Why did the Big 12 let Microsoft butcher their marketing with AI slop?

In isolation, does this small project that will be forgotten really matter at all?

No.

Has this ruined my entire summer?

Yes.

From a macro perspective, AI is a net negative right now. (Many reasons, but that's a separate thread.) I feel the same about sports leagues being completely consumed by gambling, private equity buying teams or leagues (LIV), etc. All of these issues are obvs about $$$$$$. I get it.

Should we accept it though?

If a person becomes licensed with a school to sell products with logos, etc. they have to adhere to strict brand standards, some which can seem absolutely absurd, in order to maintain a certain level of quality and prevent reputational harm.

The gold standard for ISU is Jack Trice's story, something that shouldn't be mocked or belittled or diminished in any way, right? If an ISU licensee tried to sell a poster of Jack Trice Stadium that honors someone who died playing for the school, would it be acceptable to have it named

JACE IIIBCIGMANIA

along with a deformed I STATE logo at midfield?

Yes, some companies use AI to generate a chunk of a project, but have an actual human involved to fix or add things. If a business is asking me for attention and money while serving up slop, why should I care if they don't care?

It's like Matt Campbell said this week - ISU's best players gave up money to come back to Ames. Why? Because they care. Because ISU football/AD is full of excellent leaders who change people's lives. Because ISU fans are fantastic. Because it means something. They care, so I care.

Look at this Kansas image. How is KU's brand elevated by an image that shows deformed and dead jayhawks? Plus the video board probably needs to be censored.

I don’t mind KU looking like a bunch of mutant bird babies…but I hate KU.

More than anything it’s just lazy, you could photoshop up the mutant tumors in like 10 minutes…but I guess then they couldn’t say it came from their inferior lagging ai software.

I was playing with AI for an Independence Day image and it does some really weird stuff. Random symbols, foreign languages (I'm assuming, could be just random jumbles of letters).

the mutant fingers thing is wild because human artists struggle with fingers and toes too. They are incredibly complex proportions and everybody subconsciously knows if they are “off”. Even a lot of the greatest comic book artists will come up with all sorts of ways to get around drawing fingers and toes just to save time.

These little tumors of JHawks, stuff like that, you wouldn’t see in any serious art class or even in a child’s art class (unless it was some surrealist intentionally trying to create gross stuff). You’d see people struggling with lots of other issues, but not accidental bursting tumors of nothingness.

Isn’t this just supposed to be fun?

Guess I also don’t see what’s to be upset about
We all know AI does weird ****, that’s part of the fun

Yeah I don't begrudge anyone for having fun with AI. I think it's different when businesses do it tho, especially considering the ethical concerns behind stolen work, etc.

Umm ok? Sorry this happened to you?

Means a lot. Thank you.

Could've hired you. The Big 12 Conference proudly presents (HFCS stadium images) inspired by Microsoft Copilot AI. Easy. Many monies coming your way.

It's an interesting tension. The Big 12 is in last place of the P4 and needs all the money they can get for now. I've posted many times over the years about how the Big 12 needs to innovate and be different. How can the Big 12 do that without becoming a joke, thus diminishing their power in the marketplace? Ex: The Big 12 Cheetos Conference.

The Pop Tarts bowl game is successfully walking that line right now.

IMO these specific inconsequential AI images are just a hint of the bigger issues that the Big 12 will have to tackle, but then again, I'm all for blowing it up and starting over.

Ah yes, the meme that every artist knows

Holy effing **** guy, I assure you it's not that deep. Nobody is degrading Jack's honor by posting a friggin AI image that has some jumbled up text, FFS.

AI is a powerful tool that can be used to become better at your job, or it can be a silly toy to make goofy images, and both are completely valid ways to use it.

I, for one, am very pro-AI.

When something can teach itself and learn exponentially faster than a human I’m not sure “tool” is an adequate description.

We don’t call a modern computer a calculator. We don’t call a motorcycle a bicycle. We don’t call an encyclopedia a brochure.

Thread makes me want to watch Terminator this morning. AI Arnold would have killed Sarah Connors.

CoPilot is a piece of ****

But as long as the checks don't bounce

It's definitely not ideal or powerful for this kind of image generation compared to many other options and what we'll see in just a few months, but the bar right now is if it will happily go full Nazi within a few minutes of discussion so it far surpasses the work of other massive companies in some respects.
