Wigginton news (until he is back) thread

You stick Jacobson on the free throw line.

He makes the right pass or takes it to the rim one-on-one.

With our shooters and/or Lard ready to fly over somebody for a lob, I think I am going to be quite happy with Iowa playing its cute little zone.

When SDSU went to a zone in the second half, we struggled the first several possessions down the floor, as no one was in the hole at the FT line.

Then we actually ran an offense when Jacobson and THT would swap out position down low / at the FT line as the ball was swung from side to side and we scored pretty much every possession until they quit playing zone.

I remember that. I think there might have been a timeout or an under-16, under-12, or under-8 timeout involved in the transition between outcomes, too.

I doubt a zone is something that is going to much bother a team like ours with so much ball movement and so much interchangeability between players.

Plus, we are always looking to run. If they want to play zone, all the more incentive for us to just turn on the jets once we have the ball, and Shayok, Horton-Tucker, and once we have them, Lard and Wigginton are really determined about scoring on the break and really creative about finishing around the rim once they are rumbling to the basket.

Excellent point on the break, as we do have a few guys where a 2 on 2 is our advantage.

this team, in comparison to some of the Hoiberg teams, is an excellent example of how Tempo (possessions per game) is not an indicator of fast break effectiveness.

this team, in adjusted tempo, plays much slower but it seems like we score more points - or at least are more effective - on the break than some of those teams.

Maybe. Imo the numbers are more of an example of how much more effective this team is executing in the half-court, offensively but also defensively and rebounding. That could propagate down to better fast break opportunities but less possessions, resulting in higher effectiveness. We’d need to know how many points were scored in the half-court vs fast break.

Imo our play thus far suggests a team better able to win in a half-court type of game, and that’s backed by the tempo and efficiency numbers. That’s exciting, because as a program that’s been the missing piece in our deep run ability since LE, and it’s happening without several experienced players and a majority of our size.

I still think you guys win. You’ve looked really good even without the guys you’re missing. THT is a stud and I’m not sure who on Iowa can stop him. Plus that’s a brutal 3 game stretch where we play Wisconsin and at Michigan State first. I’m still not sold on the improved defense so this upcoming stretch will tell us a lot.

The one wild card and potential positive for Iowa is that your freshmen, as good as they are, haven’t played in a hostile road environment yet and you never know how that will affect a player.
If you don't think any of these guys have ever played in a hostile road environment you know nothing about basketball in Chicago.

That's the same Texas Southern team we beat 85-73.

It's also the same Texas Southern who beat Baylor at Baylor.

Wow. Oregon may not even be a tournament team.

They'll be in the tournament. Guarantee it. They have a bunch of talented guys on the team and sometimes they play as a team and sometimes not. They have enough time to figure that part out.

I went to the Iowa Pitt game last night due to free tickets from a Pitt coach and CIMD. Iowa is so slow they will have a tough time keeping up with us. Keep the pace up and it will go better for us. They don't adjust and rotate when they double up the dribbler on a screen so a good pick and roll works well. THT and NWB will be able to blow by defenders. It should be an interesting game.

Hines said on his latest podcast he talked to Wigginton before the game Monday night and he wouldn't rule him out for the Iowa game yet

I'd assume that'd be only limited minutes though. And by limited, I mean really limited, like 10 or so.

THT (like the freshman thing) will also be challenged to not get caught up in it and force things. Been great the last few games but occasionally still pulls out the fade away.

I'd imagine Iowa will get out to a fast start and we'll see what happens if things settle down.

Imo Wigginton isn't necessarily needed at Iowa for a win if the current group plays their normal game and I hope he doesn't just to prove it and to keep Hokdom at bay about 'Super Bowl'.

Edit: many of them will already be chirping about Lard coming back just for the Iowa game even though he'll have played 12/3.

They're doing a special deal if you buy both Wisconsin and Iowa State tickets. Pretty sad when those two are your rivals
That is how I got tickets for ISU game. Letting others use the Wiscy tixkets.
