Just looking at various "Big 12 Power Rankings" by various sources. We are in about 5th place generally (out of 14 teams) and I think back to what we all were thinking back when this gambling problem surfaced. I have to think anyone who still thought we would make a bowl game back then was dreaming, or just hopeful. Granted, some of our wins have come against teams that weren't as good as we thought they would be. But we also lost a game we would have likely won if not for a contagious virus. Weird season. But at this stage, what a relief to have gotten to where we are!!! Great job players and coaches! Great to be a Cyclone!

I thought we still had a really good shot at making a bowl as the gambling news was leaking out in the spring. After all, I was ready to see Rocco cook by the end of last season anyways and I thought we had good RB depth. Lee definitely hurt us, but I thought the reaction to the news was a bit overblown.

But after the non-con? I didn't think there was any chance we'd be bowling. Thrilled with the turn around.

Re-reading this again, looks like our Bowl Partners can pick whoever they want, but as @ChrisMWilliams and @brentblum said tonight, it seems unlikely to jump a jump with 2 more wins than us. It looks like the Big 12 will have 9 teams in with 6 teams having a better record than ISU, likely 2 more wins if ISU loses to KSU, KU beats Cincy, and WVU beats Baylor. That likely means we're looking at options 7 (confusing flex pick with 2 bowl games in DFW) or option 8 in Shreveport unless Texas makes the CFP. I'd think that the confusing DFW option would rather pick Texas Tech than ISU, but who knows.

Big 12 Bowl Partners
Once the CFP has filled its bowl slots, Big 12 bowl partners will make selections from the remaining Conference teams. Following is the order of selection. A bowl may pick from any available teams with .500 or better records when it reaches its spot in the selection order. After the placement of those teams, slots will be filled from among the pool of remaining teams.
  1. Allstate Sugar/ CFP At-Large
  2. Valero Alamo (San Antonio on 12/28 at 8:15 PM vs PAC 12)
  3. Pop-Tarts (Orlando on 12/28 at 4:45 PM vs ACC)
  4. TaxAct Texas (Houston on 12/27 at 8 PM vs SEC)
  5. AutoZone Liberty (Memphis on 12/29 at 2:30 PM vs SEC)
  6. Guaranteed Rate (Phoenix on 12/26 at 8 PM vs Big Ten)
  7. Lockheed Martin Armed Forces Bowl*/SERVPRO First Responder Bowl*
    1. This is very confusing to me. 2 different bowl game options here.
    2. Armed Forces Bowl is on 12/23 in Fort Worth at 2:30 PM vs AAC/C-USA
    3. SERVPRO First Responder Bowl is in Dallas on 12/26 at 4:30 PM vs AAC/ACC/C-USA
  8. Radiance Technologies Independence Bowl (Shreveport on 12/16 at 8:15 PM vs Pac 12)
* Game is a “flex pick” for seventh selection after CFP.

Current Standings - projecting 9 teams in.
Texas: 10-1
OU: 9-2
OSU: 8-3
KSU: 8-3
WVU: 7-4
KU: 7-4
ISU: 6-5
Tx Tech: 6-5
UCF: 5-6, plays Houston for a bowl game.

It seems unlikely that TCU (5-6) beats OU or BYU (5-6) beats OSU.

Even with weeks to prep, I want no part of a service academy. God bless them and I think navy may actually throw it a little this year (could be wrong and thinking of another academy) but their offenses make games get weird. We need to win our bowl.

Virginia Tech would at least be a new P5 team we never play. UNLV doesn't excite me in any fashion, and SMU is just ok. They are a good team, but I like playing P5 teams, so Virginia Tech out of that group by a landslide.
SMU = Former SWC team and future ACC team, so I'm down with it. :)

The State of Hockey
McMurphy now has us playing a road game at the Liberty Bowl playing Memphis again.

ESPN says Memphis only filled half their stadium for senior day this weekend. There may be a chance that it is majority Cyclones if we have to play them. But yeah, i would rather not play a team in their home stadium.

Having said that, I want to play the opponent we are most likely to beat. G5 or low end P5. Just want to win the game with this young group to carry momentum into next season.
Agree with this 100%.
1) It builds confidence for the team to carry momentum over to next year,
2) NO ONE outside of Cyclone fans cares one lick who you beat, all they see is the record and "did you win your bowl game?"

Let's be candid -- we have trashed a 9 or 10 win Hawkeye team for losing their bowl game to a "middle of the road" Kentucky, Florida, Tennessee, LSU, etc.

Pundits saying "A young ISU team, who went 7-6 last year and is coming off a bowl win where they beat down Arkansas State by 35" sounds a lot better than "ISU was 6-7 last year." No one is impressed with a "good loss" to a solid SEC team.

Definitely agree with all of the above but I'm just mainly thinking selfishly here. Personally I find it a lot more exciting to play a P5 team from a different conference (usually a team ISU has never played before) than Tulsa or Troy or Ball State. Agree it's probably better for the teams confidence and momentum to get a G5 team, but that game will 100% be their super bowl

I get that.

I will say, though, that my kids still like it when we deliver a good old beat down (ie, the BYU game) the best.

We don't get an "Easy victory" much, so if/when we do, I relish it!

Agreed. I'd much rather play a crappy opponent than a good one for a bowl game, this season. It's an exhibition, for one, so there's no additional reward for beating a better opponent. And at this point, finishing out the season with a 8-5 or 7-6 record, and a victory over a crappy bowl opponent, will do more for the team than 7-6 or 6-7 and a loss against a good opponent, considering the expectations of the season and how things started.

I'd much rather look back on a year where we came off of a troubled off-season and a stumble out of the gate, to rebound to a bowl win. That's something that can be sold to recruits, current players, and fans, so I'm interested in whatever path makes that outcome most likely to occur.

I personally only value McMurphy for Bowl Projections and Liberty does seem most likely when you dig into it.

Playing Memphis again would be complete dog **** however. Power 5 team please

Yikes, that's absolutely atrocious competition. I guess we aren't leveling up this year against Clemson or Notre Dame.

So the Big 10 is gonna have like 2 at large teams. Pick them Liberty, not ******* Memphis.
