Anyone in DM ever used one of those companies that will come out to your office and replace your front windshield? Mine has a big nasty crack in it, and I am finally getting sick enough of it that I just want it fixed.

I would love some opinions.

My deductable is $500, so it would not do me any good to go through insurance.

Is it a crack or a rock chip? We've had a couple of rock chips taken care of for free through our insurance using the people that come your work and do the work in the parking lot. Our insurance takes care of them without having to pay any deductible. I can't remember the name of the company that we used though.

Funny Story (about windshields). About 8 years ago I was heading into work (5:30 am) and there are cops all over the place. There is a dump truck company down the street, and someone had shot the windshields out off all there dump trucks, a fleet of 20. They had every auto glass firm in the central Iowa area there fixing them up that morning, so they could go to work. Middle of the summer and their busiest time of the year.

The rumor was that one of the trucks probably picked up a rock and broke someone's windshield and the trucking company told them to go get bent.

It started out as a rock chip, and then last summer, one of the kids thought it would be fun to spray water on the car when it was like 95 out. CRACK! Went through the whole windshield then, so it needs to be totally replaced.

That is why you always get rock chips fixed. You can still see it, but it will help prevent the windshield from craking.

I replace the windshield in my car about once a year. I found that typically, it costs less to just pay for it yourself to get it replaced. The windshield replacement runs about $150 normally whereas if you go through the insurance company, it will cost you your deductible ($250).

If you already knew this....nevermind.

Hey,

Shoot me an email and I can get you a good price. If your deductible is high then maybe we can stay under that. Iowa Glass Auto Glass Center is the best way to go!

I used safelite in ames before they worked out pretty good. I have also had a window replaced at the junk yard earlier this year. And it cost me about $150 less then a window place. So if you have any junk/part yards around and I am sure you do, give them a call it will be alot cheaper then buying new.

People

Getting the cheapest price is NOT the way to go. We are talking about a KEY safety device in your car here. THe windshield is part of the strutural integrity of the roof. Installed incorrectly and you can be killed in an accident during a roll over. Make sure the place is reputable. NGA certified technicians and they follow AGRSS rules. Do a little investigating. It is not all about price and water leaks.

:eek:I think I have replaced 2 windshields on my Personal Cars twice in the 18 years that I have had a license:wideeyed:

Never had to replace my windshield when I was Iowa, however since I moved to Colorado, it has become pretty regular. I spend lots of time during the spring, summer and fall in the mountains on back roads getting to streams to fly-fish. Invariably rocks are kicked up. Last year the weight of the 3 feet of snow on my car caused a tiny chip to grow across my windshield. The summer before the heat caused small chip behind my rear view window to crack down in an inverted "V" down the windshield.
