Five Cyclones finish on the podium at Southern Scuffle

CHATTANOOGA, Tennessee – Seven Cyclones competed on day two of the Southern Scuffle Tuesday, with five earning a spot on the podium. Iowa State finished in 11th place as a team with 48 points.

Zach Redding was Iowa State’s highest place-winner in the tournament with a fifth-place finish while Joel Devine placed sixth. Grant StottsRamazan Attasauov, and Julien Broderson all finished in eighth place.

Placing Matches
133 Fifth-Place Match – Redding received a medial forfeit from Chance Rich (CSUB).

133 Seventh-Place Match – Attasauov took on No. 23 Sean Carter (App State) in the seventh-place match and, after surrendering the first takedown of the match, bounced back to win, 5-3. The Russian secured a pivotal takedown and a ride out with 18 seconds left in the first period to lead 3-2 after one. Attasauov put on a tough ride to begin the third period and secured the riding time point before fending off Carter for the final minute of the match.

165 Seventh-Place Match – Stotts took on Stanford’s Hunter Garvin in the 165 seventh-place match but fell, 6-4. Stotts took a 3-1 lead into the final period but surrendered a pair of takedowns to Garvin and placed eighth in the tournament.

174 Seventh-Place Match – A pair of first-period takedowns from Tyler Eischens (Stanford) put Broderson into an early hole in the 174 seventh-place match. Broderson trailed 6-3 entering the final period and rallied to knot it up at 6-6 after an escape and a takedown. Eischens managed an escape with 1:14 remaining but Broderson was unable to find the winning takedown as he fell, 7-6.

184 Fifth-Place Match – Devine squared off against No. 25 Jacob Ferreira (Hofstra) in the 184 fifth-place match but fell, 8-3. After a scoreless first period, Devine surrendered an escape and a takedown to begin the second. Another Ferreira takedown, followed by a two-point near fall, in the third period put the match out of reach for Devine.

Jacqueline graduated from Iowa State University with a degree in Journalism and Mass Communications. She has been fortunate enough to have interned for Cyclone Fanatic for 2 and a half years before being promoted to stay on. She currently wears a lot of hats at Cyclone Fanatic: Social Media Director, Iowa State Wrestling beat reporter, and staff photographer. Jacqueline loves reading and watching trash reality TV shows when she's not watching sports. One of her favorite accomplishments is having interned for the Minnesota Vikings and during Super Bowl LII.
