RECRUITING: Ebel’s five touchdowns lead HMS to another win in Week 8

We’re nearly arriving at the end of the regular season for high school football in the state of Iowa. We break down each of Iowa State’s 2023 commits performances on the prep scene this week in our high school football tracker:

Cyclone commit performance of the week

ATH KOOPER EBEL, HARTLEY-MELVIN-SANBORN

Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn (6-2) 41, Akron-Westfield (1-7) 8

Kooper Ebel is doing insane things at the Class A level and continued his successful plays at the quarterback position this week for the HMS Hawks. The two-way star collected 257 yards on 19 rushing attempts, totaling five touchdowns on the night in his team’s sixth win of the season. The Hawks are streaking towards the playoffs behind Ebel’s athleticism.

QB J.J. KOHL & DB JAMISON PATTON, ANKENY

Ankeny (7-1) 31, Waukee Northwest (4-4) 7

J.J. Kohl was nearly perfect in his team’s seventh win of the season, finishing 15-17 for 120 yards with a touchdown through the air as well as on the ground. Ankeny made an early statement in the game by going up 14 points and Jamison Patton added an exclamation point with this interception:

ATH ABU SAMA, SOUTHEAST POLK

Southeast Polk (7-1) 42, Ankeny Centennial (4-4) 16

Abu Sama rushed for 183 yards on 22 carries in Southeast Polk’s latest win as the team looks to go back to the state championship game in 2022. Sama ended with three touchdowns, one which can be seen below, and 3.5 tackles on the defensive side of the ball.

WR KAI BLACK, URBANDALE

Waukee (4-4) 30, Urbandale (5-3) 7

Kai Black had three receptions for 26 yards in a loss to Waukee on Friday night for Urbandale. The J-Hawks are still in position for a playoff spot, however.

TE CARSON RHODES, NEVADA

Nevada (7-1) 16, Humboldt (7-1) 8

Carson Rhodes, Iowa State’s first commitment in the 2023 class, did not register any stats in Nevada’s seventh win of the season.

Cam Smith and Austintown-Fitch took home another win on Friday, improving to 8-1 on the season. Smith posted a mixtape of his highlights from the year ahead of the team’s final regular season game this weekend.

EDGE Samuel Same (Derby, Kansas)
Derby 55, Maize South 7
Stats were not listed in Derby’s fifth win of the season Friday, however Samuel Same came home with a sack and a fumble recovery in the victory.

ATH Carson Hansen (Lakeville South, Minnesota)
Lakeville South 28, Shakopee 10
Stats were not listed from Lakeville South’s win over Shakopee from last Thursday, but the Cougars will be on their way to the playoffs. They close the regular season out on Thursday this week.

LB Jack Sadowsky (Batavia, Illinois)
Batavia 41, St. Charles East 14
Jack Sadowsky did not have any listed stats in Batavia’s sixth win of the season. The team ends the regular season this Friday against St. Charles North.

DL Anthony Cunningham (Belleville East, Illinois)
Belleville East 41, Belleville West 0
Anthony Cunningham earned a tackle in Belleville East’s win over its crosstown rival.

OL Brandon Henderson (East St. Louis, Missouri)
East St. Louis 26, Edwardsville 7
The Flyers from East St. Louis took down Edwardsville for yet another win on the season Friday.

DL Trevor Buhr (Washington, Missouri)
Washington 56, North Point 15
Trevor Buhr’s stats were not listed in Washington’s fifth win of the season.

WR Beni Ngoyi (Lincoln High, Nebraska)
Lincoln High 41, Columbus 21
Stats were not available for Beni Ngoyi’s team’s win over Columbus, but Lincoln improved to 4-4 on the season.

Iowa State boasts four commits from Florida and another non-Midwest commit from Oklahoma, each of which will kick off the season this Friday:

Tashawn James found two receptions for 12 yards offensively and collected four tackles in his team’s sixth win of the season.

DL Jason Hammond (St. Thomas Aquinas, Florida)

Jason Hammond’s team earned a rivalry win on Friday over Fort Lauderdale to improve to 7-0 on the season. Hammond, who wears No. 9, and the team posed for pictures after its latest win.

S Norris Davis (Tampa Bay Tech, Florida)
Tampa Bay Tech 28, Wharton 0
Norris Davis finished with six tackles and an interception in his team’s win over Wharton to help Tampa Bay Tech improve to 8-0 on the year.

WR Michael Parkes (Bayside, Florida)
Merritt Island 28, Bayside 13
Offensive statistics were not posted in a loss for Bayside. The team is 4-3 with three more regular season games left.

OL Brendan Black (The Bolles School, Florida)
The Bolles School 55, Wolfson 6
Brendan Black and The Bolles School earned its third-straight win to improve to 5-3 on the season Friday night.
