WBB: Third quarter plagues Cyclones in loss to Oklahoma

The Cyclone women were 10-0 when leading at halftime going into to Saturday’s road game against Oklahoma. That became 10-1 following a third quarter that provided the Sooners with an 11-point swing and an eventual 77-67 win.

The game was neck and neck in the first 20 minutes, largely because when one team got hot, the other tended to follow. If one team was cold, the other didn’t capitalize.

Iowa State held Oklahoma’s leading scorer, Taylor Robertson, to three points in the first half. However, they only got two points out of their own leading scorer in Ashley Joens during the same timeframe.

The Cyclones went into the half with a 37-36 lead. Oklahoma came out firing in the second half and ISU couldn’t keep up.

Joens finished with 21 points, but only controlled three rebounds – a season low. She fouled out with four minutes to play, putting an end to the hope of an Iowa State rally.

The loss is Iowa State’s second straight, dropping the Cyclones to 1-2 in the Big 12.

Iowa State will return to the court on Wednesday night at Hilton Coliseum to take on TCU. The game is scheduled to tip off at 6:30 p.m.
