Anyone know of any good winding roads around the Des Moines area? I'm tired of all the straight roads in central Iowa on my motorcycle.

Sorry, can't help you out in Des Moines. But I do know that North of Dubuque, US 52 in Iowa and US 61 in Wisconsin are quite fun (I know that doesn't help you out much, though).

I hate to say it but I think you'll have to ditch central Iowa to find em. I know of some hilly ones but they still are pretty straight.

May try southern Iowa. Take the Osceola exit and see what's down there.

Try following the "Dragoon trail" north towards Ft. Dodge. Other than that, the roads in Iowa are all pretty damn straight, which happens when there are no pesky hills, water, or other substantial terrain features to get in the way.

What road is the dragoon trail? Where do I pick it up at?

R-22 in Dallas County from Waukee to Booneville. Go straight west on Grand Ave, to DMACC, stay to the left and about 5-6 miles of flat straight road, go north on R-22 at the Waveland Cafe in Booneville. Take R-22 about 7 miles into Waukee-great hills and curves!

From there take Highway 6 (Hickman Road) in Waukee west to R-16 (about 5 miles) and go south through Van Meter and get back on the Booneville Road.

A nice little square hilly curvey ride...(if that makes any sense)...

I like to go north out of Boone up through Stratford and then over through Dolliver State park into Fort Dodge. Nice 100 mile round trip for the evening.

I also plan taking a weekend with my dad this summer and starting in the South East corner of the State and riding the Great Iowa River Road all the way up to the North East corner of the state.

Dad and I have done the Loss Hills and it is a nice ride. There are lots of good roads in Iowa, you just have to drive to some of them. But then again I like 400 - 500 mile days. PM me if you ever want to go riding, I am always looking for someone to go for a ride.

Living in Omaha, I've done the Loess Hills many times. There just isn't much else of any real interest.

This past weekend I decided to take a few days and ride out to The Grand Tetons and Yellowstone. 810 miles the first day. I left Yellowstone via the eastern entrance/exit. Totally awsome ride up and down through a mountain pass. The next day I rode through the Big Horn mountains and finished it off through Spearfish Canyon in the Black Hills. The next day rode around the Badlands. 2302 miles in 4 days. Unfortunately I had to ride back for about 500 miles in about 30-40 mph winds straight out of the south.

Start your trek in Indianola on hwy 69 and head south down to Osceola. Once you hit the northern edge of Osceola head west on 152 (turns into Truro pavement once you cross I-35) follow that all the way up til you reach the end and head west on Puru road. Then follow that into Truro and past East Puru. Once you reach the Clark Tower road head north into Winterset. The road you enter the town of Winterset is named John Wayne Dr, which if you follow it all the way north, it turns into hwy 169 (or head west once you reach Winterset to 169/92) From hwy 169 head north until you're just south of De Soto, and turn to the east on 360th. Follow that past Van Meter and all the way to Booneville and head north into Booneville on Ute Ave and into Waukee. Drive that all the way to the Hwy 6 intersection, go east, and back in Des Moines. Thats the best route with the most hills and curves I can think of......

I rode up to Ames today and took part of the Dragoon trail from Polk City to Madrid near Big Creek. It was no Deal's Gap, but a nice little stretch of road. I'll definitely take it further sometime but I cut east at Madrid today.

As far as central/northern Iowa goes, it's fairly curvy.

Parts of it are somewhat unpaved though. North out of Ames up to Hwy 20 has a nice little stretch of road up near Stratford(?) as well.

It's scenic, though nothing like you would find if we had real elevation changes here.
