I haven't had a chance to read much this week but I think Loney might be the man. NFL coach who can develop O-lineman. The RB's will want to come because of great blocking. I know he is not the flashiest but would be loyal and work very hard. And it is HIS dream job. Go ahead and make fun of me now.

It would all depend what kind of recruiting contacts that his asst. coaches had. Kinda like we thought of McD when he was hired. Loney isnt that much different than Calhoun at Air Force, but he has handled a D-1 program the last 2 years and won. Loney was head at Drake.

Loney has been an avearge Asst coach at best! I know he loves ISU but we need someone better than that. We need a guy who can come here and motivate our guys and keep them pumped up to stay here and I dont think Loney would do that :wideeyed:

The biggest problem with coaching searches is that fans want a wow guy and a good coach - those two just aren't going to go together for a school like Iowa State. Chizik was a wow guy, Loney is a good coach. Pollard has already picked his wow guy in Chizik, now will he pick a good coach?

I guess the real question would be WHY?

His last 3 stops in the Pros have been less than impressive. Vikings, Cardinals and now the Rams. He finished 6-5 at Drake and one of those wins was on a Hail Mary. Plus, you talk of loyalty. But then why did he leave us to go to the Gophers and then leave us again so we had to hire Coach Marty Fine who wasn't so fine. I really want a HC at a college program. Bill Cubit or Butch Jones would be better than Loney.

Is there any way we could lure TCU's Patterson ? And is there any weight to the Pat Hill rumors?

I have no problem with anyone if: they have good character, they care about the school, and they win :). Asking too much....hopefully not.

I really hope Chizik wasn't hired because he was a wow guy. We need a Coach. Not a cheerleader, promoter or motivator, but a Coach. If JP is looking for anything other than a good Coach, I'd be pissed off.

Iowa State: Sources tell FootballScoop that St. Louis Rams offensive line coach Steve Loney would like to interview at Iowa State.

The most successful years offensively under Mac were with Loney. He also got Mason started at Minnesota. His NFL ties would be very attractive to recruits...especially linemen...He also beat a scholarship 1-AA with a non-scholarship Drake team...

I wouldn't be against Loney because he would give 200%.

That said, I would still take Patterson, Hill, Graham and Holtz ahead of him. Calhoun could actually be an incredible fit for us(does more with lesser recruits)...

The Vikings led the league in rushing his 1st year, their All-Pro center was on IR the next 2 years. Plus there was the "Wizzanator" incident with Ontario Smith. That had a direct impact on the running game.
IMO Loney is ISU's best chance for a turn around. I thought the same thing 2 years ago. I hope Pollard doesn't make the same mistake again.

Loney was 8-24 at Morehead State as a head coach..then 6-5 at Drake. What has he done to prove he can be a head coach?

I think Loney left for a OC job, came back and then went to the pros. I remember him being quoted as saying he wanted to be the head coach at ISU but knew he did not have a lot of glitz. He was trying to get experience. With a good OC and DC he could get some flashy recruiters and boom, off to the races.....maybe

More than anyone else that Pollard can find who is willing to come to ISU.

More than Chizik had/has done.

Plus that was early on in his career Pre-NFL

Wow. With a record like that, he's more than qualified to be the next head coach at Auburn University!!!
