Former Cyclones take field at NFL training camps

A number of former Cyclones are taking the field this week at training camps around the NFL.

We compiled a list of important info for Cyclone fans that want to keep up with the fellas, starting with teams that have more than one player from the program at camp.

The Chicago Bears are housing two former Iowa Staters in RB1 David Montgomery and tight end Chase Allen.

Both rookies and veterans reported July 26.

The top target for quarterback Aaron Rodgers this fall could be Iowa State receiving great, Allen Lazard. Him and Steve Wirtel are camping with Green Bay.

The Packers will hold a joint practice with the Saints (Soehner) this camp at an undisclosed date.

Landen Akers earned a Super Bowl ring with the Los Angeles Rams last season. Jake Hummel joins him this year, as an undrafted free agent looking to follow the same path Akers did.

The Jets brought in Breece Hall to be their starting running back this season, and he’s performed well in camp thus far.

Brock Purdy will compete against Trey Lance and Nate Sudfeld for the 49ers quarterback job this year. He’ll have very good odds to be on the 53-man roster at the beginning of the season.

Mike Rose is going to try to play his way onto the field for the Kansas City Chiefs as part of Iowa State’s latest graduating class.

Kene Nwangwu goes back to the Vikings as a running back and kick return specialist. He’s rated by EA Sports as the third fastest running back in the NFL and has brought Minnesota fans joy in recent years.

Kicker Andrew Mevis is competing for the starting job in Jacksonville against Ryan Santoso. This spot come down to a position battle.

Tight end Dylan Soehner will return to the Saints roster after an injury plagued his first season with the team. It should be encouraging for Iowa State fans that New Orleans kept him around, they believe in Soehner.

Michael Jacobson was last known to sign a practice squad deal with the Colts. It appears that he’s suiting up at camp and is still listed on the Colts roster.

Eyioma Uwazurike will begin his career in Denver. He did an interview with the Broncos earlier this summer.

Linebacker Willie Harvey Jr. goes into Year 4 with the Cleveland Browns this season. They’ll host the Eagles in a joint practice.

Australia native Matt Leo remains on the Eagles roster, as the NFL’s international exemption allows teams to not count a player from another country against its 90-player roster for camp.

Charlie Kolar was set to take the field for the Ravens, but may have to have sports hernia surgery which would cause him to miss most of camp.
