AMES, Iowa – The Big 12 Conference announced the 2020 volleyball schedule on Friday. The Cyclones, as well as all members of the league, will play a 16-match, conference-only schedule in the fall. Each team will play eight home matches along with eight away matches.
In an effort to cut down on travel during the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, the Big 12 coaches and sport administrators agreed on a new format for the 2020 season only. Teams will play eight doubleheaders, playing the same team on consecutive days at the same site. Fourteen of Iowa State’s 16 matches will take place on the respective Friday and Saturday, with ISU’s trip to 2019 Big 12 Co-Champion Texas being a Thursday-Friday doubleheader. This format is intended to be for 2020 only, with the goal to return to the Wednesday-Saturday conference schedule format starting next season.
Iowa State begins the 2020 volleyball season on Friday, Sept. 25 at Kansas State at 6:30 p.m., with the Cyclones and Wildcats playing again the next day at 6:30 p.m. K-State will be one of three Big 12 teams playing in a different facility this season, as the Wildcats will move out of Ahearn Field House to the larger Bramlage Coliseum, where KSU play men’s and women’s basketball.
The Cyclones will open the home schedule on Friday, Oct. 2 at 6:30 p.m. against Texas Tech. Iowa State’s second match against the Red Raiders will be on Saturday, Oct. 3, with the match time to be announced after ISU knows its football home game time against Oklahoma on the same date.
Also moving out of their usual homes is Texas, who will be going from Gregory Gymnasium to the Frank Erwin Center, and TCU, who is leaving the University Recreation Center for Schollmaier Arena. While K-State and Texas’ moves are intended for this season only, TCU’s move to Schollmaier is permanent.
With the Cyclones traveling to Austin on Oct. 8-9 and Fort Worth to close the regular season on Nov. 20-21, ISU will be the only program to visit all three different facilities in 2020. The Cyclones’ other road trip will be to West Virginia on Nov. 6-7.
The highlight of the ISU home schedule comes on Oct. 23-24 with the visit of 2019 Big 12 Co-Champ and 2019 NCAA National Semifinalist Baylor. The Friday match will be at 6:30 p.m., with a 4 p.m. first serve for Oct. 24. The Cyclones follow that with another visit by a 2019 NCAA Championships team, with Oklahoma coming to Ames on Oct. 30-31. The Friday match will again be at 6:30 p.m. and the Saturday match at 4 p.m.
Iowa State’s home finale will be against Kansas on Nov. 13-14, times for those matches are yet to be determined.
Ticket and fan information for the 2020 season has yet to be determined. When available, it will be posted on cyclones.com and on Iowa State Volleyball’s social media channels.
