discussion

Let’s just make a few assumptions right away to frame the discussion:
  1. We aren’t going to crap on players. They are doing their best. I absolutely respect the heck out of every one of them, most of whom came from somewhere a long way away to a place they didn’t know to try and achieve a dream.
  2. Prohm isn’t going to get fired after this year.
  3. Hoiberg isn’t coming back.
  4. TH is going pro.
  5. This season, for all intents and purposes, is over. They can shuffle the pieces around on the team, start one guy over another, etc, but let’s be honest, it’s not going to make much of a difference.
Now, for what I’d like to see for 2021:
  1. Identity on defense. The departure of TH will be the last departing plus player on offense. For all of Prohm’s talk about being tough, gritty, defensive minded… he has not been able to effectively communicate it. He needs to fire an assistant and bring in a guy to instill that mindset in this team. If he doesn’t do this, he’ll be fired anyway and players will likely transfer out, so he needs to do this even if it drives guys away.
  2. Also on this, we tried a bunch of defenses yesterday that I thought were just doomed to failure. The Young/MJ two bigs doubling the opposing big was an alley oop machine. The zone was a disaster. That said, I think we need to lean into that zone next year. We go full Baylor. Foster/Conditt down low, Johnson or Blackwell on the edges, and a consistently feisty Jackson at the point. I honestly think we’ll have to play 90’s Knicks basketball, slow it down, grind it out, work from the inside out.
  3. We absolutely need Jackson to develop a 3 point shot. He’s struggling mightily right now but I like what I’m seeing from him from an effort and tenacity level. Honestly I think he’s the only guy actually playing like Prohm wants this team to right now.
If this team is going to have success going forward, the identity of the team needs to change. If it doesn’t next year and we roll the ball out the same way we are this year without TH, that’s going to be one of the worst teams in the modern history of the program. It’s up to Prohm to figure that out or get fired. I do think there are kids that want to defend the legacy of Hilton on this team and I’m sure this isn’t what they pictured when they signed up for this.

I also think we should honestly just be nice and not freak out the rest of the way. This year is what it is. No use getting pissed about it.

OT: 1917

Just out of 1917. It's great. Truly great. Yet at the same time I was a tad underwhelmed. I went in thinking this was THE war movie that will be so good and ends up winning best picture. Maybe expectations too high. Went in thinking it would be 100/100 score. But I'd give it 85/100...which is still great. One of the best of the year no question but was hoping for more.

I don't see it winning best picture either. Best director and cinematography for sure. I also think Dunkirk was better. Sue me.

A Beilein to Success!

A third approach here, with two angles.
Let's assume that John Beilein is fired by the Cavs, giving us the chance to offer him redemption Norman Dale style, one last ride to glory.

We can ask him to buy out Prohm with his NBA buyout, but that probably won't fly.
So, because someone brought it up and it's fun, we turn the ped bridge money into Beilein money and bring that guy right in. We know he can evaluate talent, scheme, and win.

So, option #3.

Utah Valley

What's everyone's predictions for the UV meet tonight?

141 - Parker Dec Hunsaker 7-3
149 - Leisure Dec Knutzen 10-3
157 -Carr MD Loveless 14-3

I like the way Gannon has been wrestling and will pick him for the mild upset at 285.

Go Cyclone Radio

I remember in the 1980s listening to Cyclone basketball on the radio. I already pay ESPN enough. Hello John Walters. Sorry I am older than most. I had an antenna in the attic mounted on a pipe, inside a larger pipe, so I could reach my hand in an access to rotate the antenna toward Sioux city for High School State basketball games, Omaha for regular TV and towards Ames for WOI and Iowa State Basketball. I am looking forward to the throwback. The WOI games were fuzzy but very watchable. Better than the American Sportsman on ABC.

For the first time in 15 years...

For the first time in my roughly 15 years of Cyclone fandom, I turned to a different channel tonight. As a teen who was obsessed with ISU sports I would still love to come home and love watch Craig Brackins and crew lose on a Wednesday night. I suffered through the Chizik and McDermott eras, watched us lose 77-7 to Baylor in football and get smacked countless other time. I still watched every second I could because I loved it. I’m the guy who stays until the last second because I want to see what the reserves look like and what the future holds.

Maybe it’s just me getting older, but this isn’t even fun to watch.

Drone Swarms Over Colorado and Nebraska

Mysterious drones have been flying over Colorado and Nebraska in recent weeks and authorities can't figure out who's behind the aircraft.

Deputies have spotted more than 16 unmanned drones flying in northeast Colorado after authorities received multiple reports of drone sightings last month, the sheriff's offices in Colorado's Yuma and Phillips counties said.

How did Baylor football do what ISU couldn't?

Baylor's record last 3 seasons:
2017: 1-11
2018: 7-6
2019: 11-3 or 12-2

Iowa State's record last 3 seasons:
2017: 8-5
2018: 8-5
2019: 7-6

What was it that allowed Baylor to take the steps that ISU couldn't, but was expected to by many pundits before the year started? One aspect that makes me salty about this is, Baylor copied Heacock's defense, but did it better.

Just curious about others thoughts on the subject. It might of been discussed in other threads.

Backing Up the Trucks

I offer today option #2:
We reallocate that $10 for the pedestrian bridge, donate that to Oregon for the express purpose of buying out Altman, who then buys out McDermott's deal at Creighton, and brings the big dude back to Ames.

As fans, we struggle with the idea of coaches we haven't seen before, so this is a creative way to bring back that familiarity we crave.
